For Chamber Ensemble.Commissioned by the Hebrides Ensemble and first performed o...(+)
For Chamber Ensemble.Commissioned by the Hebrides Ensemble and first performed on their Scottish tour in March 2010.In Seven Pierrot Miniatures I took the Commedia dell’arte character Pierrot as my primary sourceof inspiration. Other more tenuous links to Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire also served as a starting point in forming the general shape of the work. The piece is cast in seven short movements whereas the Schoenberg comprises threesets of seven movements. Although there is no part for voice I have taken seven poems by Albert Giraud (none of them set in Pierrot Lunaire) as points of departure:1. The Clouds2. Decor3. Absinthe4.Suicide5. The Church6. Sunset7. The HarpEach movement takes its impetus from the corresponding poem but in the piece as a whole I wanted to explore the extreme contrasts of the multi-faceted character ofPierrot in a musical setting. There is an almost mirror-like quality to the form of the piece and a sense of ending where it has begun: movements 1 3 5 and 7 are closely linked both in terms of their musical material and asense of melancholy dream-like quality and longing. Movements 2 and 6 are also strongly connected with allusions to the more mischievous violent side of Pierrot. Movement 4 serves as a sort-of pivotal point within the work juxtaposing a surreal shimmering calm with brutal outbursts. There is never any direct repetition yet there is a strong sense of material returning and mutating as the workunfolds.InstrumentationFlute doubling piccoloClarinet in Bb doubling Bass Clarinet in BbViolin doubling ViolaCelloPiano

Ringo: With A Little Help is the first in-depth biography of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr who kept the beat for an entire generation and who remains a rock icon over fifty years since the Beatles took the world by storm. With A Little Help traces the entire arc of Ringo's remarkable life and career from his sickly childhood to his life as The World's Most Famous drummer to his triumphs addictions and emotional battles following the breakup of the Beatles as he comes to terms with his legacy. Born in 1940 as Richard Starkey in the Dingle one of Liverpool's most gritty rough-and-tumble neighborhoods he rose from a hardscrabblechildhood marked by serious illnesses long hospital stays and little schooling to emerge against all odds as a locally renowned drummer. Taking the stage name Ringo Starr his big break with the Beatles rocketed him to the pinnacle of worldwide acclaim in a remarkably short time. He was the last member of the Beatles to join the group but also the most vulnerable and his post-Beatles career was marked by chart-topping successes a jet-setting life of excess and alcohol abuse and ultimately his rebirth as one of rock's revered elder statesman.

(SZYMANOWSKI KAROL) Piano, Voix [Partition] PWM (Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne)
Par SZYMANOWSKI KAROL. (VII) The Polish idiom appeared in Szymanowskis music in ...(+)
Par SZYMANOWSKI KAROL. (VII) The Polish idiom appeared in Szymanowskis music in 1920, foreshadowing the beginning of a new period of creativity, later called nationalistic. Before this idiom was realised and such compositions typical of the Polish style as the ballet Harnasie, the Mazurkas, Stabat Mater, Fourth Symphony and Second Violin Concerto had been written, the change in musical thinking and the first experiments in the new language took place in songs. Symptoms of the new style manifested themselves fully in Slopiewnie, Op. 46 bis, composed in the summer of 1921 and published by Universal Edition. In these bizarre songs to bizarre words by Tuwim Szymanowski attempted to crystallize and generalize artistically some primaeval Polish, racial as he described them elements in music. The inspiring factor was undoubtedly the text by Julian Tuwim, abounding in new-coined words and imbued with its own music. It indicated the direction that artistic creativity was to take, and made the full corellation of the verbal and musical layers possible in, as Mieczyslaw Tomaszewski has stated, all the planse of co-operation phonic, structural, expressional and semantic. Based on A. Neuer Commentary to Complete Edition Volume C11 (VIII) Szymanowski did not yield to the temptation of easy over-stilization. Streching out to the deepest ethnic layers of his native musical culture, he made an attempt to mould and suitably fashion a Polish style of musical utterance. This tendency is apparent in the Three Lullabies, Op. 48, to words by Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz, composed in 1922 and published by Universal Edition in 1926. In the Lullabies we can find the confirmation of the fact that utterly new atmosphere which, according to the composer, Slopiewnie had introduced into his music, was not a once-for-all phenomemon. The elements of the new musical language, analised in connection with the earlier cycle, may here be regarded as assimilated. These are modalities in vocal melodies (Lullaby I) and cadences (Lullabies I and III), a bourdon effect with a tritone (Lullaby II). However these sometimes sligh and apparently unimportant details recur constatnly, an so acquire the nature of a definite compositional technique establishing a style based in an increasing degree on nationalistic elements. Based on Adam Neuer Commentary to Complete Edition Volume C11 (IX) The Childrens Rhymes, Op. 49, a cycle of twenty short songs by Kazimiera Illakowicz, composed in 1922-23, were a completely new creative experience for Szymanowski. He composed the Rhymes with his 11-year-old niece in mind. She was the daughter of Stanislawa Korwin-Szymanowska, who performed these songs for the first time in Warsaw on 25 February 1924. / Date parution : 2021-12-09/ Recueil / Chant et Piano

