For Soprano and Chamber Ensemble (Clarinet in A Viola Cello and Double Bass).This extended version of a knot of time was commissioned by Faith Wilson. First performance on 10th OCtober at the CBSO Centre Birmingham by Sarah Leonard (Soprano) and the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group conducted by Richard Baker.''a knot of time' began its life in 1992 as a piece for the Composer's Ensemble for Clarinet Viola Celloand Bass with Mezzo Soprano. It was originally the title of only one setting using the poem 'Cada cancion' by Lorca. The tessitura of the vocal line always seemed generally too low for the music and there were also problems withthe clarinet writing so I changed the mezzo-soprano to soprano. I also felt that I should add more settings for the piece to have more of a life and so was thrilled when Faith Wilson asked me for some music to celebrate her 60thbirthday in 2008. I decided immediately to add two more Lorca settings to this first setting. I wrote 'El grito' and 'El silencio' quite quickly in June 2008. I added 'Aire de Nocturno' in October of the same year but stilldidn't feel that it was complete and so added a brief and rather explosive setting to close in April 2010; 'El puñal en el corazon'. The whole piece will be premiered in October 2010 with the soprano Sarah Leonard and membersof the BCMG eighteen years after the initial response to Lorca's texts.'     - Simon Holt

The third song, Colloque sentimental, was written in 2003 for Alison Smart and Katharine Durran’s New French Song project. It was as a result of having written one short song to words by Verlaine that I subsequently decided to set two further poems to make a group of three. All three were also set by Debussy: L’ombre des arbres and Chevaux de bois appear in Ariettes Oubliées, while Colloque sentimental belongs to Debussy’s second set of Fêtes Galantes. The poems I have grouped together are linked by the idea of three different landscapes. In the first, Verlaine precedes the words of his own sad, pale landscape with words from Cyrano de Bergerac about a nightingale who fears himself about to fall into a river and drown. In the second poem the landscape has been occupied by a fairground where men, women and children watch as the hobby-horses go round and round before night falls and the church tolls a passing-bell. The third poem takes us into an old park where two ghosts recall their past. The one wonders if the other remembers the happy days of their past lives, but the other doesn’t want to remember, barely acknowledging the closeness they once shared, seeing only that ‘hope has fled, defeated, towards the dark sky.’ I am very grateful to Roger Nichols and Dominique Mols for their advice with the setting of the French texts and with the translations. Per Nørgård's Tidsrum / Spaces Of Time for Orchestra with obligate Piano dating from 1991. Programme Note Spaces of time is a 20-minute long one-movement orchestral piece “with piano” signifying that the piano not only as in my other orchestra works is part of the ensemble but also in a major passage attracts almost all attention. This passage is only one of the ´spaces of time´- spaces which give the work its title and represent individual musical perspectives.  Relations of tempo and scale characterize such a space (besides the mentioned“piano-concerto” or other intrumental features) and in this way associate with say a small room - with close-ups of the musical objects - or perhaps to an infinitely great space - a cosmic one where all is far away and vibrating.  One motive marked mainly by ascending stepwise movement unifies the spaces but the very varied scales may let the outines of the motive change between say 1/4-tone steps 1/2-tone steps diatonic and other scale steps up to such ambient steps that each one comprises almost a third of the total orchestral range. Very often 2 scales are woven together in a way that lets the “hidden tone” inside a major step in one of the scaels become a part of the other scale. By dynamic means one scale may be highlighted as a “figure” the other one as a “ground” in one passage - and vice versa. In this way a 12-tone chromatic scale may as well contain a Japanese 5-tone scale as a European 7-tone scale. In the final “space” the tones literally take leave of the listeners - by streaming down - as water sucked down into the ground by gravity - into the bass octaves and - into silence.  Spaces of time was comissioned by “Suntory Hall” in 1990-91 (artistic director Toro Takemitsu) in October 1991 with Aki Takahashi (piano)

The Twenty-Eight Times is a Vocal piece composed by British composer and conductor James Whitbourn. The Twenty-Eight Times was commissioned by the United WestminsterSchools and Grey Coat Hospital Foundation to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy and performed in Westminster Abbey on 25 October 2013 by the choir of Queen Anne’s school Caversham. This ancient Hebrew text from Ecclesiastes (Qoheleth) was a favourite of President Kennedy and formed partof the Eulogy delivered at his funeral service on 25 November 1963. He was assassinated on 22 November1963.

Rev. Gary Davis was a musical giant. His ideas spanned a wide range of techniques and styles. His repertoire featured blues, rags, show instrumentals and gospel songs. He played with his thumb and index finger to pick out complex melodies, rhythmic licks and lightning fast single-string runs. In this book, seven of Rev. Davis's blues are presented. These arrangements have been performed and recorded by a host of great artists including Bob Dylan, Taj Mahal, Hot Tuna, David Bromberg, John Renbourn, Bert Jansch and many others. LESSON ONE: Our first lesson highlights two of Rev. Davis's most popular blues arrangements. Hesitation Blues is played in the key of C. Baby, Let Me Follow You Down is played in the key of G. LESSON TWO: The key of C was a favorite for Rev. Davis. In this lesson we explore the party tune Sally Where'd You Get Your Liquor From (made popular by Hot Tuna). Rev. Davis used to joke that he could play Candyman so many different ways that he would be able to play it nonstop for at least 8 hours without repeating himself! We look at two versions of this very popular folk blues with the regular Candyman followed by the Two-Step Candyman. LESSON THREE: 'Raggin' the blues' was a great part of Rev. Davis's repertoire. His Walkin' Dog Blues is a tour de force in a blues in C. All fourteen verses are transcribed here, and we study how this arrangement develops. Buck Rag is a fascinating rag played in the key of C. LESSON ONE: A blues in 12/8 with Leroy Carr's Midnight Hour Blues. Blood Red Moon follows played in a dropped D tuning. The lesson ends with Blind Lemon Jefferson's One Kind Favor. LESSON TWO: Sunday Street is an original Dave Van Ronk song and is an excellent example of Dave's arranging skills. Four choruses are taught demonstrating how this tune can develop. Bessie Smith's classic blues You've Been A Good Old Wagon is taught in the key of E. LESSON THREE: Dave's arrangement of St. Louis Tickle was the first great challenge for fingerpickers interested in classic ragtime. This four sectioned rag is played in the keys of C and F.
