At the Octoroon Balls for string quartet is based on traditional Creole music that surrounded the composer while growing up in New Orleans. The octoroon balls were held for white Creole men to choose their Octoroon (one-eighth Black ancestry, with one Black great-grandparent) mistresses. Divided into seven movements, the piece includes fiddle reels, hoe downs, jug stomps, and marching bands – even a somber tone poem. Total performance time is about 45 minutes.Set of Parts. The term ‘freygish’ is typically found in klezmer music but derives from a much older cantorial mode, also known under several other titles including the Ahava Rabbah mode, the Mode of Supplication, and Altered Phrygian mode. It is used for the setting of ‘Ahava Rabbah’, or ‘abounding love’, the Ashkenazi prayer and blessing sung during the synagogue morning services. When performed, either in synagogue or in a klezmer setting, the mode can be developed into a variety of short phrases and melodic forms. Jeremy Arden has taken this beautiful irregular scale and filtered its melodic forms through my own musical sensibilities to create a dialogue between Jewish musical traditions and the western musical canon, expressed here through the rigorous crucible of the string quartet.

An achievable masterwork in the Viennese Classical style, Dr. Liebergen's edition presents the option of featuring a vocal quartet on selected passages. One Latin phrase and welcome repetition minimize woodshedding and allow musicianship to be the focus in concert or adjudication.

Lachenmann' s central essays such as Klangtypen der Neuen Musik (Types of Sound in New Music), Die gefahrdete Kommunikation (Endangered Communication), Zum Problem des musikalisch Schonen heute (The Problem of Beauty in Music Today), and his essays on Mahler, Schoenberg and Nono are among the most important testimonies of autonomous musical thought in our time. In addition to Lachenmann's major essays, this volume of writings also contains all of the composer's work introductions as well. The reprint 2004 is essentially the result of an intensive and critical reading of the previous text by Lachenmann himself. The text was generally only slightly altered, with passages rewritten and the language occasionally lightened. Only the analysis of the Second String Quartet Dance of the Blessed Spirits, which was very topical back in 1996, was newly conceived and substantially changed. The editor's observations, work catalogue and discography have been revised and updated.Dieses Buch kann weder einfach nur benutzt oder gelesen werden. Dieses Buch muss wahrlich studiert werden. Moon River was written especially for Audrey Hepburn to sing and originally featured on the soundtrack for the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The song has been covered by many other artists and has remained well-known for many years. This love song to a river also makes a wonderful instrumental work, especially so on stringed instruments. Nico Dezaire’s sensitive arrangement for string quartet gives each member of the ensemble the opportunity to play the wistful melody.

40 years lie between the composer's multiple award-winning String Quartet No. 2 and this new contribution to the genre. Martin Christoph Redel was motivated by the world's current political situation: by the violation of human rights, by war, torture, violence and expulsion. He includes a soprano part and responds to texts of the Tunisia-born poetess Najet Adouani who had to flee her home country several times herself because she had advocated human rights and freedom of speech there. In my throat nests the pain of all those to whom I lend a voice, is one of her statements that was set to music.

Having previously been granted the diploma of the Bologna Academy in December 2011, Maxwell Davies wrote his Concerto Accademico as both an expression of gratitude to the Regia Academia Filarmonico di Bologna and also in part 'a presentation of academic qualification, to justify this singular honour'. The work is scored for string quartet and string orchestra and is based on a plainsong chant, heard at the outset, associated with the Holy Spirit descending upon the disciples at Pentecost, and their subsequent speaking in tongues.

A wonderful work from the rich repertoire for string quartet with solo clarinet, Divertimento is full of folk, jazz and neoclassical influences. The piece was sketched on a train journey in 1926 and inspiration from this can be heard in the outer movements. It was later rescored for clarinet and string orchestra, forming Seiber's Concertino.

â??Almost half a century after 'B for sonata', here is another musical evocation of my intriguing trip to Bali. Yannis Xenakis and Toru Takemitsu were there, among others, and we were walking around in the dark one evening when a Topeng appeared to us, in full action: Balinese musical theatre with one actor successively playing several legendary characters by means of mask changes carried out in extreme agitation behind a curtain, accompanied by a raging gamelan. The memory of these little dramas has naturally lost much of its violence when it is evoked today in my 'Quartet VIII'. So we shall hear it here as if in a dream...â? Betsy Jolas.

The Catalan composer and vihuela player Luis de Milan (1500-1561) ranks among the most important composers of the Spanish Renaissance. His collection El Maestro from 1536 was the first publication of vihuela music in music history (the vihuela is a predecessor of the guitar). The six pavans contained therein are typical examples of the stately processional dance. According to the etymological derivation of'pavo' (Spanish/Latin: 'peacock'), this characteristic bird call which can be performed freely and naturalistically by the saxophoneplayer can sometimes be heard in this 'peacock's dance'. World premiere: 15.2.2017 Ballhaus Berlin, with Domiki Wollenweber (cor anglais) and the saxophone quartet CLAIR OBSCUR. Also published by Schott: a version for alto saxophone (cor anglais) and organ (ED 21260).

Comm issioned by Bromsgrove Concerts with financial assistance from Arts Council England 1st perf: Smith Quartet, Artrix, Bromsgrove, 27 February 2009 Favoured by English composers from Purcell to Vaughan Williams and Britten, the ground-bass form receives a contemporary makeover in Morgan Hayes's Dances on a Ground. Artfully four-square, a cello ostinato stays stubbornly true to its original thoughts. Meanwhile, above it a capricious ensemble of two violins and viola swaggers its way through flights of melody and jumpy pizzicati to an ecstatic conclusion. Commissioned by Bromsgrove Concerts with funding provided by Arts Council England, Dances on a Ground was first performed by the innovative Smith Quartet at the Artrix, Bromsgrove, on 27 February 2009.