Par MARTINU BOHUSLAV. Unusual instrumentations were by no means the exception in the chamber music works of Bohuslav Martinu, most notably the works he wrote in Paris in the 1920s and 1930s being characterised by his experimentation with sound and form. It is from this period that four short serenades also originate (1932), each with a different instrumentation. The serenades were issued by the Prague publishing house Melantrich in 1949.
Their premiere took place two years previously on 16 October 1947 and was performed by members of the Prague Symphony Orchestra (FOK). Although the study score of the Serenades Nos. 1 and 3 was published while the composer was still alive, he was in fact not involved in preparing this edition: indeed, the performance material also appeared in print without his participation in 1954. It was therefore decided to use the autograph score as the principal source for this edition./ Répertoire / Hautbois, Clarinette, 4 Violons et Violoncelle

In 1948 he composed a very short suite for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain - entitled simply To Youth. Seven years later he took To Youth and made some fairly major revisions, including a complete new movement, and the Little Suite for Orchestra was born. The Little Suite for Orchestra follows a very similar pattern to the later suites for brass band, starting with a bold, strident Prelude, which strangely ends quietly before a lovely, lilting, Dance composed in 3/8 time. Finally a rollicking and militaristic March brings the suite to a conclusion. I wrote Christmas Light for a choir and glockenspiel to celebrate poet Betty McKellarâ??s 90th birthday. I love the colour and imagery in Bettyâ??s work and the honesty and clarity of her writing.I first discovered her work in the 1990s and set her poem Cramasie Threid for soprano and cello.I then took the poem Sangsters as the starting point for a concerto for orchestra which was premiered by the Swedish Chamber Orchestra in 2002. I have always enjoyed collaborating with non-professional and community groups which I find stimulating and inspiring. These are musicians for whom music is an absolute pleasure â?? who give time without payment in the midst of busy lives often withdemanding jobs and family commitments. They do this because they love music and the companionship and buzz of working together. The enthusiasm always communicates to the audience and some of the most memorable performances of my music have been in churches schools and community halls. This short piece is a tribute to Bettyâ??s creativity warmth and optimism.

The Battle on the Heath On 24 January 1597, the ?Tielenheide? - a stretch of moorland near the Belgian village of Tielen, south of Turnhout-was the scene of a great battle. Prince Maurice of Nassau, commander of the Dutch army, crushingly defeated Count Varax, a Burgundian general of the Spanish army. In military circles, the Battle of Turnhout caused quite a stir: a Spanish army of five thousand men was initially held up for hours through daring short moves by fifteen cavalrymen and a few hundred foot-soldiers -and subsequently, this Spanish army was overpowered by barely a thousand cavalrymen, without the help of the infantrymen. New weaponry proved its value that day. The Dutch cavalrymen were not armed with spears, as previously, but with long, carbine-like pistols . Before the pikemen of the Spanish army could stick their fearsome, six-metre-long spears into the ground to protect themselves against the onrushing horses, they were shot to pieces or knocked down. During the battle, the state troops seized a number of flags, which would embellish the Ridderzaal (Knights? Hall) in The Hague for years. In a contemporary Dutch military magazine, the victory at the ?Tielenheide? has been described as ? the heaviest blow ever delivered by the Dutch cavalry?. The location where the battle took place is no langer moorland: it is now a pine forest planted more than a century age, to meet the demand for wood in the old coalmines of Limburg . Part of the forest is now the military territory of the Third Paratroop Batallion, and part is now the De Waal nature reserve: it is not accessible to the public. In Tielen there is still a street called the Tielenheide, near the former moorland.

