Brahms? popular 16 ?Waltzes? opus 39 composed in 1866 for four hands were transcribed by Brahms one year later for two hands. At the request of his publisher Brahms also wrote an easier version of the work for solo piano. Brahms himself described the first version as suitable for 'reasonable hands' that is for proficient players and the easier version as 'perhaps for prettier hands' that is for domestic music-making. He initially described the latter version to his publisher as a 'children?s edition'. The catchy and musically easily accessible pieces are among the composer?s most popular works and are particularly suitable for piano students and lovers of the Romanticrepertoire.Both versions of the ?Waltzes? op. 39 (BA 9602 BA 9603) are available in separate editions and form an important contribution to Bärenreiter?s series of Brahms?s works in scholarly-critical Urtext editions. His style incorporates a characteristic mix of classical, modern, cinematic, and jazz elements. In addition, he claims he ''loves splashing about in tonality,'' which makes his works accessible to the wider public. Owing to his humor and imagination, he finds an easy path to children, as demonstrated by the popularity of his piano works specifically intended for beginners. for piano four-hands-The six pieces in Gabriel Fauré's Dolly suite were inspired by the young daughter of the composer's friend Emma Bardac. The girl was born in 1892 and called “Dolly” on account of hersmall delicate figure. These pieces were composed mainly for Dolly's birthday or the New Year and reflect the world as experienced by the growing child from a lullaby to a temperamental dance. The suite was notmeant to be taken too seriously as shown by the subtle allusions to his own music and that of others. Despite their simple basic structure these pieces which soon became popular contain numerous harmonic and rhythmic subtletiestypical of the French composer – “children’s music” that is also well suited to adults.

English-This opera is the final section of the entertainment for young people called Lets Make an Opera. The first section of this is in the form of a play and illustrates the preparation and rehearsal of an opera.Professionals or very gifted amateurs are needed to play the grown-up parts and also the part of Juliet (provided of course that she can look convincingly youthful). It is essential that real children should play the children’s parts. The accompaniment is for solo string quartet piano-duet (four hands on one piano) and percussion (one player can manage). The string parts are not very easy. The songs Nos. I IX XIV and XVII are to besung by the whole audience under the direction of the conductor. They must of course be rehearsed beforehand. Allowance is made for such rehearsal in Part One of Let`s Make an Opera.

In 1945 Bela Bartok described 'Mikrokosmos' as a cycle of 153 pieces for piano written for 'didactic' purposes, seeing them as a series of pieces in many different styles, representing a small world, or as the 'world of the little ones, the children'. Stylistically Mikrokosmos reflects the influence of folk music on Bartók's life and the rhythms and harmonies employed create music that is as modern today as when the cycle was written.
