The suites take centre stage in the cello literature. They are timeless and beautiful and accompany cellists from their student years up through their professional career at the highest level. Appropriately and not surprisingly there are countless editions of the suites. But the composer?s autograph has not come down to us. It is lost and this circumstance has always been a major challenge for editors. The four surviving handwritten sources and the original first edition of 1824 differ in many details, the articulation andphrasing being particularly ambiguous. At Bärenreiter, having published the New Bach Edition and presently publishing the New Bach Edition-Revised, we feel particularly committed to the cello suites. We have approached the editorial problems from several angles and have published editions that meet the needs of students and professional performers alike. This new edition, based on volume 4 of the New Bach Edition ? Revised (NBArev), now completes Bärenreiter?s collection of the cello suite editions. Andrew Talle has fundamentally reassessed the relations between the surviving sources and has drawn conclusions regarding their evaluation and consequently the genesis of the suites. His evaluations are augmented with thorough discussions of the instrument for which the suites were conceived and the interpretative practices in Bach's day. The musical text of the edition is based on these findings. It approaches the composer's original intentions as far as the sources will permit. Details regarding articulation were deemed as being viable and were added to the musical text if they appeared in the majority of the sources. ?This edition does not present a perfect reconstruction of the lost autograph; no editor could claim to do so. They stem from Bach ’s extremely productive time in Cöthen which ended in 1721. Unfortunately the only sources that have come down to us are copyist parts from Leipzig. These originally formed the basis for the critical complete edition volume which was published in 1967 as part of the “New Bach Edition”. At that time Bärenreiter also issued separate scores and parts which however were prepared with additional articulation and performance suggestions. Bärenreiter’s new edition of Bach’s great four suites nowpresents the Urtext as found in the “New Bach Edition” i. e. without emendations and performance suggestions. Les Suites del Plata s'inspirent de la suite de danses, forme instrumentale très en vogue pendant la période baroque, qui était une série de danses populaires de différentes parties de l'Europe, toutes liées par un élément mélodique-rythmique et précédées d'un prélude. Les Suites del Plata rassemblent des pièces musicales de la région connue sous le nom de 'La Cuenca del Plata', un vaste bassin autour du Rio de la Plata et ses affluents, dans lequel une riche et abondante variété de danses, de formes et de styles de musique populaire a émergé et existe encore aujourd'hui. Dans la Suite n°4, une chanson 'littorale' (de la música litoraleña), 'Olor a domingo' (Odeur du dimanche), fonctionne comme un prélude et décrit l'atmosphère d'un dimanche après-midi calme et chaleureux. 'Urgente' (Urgent) est un tango qui nous fait découvrir le vertige et la folie d'une grande ville. 'Nublado' (Nuageux) est une milonga campagnarde par un après-midi gris dans l'immensité de la Pampa. 'San Cristobal' est une valse créole qui nous emmène dans l'un des quartiers les plus traditionnels de Buenos Aires. The series of diverse emotions which I subsequently experienced made me see Music in a completely new way. I began learning them slowly, inevitably adapting the text. As I discovered their educational value, the knowledge of harmonic structures, forms and stylistic features gradually evolved within me. Over 20 years I have studied various editions and listened to the meaning which these suites have had for many famous performers. Ipleasantly discovered the commendable work of other clarinettists who in turn have dedicated themselves to approaching this composer with the bass clarinet. The objective of this version isn't to impose conditions on how to play the suites. We carried out unique research into the coherence of the text, based on the manuscripts of Anna Magdalena Bach and Johann Peter Kellner. The choice to remove any type of articulation and agogic was made in order to encourage the development of personal interpretation, which obviously requires a fundamental investigation of the sources. This edition comes with 4 versions of the suite. The reason behind producing four versions (which are in different keys and tones) is because every musician has their own tastes and tendencies. Personally, I prefer the bass clef transposed to B flat because I find the bass clef to be the most appropriate for the spirit of the low instrument. This authentic arrangement of ten movements from the Water Music suites dates from Handel’s lifetime but is published here for the first time edited by the distinguished Handel scholar Donald Burrows. Its simple light scoring makes it excellently suited to use by schools and small instrumental groups. It can be performed in many different combinations from the original two violins bassoon and continuo to string quartet or wind-based group.

From early in the 17th century until the form engaged the interest of Johann Sebastian Bach various notable German composers - including Rosenmüller Fischer Fasch and Telemann - had contributed to the development of the orchestral suite or 'Ouverture' which name betrays its French theatrical origins. From Bach himself only four such suites have come down to us due to the diligence of C.F.Penzel who was a student at the Thomasschule from 1751 and who made copies of Bach's MSS he found there. Thus neither the dates nor the order of composition of the suites can be established with any certainty. As to the present suite in B minor recent criticism suggests that Bach'sidiomatic flute writing in this popular suite would even in 1737 or later have been considered fashionably up-to-date even in Paris. It has also been suggested that the suite could have been written expressly for Pierre-Gabriel Buffardin principal flautist of the Dresden Court Orchestra.

A Centenary Tribute to Holst's First Suite in Eb. Par DE HAAN JACOB. En 1909, Gustav Holst composa une oeuvre audacieuse et novatrice, la Première Suite en Mib Majeur, op. 28 n°1 (First Suite in Eb major, Op. 28, No. 1), une suite exclusivement écrite pour instruments à vent. À l’occasion du centenaire de cette pièce, devenue un classique du répertoire pour Orchestre d’Harmonie, Jacob de Haan a composé la Memorial Suite en Ut mineur. Cette composition en quatre mouvements fait référence aux qualités stylistiques de l’oeuvre de Holst, tout en s’appuyant sur le langage sonore et l’écriture caractéristiques du style de Jacob de Haan. Le résultat est original. Comme Gustav Holst, Jacob de Haan a choisi d’ouvrir sasuite avec une chaconne, une forme de variation contrapuntique (à l’origine une danse espagnole à trois temps) dans laquelle un thème revient de façon récurrente accompagné à chaque fois par un nouveau contre-chant. Ce thème ostinato est utilisé de différentes manières tout au long des quatre mouvements, assurant ainsi l’unité de l’oeuvre. Le second mouvement est un scherzo. Par sa progression et son caractère, il s’apparente à l’ intermezzo central de la suite de Holst. Le troisième mouvement, Song Without Words (Chanson sans paroles), porte le même titre que le second mouvement de la Deuxième Suite en Fa, op. 28 n° 2 (Second Suite in F, Op. 28, No. 1) composée par Holst en 1911. À mi-chemin de ce mouvement très expressif apparaît un solo de saxophone alto.
