In her four-movement Sonata Bacewicz obviously refers to the Baroque music , the virtuoso trend of the music for strings of that epoch, as proven by the kind of narrative as well as Bach-like ostinatos and figurations, textural devices such as lyrical double stops or bourdons with open strings, a based-on-fifths-plan of repetitions in the second movement and the like. (...) All this makes the Sonata an original commentary on a composition on which it feeds and to which it owes a great deal (i.e. a cycle of the Partitas and Sonatas for solo violin by J. S. Bach), depriving the music of Arcadian illusions while preserving its musicianly dash instead, an indisputable violin quality of sound and energy, which is exclusively the energy of the material, without any extramusical references. [M. G siorowska, op. cit.].

In 1941, I was invited by Viktor Vaszy to take on a choice double role, as a teacher of composition at the Cluj Conservatory as well as chorus master at the Cluj National Theatre. For me, this meant both an official state appointment and a substantial increase in my income. At the time I was over 35 years old and still without a permanent post. I took up my new duties at the end of the summer. My wife and I felt very much at home in Cluj but the most important for me was that along with my artistic obligations I found time to compose. Unfortunately we do not know why Farkas wrote in 1992 a new version of the Three Burlesques for clarinet quintet and for whom it was intended. The first movement Allegro, arc shaped, is more a succession of rhythmic patterns than melodies, with hectic ostinatos and staccato chords. In the middle of the movement, a short figure, like a second theme, brings a bit of calm and gentleness. The second movement, an expressive Moderato comodo and the final Allegro are shorter and also contrast with staccato chords.

The castle is beautiful but draughty. The king is visited by double glazing salesmen who are offering two free cloaks along with their special window units. The king gladly gives them the work, not realising the effect the magic cloaks would have upon him and subsequently upon his family and the rest of his subjects. This all-year-round play with seven songs, optional improvised music, percussion and dance, has a strong moral - that attractive things are not always what they seem, and it is the simple things which bring joy and peace of mind. In 1965 Robert Munster, the Mozart scholar, determined that in a manuscript copy containing 13 settings of the Tantum ergo by Johann Zach (1669-1773), the Director of Music at the Mainz Cathedral, the final Tantum ergo in B flat major was for the most part identical to KV 142. Zach's work is 43 measures long instead of the 63 measures of KV 142, although the Amen coda is missing. For some unknown reason, Mozart made a few changes to Zach's composition and through the addition of the coda extended the work by twenty measures. At the end of 1938, Jelly Roll Morton (1890-1941) returned to New York from his years in Washington, D.C. Recent publicity had made a comeback seem possible, and he hoped to recapture the prominent place in the jazz world that he had held in the 1920s. Still well known, though mainly as a New Orleans music pioneer, he understood that in order to be taken seriously as a contemporary artist, he needed to form a big band like those of his competition, such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, and Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. In the 1920s Morton's recordings and tours featured a ten-piece band following the first-generation big-band format. But in the late 1930s, larger groups were popular, so Morton assembled a conventional '30s band consisting of four saxophones, six brass, and four rhythm. The band was to open at the Golden Gate Ballroom in Harlem on April 17th, 1939, but on opening night Morton collapsed before going onstage. During his recuperation from the asthma and heart problems that dogged him, the band broke up, never to reassemble. Only six items written for that band's instrumentation are known to exist: Morton's arrangements of his own compositions -- Finger Breaker, GanJam, Good Old New York, Mister Joe, and Stop and Go -- and an arrangement, Mamies' Blues, by another artist. -- James Dapogny (Editor)
As an editor, Dapogny shows his customary sound musical scholarship and deep knowledge of Morton's style....The publishers are to be congratulated for bringing this fascinating work into the public domain, which throws a totally new light on 'Mister Jelly Lord.' Who knows what he would have achieved had he lived beyond his alleged 51 years? --Martin Litton, for JUST JAZZ (Feb 2011)

Giuseppe Verdi's Te Deum for double choir and large orchestra is the most frequently performed work of his Quattro pezzi sacri; composed in 1895/96, the Te Deum was his next to last work. Verdi came to terms intensively and in a very personal manner with the text of the Ambrosian hymn of praise. In a compact formal structure a broad range of styles unfolds, from the monodic beginning in Gregorian chant via large dramatic effects to the soft, doubtful dying away of the conclusion. The work is now published for the first time in a critical edition. Also available in the series Choir & organ. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2719400.

Easy music for string groups. Playstrings provides an enjoyable and varied repertoire for young string orchestras, carefully structured in two levels. The 'Easy' level does not normally exceed Grade 2 in difficulty with most parts playable in first position, while the 'Moderately Easy' level includes some parts of around Grade 3 standard. At easy level, alternative parts are provided so that the absence of viola or a double bass does not prevent the piece from being performed. Available in score or sets of instrumental parts. There are over 30 titles covering a wide range of styles, including classical pieces, folk tunes and Christmas collections. Playstrings is an ideal introduction to orchestral playing for young string players. Set of 19 parts contains: 4 x Violin 1, 4 x Violin 2, 4 x Violin 3, 2 x Viola, 3 x Cello, 2 x Double Bass/Cello 2.

It was through piano and chamber music that Schubert wanted to pave the way for himself toward 'the great symphony' after 1820. One of these works is the Sonata for piano duet D 812 in C major which has become known as 'Grand Duo' but is rarely performed. This sonata is now presented in a large-scale, virtually symphonic chamber music version. For flute, oboe, clarinet in B-flat, Bassoon, violin, viola, cello and double bass.
