Pavel Haas was one of Leoš Janácek’s most gifted students. His String Quartet No. 2 “From the Monkey Mountains†is considered to be one of the first high points of his oeuvre. In this work, Haas combined elements of Janácek’s compositional technique with jazz, particularly in the fourth movement’s instrumentation for string quartet and percussion ad libitum. This version was premiered in Brno in 1926; later, the work was revised for string quartet only. For this edition Ondrej Pivoda has reconstructed the original version, bringing to light passages that were never published until now. This is the first critical edition of the work. It is based on all relevant sources, taking sketches of the final version of the score and contemporary performance material into account. It includes an extensive Foreword (Cz/Eng/Ger) as well as a Critical Commentary (Eng).

Manfred Trojahn’s amply dimensioned piano quartet in four movements with a duration of approx. 40 minutes was composed and developed in several stages. The inner movements, a Vivace characterised by lombard rhythms and vitality and a dream-like adagio were written in the Mozart Year 2005. By 2008 the outer movements were completed. The opening Adagio “Zerbrochenes Lied†is an imposing lamentation of the dead whereas the Finale, a profound, moving “Wanderliedâ€, was dedicated to Trojahn’s friend and composer Wilhelm Killmayer on the occasion of his 80th birthday. In this way Trojahn’s work stands in the tradition of Mozart’s two piano quartets, but adds a biographical element. This is a large, musically demanding but rewarding work for ambitious musicians.

This three movement piano trio from Giselher Klebe’s late period of creativity originates from his estate. The composition’s appeal lies in the clear, restrained diction whilst at the same time a high intensity of expression is achieved. Two diverse slow outer movements with eruptive injections frame a lively middle movement. This work which has a duration of 20 minutes undoubtedly represents an impressive document of a musical style which we perceive today as the classical modern.

For this scholarly-critical edition, the editor has consulted no less than 16 sources, many more than were ever used for any other edition of the Requiem; some of these sources were never evaluated before and one source, a hand-written vocal score, particularly relevant to the evaluation of the Liber scriptus, was newly discovered. As such, this edition offers new philological and editorial decisions regarding phrasing, articulation and dynamics and succeeds in presenting practical suggestions to solve musical problems and those concerning the interpretation of this famous work. This edition comprises a concise Critical Commentary in the score as well as a detailed one on the Barenreiter website. The most important editions published in the 19th century are compared with regard to musicological questions in the work. The genesis of some misunderstandings included in the 1913 and 1964 Ricordi editions is traced. The first version of the Liber scriptus for chorus is included in the appendix while the later version for mezzosoprano solo is to be found in the main part of the edition.
