Béla Bartók's series of piano pieces For Children, based on folk melodies, was written around the end of the first decade of the 20th century. The pieces were published shortly afterwards by the Hungarian publisher Károly Rozsnyai. That first publication was in four volumes, the first two containing a total of 42 pieces based on Hungarian folk tunes, the third and fourth containing 43 pieces based on Slovakian folk tunes. In 1943, whilst in the United States, Bartók prepared a revised version of the collection for the publishers Boosey and Hawkes. The revisions were minimal: two Hungarian and four Slovakian songs were eliminated, there were a few minor alterations incorporating new ideas, some of the pieces previously written with accidentals had key signatures added, a few pieces were rewritten with changed meters - some fingerings were added or changed. The composer prepared the revised 1943 edition by using copies of the first edition on which he marked minor changes - where the changes were more extensive, fresh manuscript was written and a new version engraved. However, much of the engraving of the first edition was preserved in the 1943 edition. Publication took place in 1946, after the composer's death - it is not known if he saw final proofs prior to printing. The revised edition was published in two volumes, which now have been published together as one volume for the first time. / Piano

Par BARTOK BELA. Béla Bartók’s “For Children” is one of the best known pedagogical works for piano teachers of the twentieth century, second only perhaps to the same composer’s “Mikrokosmos”. It was based firmly on the huge number of folk songs he collected, recorded and studied with his colleague Zoltán Kodály. At the time, Bartók was offering something very new to piano teachers and their students. Siegfried Steinkogler became acquainted with “For Children” at the beginning of his guitar studies and, from them, learnt a great deal about melody and harmonisation.
He has chosen 38 of the original 79 pieces to offer in arrangements for the guitar. They are presented with helpful fingerings, technical solutions and aids to familiarize the younger students with common notations. For beginners, ten of the pieces are played exclusively in the first position before a gently increasing level of difficulty helps the player broaden their skills. In these arrangements, Bartók’s ingenious teaching pieces will be as invaluable to guitarists as they have been to your pianists for over one hundred years./ Répertoire / 2 Guitares

Bartók’s 'Romanian Christmas Songs' are based on folk melodies that originated in a pagan celebration of the winter solstice and which he felt gave “the impression of a fiery war-like type of song ratherthan a pious and religious one”. Nevertheless he chose 20 melodies from this collection of “colinde” and published them under the title of “Christmas Songs”.In the first edition of 1918 theywere conceived for children’s hands and so were published “without octaves”; but in his revised edition of 1936 which we present here Bartók added an appendix featuring alternative “concertversions” confirming that these miniatures are also perfectly suited for public performance. This Urtext edition is based on that of the Bartók Complete Edition and for the first time integrates these concertvariants directly into the musical text. We also offer the original melodies and translations of the texts of these colinde to provide an insight into the origins of this rather different kind of Christmas music.

Béla Bartók composed his 44 Violin Duos in 1931, at the urging of the German violin pedagogue Erich Doflein. With two exceptions, all the pieces are based on original folk music themes, most of which the composer himself collected in the course of his numerous collecting trips to the Carpathian Basin and in Algeria. Although conceived as parts of a pedagogically motivated set, these little pieces are highly effective in concert performance as well. The transcription follows Bartóks original faithfully. The publication includes fingerings added by the editor. / 2 Violoncelles