Score-The suggestion that I write my autobiography was made at a time when anyone who did not write one risked being called eccentric. It became and still is a major sport among the oldsters. Some of the contemporary books are goodreading indeed. One of the best of them is the result of an enormous research job as is brought out in the introduction to the work. Imagine spending long hours and traveling many miles to find out about oneself: I am sure Iwould be one of the first to be utterly bored by the subject. It was not so easy however to dismiss the whole idea as my friends presented it.The only answer I could think of with any degree of enthusiasm was this one written purely for whatever pleasure it could give. My own part of the pleasure is mostly in utilizing the musical language of the concert band with its apparently inexhaustible colors and its fabulous vitality. The form(if the term has any right being here) is seven short pictures each about two minutes long of my own personal seven ages. The two-minute idea may be the result of the loudspeakers spread all over the hotel in Arizona where thepiece was composed. There was no getting out of ear-shot of those two-minute gems - in the dining rooms around the swimming pools by the putting green everywhere-but I honestly do not believe any of them crept into what I waswriting. I do not believe I paid much more than passing attention to them.Part Two:IV. 1916: Mo. to N.Y.V. 1919: The Merrill MiracleVI. 1926: A Parisian in ParisVII. 1935: What Was theQuestion? The three of my seven ages in Part One took us to the legal end of my youth. Gathering up my unspectacular belongings including my entire fortune of less than two hundred dollars I swooped down on New Yorkfor no more reason than that it was New York and had a street in it called Broadway. The music borrows two or three rhythms from the era but the only note-for-note quote is what the bugler at Camp Funston played every morning

Folksongs from Japanese Immigrant Workers in Hawai'i-Voices From The Canefields ...(+)
Folksongs from Japanese Immigrant Workers in Hawai'i-Voices From The Canefields is a collection of folk songs from Japanese immigrant workers in Hawai'i. Folk songs are short stories from the souls of common people. Some like Mexican corridos or Scottish ballads reworked in the Appalachias are stories of tragic or heroic episodes. Others like the African American blues reach from a difficult present back into slavery and forward into a troubled future. Japanese workers in Hawaii's plantations created their own versions in form more akin to their traditional tanka or haiku poetry. These holehole bushi describe the experiences of one particular group caught in the global movements of capital empire and labor during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In Voices From The Canefields author Franklin Odo situates over two hundred of these songs in translation in a hitherto largely unexplored historical context. Japanese laborers quickly comprised the majority of Hawaiian sugar plantation workers after their large-scale importation as contract workers in 1885. Their folk songs provide good examples of the intersection between local work/life and the global connection which the workers clearly perceived after arriving. While many are songs of lamentation others reflect a rapid adaptation to a new society in which other ethnic groups were arranged in untidy hierarchical order - the origins of a unique multicultural social order dominated by an oligarchy of white planters. Odo also recognizes the influence of the immigrants' rapidly modernizing homeland societies through his exploration of the 'cultural baggage' brought by immigrants and some of their dangerous notions of cultural superiority. Japanese immigrants were thus simultaneously the targets of intense racial and class vitriol even as they took comfort in the expanding Japanese empire. Engagingly written and drawing on a multitude of sources including family histories newspapers oral histories the expressed

Chorale (2001 02) for orchestra is a kind of musical meditation on the chorale Es ist genug from Bach?s cantata O Ewigkeit du Donnerwort itself a harmonisation of J R Ahle?s 1662 hymn. Nick Kimberley?s preface outlines the context of the Bach original and refers to Alban Berg?s use of the chorale in his Violin Concerto almost 300 years later. In contrast to both of these works Lindberg?s Chorale has no extra-musical agenda. The composer explains that he took the harmonic structure of the chorale and embedded it in his own harmonies. ?I make an analogy with the rise and fall of the tide. When the tide is in the sea-bed is invisible; but when the tidegoes out you see the rock formation on the sea-bed.?Tribute is a short show-piece for full orchestra composed in 2004 as a gift to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Esa-Pekka Salonen?s debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
