Return To Avalon is scored for two flutes one doubling Piccolo the other doubling Alto Flute.In the mid-thirteenth century over 200 000 Cathars were murdered in the South of France 'Avalon' by forces of darkness and ignorance. The Cathars were European Buddhists who believed in loving each other that we are all equal in the eyes of God non-revenge vegetarianism and that women could be priests. They also believed in reincarnation.In answer to threats and bullying many of them chose to be burnt alive rather than be forced to follow teachings they believed to be untrue.People say that the Cathars never came back. People saythat they died in vain. But I believe that they are wrong I believe that the Cathars did come back to create a Church of light outside the constricts of religion but through the arts through music poetry and prose.'Return to Avalon' is the story of two great Cathar flute players who rise from the ashes of the Montsegur massacre to return and baptize the world into the truth of the eternal through the beauty of sound and honesty of expression. I imagined these 'Sons of the light ' playing this piece and letting its message of friendship and brotherhood echo out over the mountains.'Return to Avalon' begins with 'The Last Song' a 13th century Cathar melody echoed on alto flute then explores an idea I first used in my 1993 flute concerto the idea of orchestrated digital delay.The second movement 'Human flame' on piccolo and alto is also based on a medieval theme but takes it further and further out until finally it burns up into a huge fireball.In the third movement 'Sons of the light return to Avalon' the two flutes reappear Phoenix-like from the ashes leading and learning from each other. Eventually the flutes become inseparable as they interweave together at speed leading us to a higher truth that we are all brothers and sisters equally loved by God.Phenomenal flautist Samuel

'I asked my friend, the poet Einar Askestad, if he could write a poem for me about love between father and son, brothers and God.I felt that these forms of love are seldom sung about. The poem moved me greatly and I have tried to put music to these words which is simple yet full of beauty. 'My Hazara People is a setting of two texts the title work by Shukria Rezaei a young Afghan poet and Lalai lalai babe bacha shikar rafta (Baby's father went hunting) a traditional Hazari lullaby. Although their characters are entirely different the two poems share much in common. The importance of family and home and beyond that connection with country and heritage are at the centre of both. Shukria's poem is a direct expression of love and despair for Afghanistan with intimate moments of terror - a cup falling from her mother's hand during an explosion her aunt fainting - set against the suffering of Hazaras across the world. In the contextof this devastating contemporary experience Lalai lalai is nostalgic and poignant - open gates straw latches a sleeping child. The tune of the lullaby is heard in two highly contrasted versions. For Shukria's words it is dark and restrained a repeating rhythm illustrating the Hazara's seemingly never-ending pain and for Lalai lalai it is bright and joyful with sounds of the hunt a crackling fire and a gentle chorus as the child is rocked. A further thread runs through the music - a quotation of my favourite traditional Afghan Herati lullaby Allah Hu (God is great) reflecting Shukria's reference to her people's religious heritage. I have adapted the text at the end of Lalai Lalai to bring it into the Shukria's world a reminder that each innocent person caught up in conflict is a mother  a brother a sister a father a daughter .... kids like us. The work exists in two versions for voice and piano and voice and strings. The former was premiered by Charlotte Tetley (mezzo-soprano) and Graeme Bailey (piano) on 20 June 2018 at Somerville College Oxford as part of a panel discussion on women refugees. The work was commissioned by the Orchestra of St. Johns. I am indebted to Shukria for allowing to set her poem and to Cayenna Ponchione for inviting me to be part of this

POD-Richard Allain's The Beloved for SATB choir and Organ. This work was commissioned by Merton College Oxford as part of the Merton Choirbook a collection of music being assembled to celebrate Merton College's 750th anniversary in 2014. The Beloved was first performed on the 18th January 2015 in Merton College Chapel by the choir of Merton College conducted by Benjamin Nicholas. This work is a setting of text by Thomas Allain: Above himThe dove will linger in flight As the Light is bathed in water The water bathed in light.And a voice will tearthe heavens apartHe alone hears now within his heart:The Father Well-pleased Whispering his delight. Richard Allain's The Beloved (Novello) another Merton College commission and also with words by his brother on the theme of Christ's baptism gives ample opportunity to demonstrate the virtues of their new organ in a toccata-like interlude illustrating God's voice tearing 'the heavens apart'. After this climax the piece subsides to a pianissimo heterophonic declamation of God's pleasure in his Son. A powerful piece if one has both ·the vocal and instrumental resources to do it justice.  Organists Review December 2017

Par BAY WILLIAM. This is a collection of 155 solos for trumpet, cornet, or flugelhorn. Ninety-one were recorded on various trumpets, 37 were recorded on cornet and 27 on flugelhorn. One hundred and fourteen are original compositions and the remaining 41 are arrangements on favorite hymns and sacred songs. A warm-up study is also included. This compilation comprises 6 books; Trumpet Chants; Trumpet Tone Poems, Trumpet Ballads and Waltzes, Trumpet Partitas, Soliloquies for Flugelhorn, Trumpet or Cornet, and Hymns for Unaccompanied Trumpet. Many of the pieces have been revised and new ones have been added. Each book was recorded with a different instrument although Trumpet Ballads and Waltzes and Trumpet Partitas were both recorded with a cornet. However, a different mouthpiece was used for each of those two recordings, thus giving each a slightly different sound. Both the instrument and the mouthpiece used are noted on the title page of each section. Most of the selections are aimed at developing tone and lyricism on the trumpet. However, Trumpet Partitas definitely addresses technical issues. There is a wealth of music in this collection, and it will add much to trumpet practice and performance repertoire.
