ââ¬ÅTo this day, Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments, despite being a violinist himself. His Three Pieces for Flute and Oboe, or two Flutes is an exquisite addition to the repertoire. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire, Bozza won prizes for Violin, conducting and composition, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes, whilst remaining a prominent composer. Bozza's Three Pieces are exciting duets containing much musical variation and contrast. As music educationalist, Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza's compositions, ââ¬Âââ¬Åhis works reveal melodic fluency, elegance of structure and a consistently sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.ââ¬Âââ¬Åââ¬Â.

From the composer of My Family and Other Animals for clarinet, here is a new collection of engaging and beautifully imagined oboe pieces by Edmund Jolliffe. Each one is not only a picturesque or playful study, but also a reflection of the anthology's title, addressing aspects of technique and interpretation through shapely melodies crafted around an aspiring phrase or phrases in the instrument's upper register. For oboists of between grades three and five standard, these pieces offer eight unique opportunities for thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding playing.

Performed by Elaine Douvas, oboe Accompaniment: Erik Nielsen, piano This wonderful album for the beginning to early intermediate oboe player includes thirteen pieces ranging from Boccherini to Grieg to Richard Strauss to William Walton. Says James Roe of The Double Reed: “With the poise of a great virtuoso, [Ms. Douvas] approaches these 'easy' pieces as she would a solo line in a great symphony...the richness of her tone, the variety in her articulation, and the beauty and clarity of her line all represent the very best example for students as they develop their concept of playing. And it's all pretty inspiring for us professional oboists as well.†Ms. Douvas's extensive performance notes “are a delight, and will be inspiring to students and an important aid to teachers.†Includes a complete printed solo part annotated with performance suggestions and access to online recordings with complete versions (with soloist) followed by piano accompaniments to each piece, minus the soloist.

An oboe concerto from the romantic era? Embarassingly, due to the small amount of solo literature for the instrument from this period, this question often asked of oboists, must be answerded with a reference to the few small concert pieces and sets of variations available. The A minor Concerto by Hugo Schuncke, who was a musician at the Court of Stuttgart, fills a need. The work consists of three movements: a virtuoso Allegro, a pastorale Andante and a rhythmic, exciting Bolero in rondo form. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4057600.
