This wonderful hymn for Eucharist was crafted with an eye toward the specific needs of the Communion processional. Both the tempo marking and strict rhythm move the piece along with stately grace, while the memorable refrain makes it possible to process and sing without the aid of a hymnal. The text consists almost entirely of images inviting contemplation of the mystery of the Holy Eucharist. While orchestral and choral elaboration is available, the composition can also be sung unison, with the assembly on the refrain and a cantor singing the verses.

Commissioned by the French Government and Musica Strasbourg. As the title suggests, Trois rivières is divided into three separate sections. The first part introduces all the instrumental colours used in the piece. The rhythmic aspect is here nearly eliminated, giving room for the timbral scales, colours, resonances, attacks and textures to come to the fore. The instruments come from all members of the percussion family, but unpitched instruments are given a primary role. The second part adds a rhythmic aspect to the nuances of colour and texture, as an ostinato is developed in markedly varying directions. The last part is an epilogue, recalling components of the two preceding parts. Here, earlier aspects of the material are reorganised and placed in different relationships to each other. The voices of the percussionists act together as an extension of the instruments, being used to create either rhythmically free textures or strictly notated rhythms. They are treated instrumentally, combining to create rhythms and timbres. The poem 'La nuit de lune sur le fleuve' (Moonlit night on the river) by the Chinese poet Li Po (701-762) constitutes the material for the voices, which are amplified and further enhanced throughout.

A warm and easy holiday arrangement of Still, Still, Still and The First Noel that will grace your holiday concert stage as well as broaden your students' listening and technical abilities. Both tunes are presented on their own and then combined to conclude this lyrical arrangement. Rhythmically it is quite easy, which will enable your young players to focus on achieving a good balance between melody and harmony. Correlates with Strictly Strings Book 1, Page 32.

An Evening in the Village was composed in 1908 as no. 5 of the Ten Easy Piano Pieces. It has become one of Bartók's favorite works, which the composer himself was fond of playing at recitals. As he explained in an American interview, it was ''an original composition that is ... with themes of my own invention but ... the themes are in the style of the Hungarian-Transylvanian folk tunes. There are two themes. The first one is a parlando-rubato-rhythm and the second one is more in a dance-like rhythm. The second one is more or less the imitation of a peasant flute playing.'' Bartók also orchestrated the piece in 1931 as no. 1 of Hungarian Sketches. In 2015 we are launching aseries entitled Bartók Transcriptions for Music Students to mark the 70th anniversary of the composer s death. This involves reissuing our tried publications, and publishing some further, new transcriptions that fulfill in every respect the strict aesthetic demands of the earlier ones. We trust these publications will allow us to introduce still more music students to the realm of one of the great geniuses of 20th-century music.

This piece strictly obeys to the two-parts structure of the Sonata form of the early XVIIth Century All formal elements, like ritornelli, are in place, only the substance of harmony, melody and rhythm have taken liberty: fluid, and with a reference to Viennese pointillism.

Un sogno a tre for flute, viola and harp was written in 1990 for a trio of young instrumentalists and first performed in the USA. In the enigmatic words of the composer: the piece has no beginning, no middle and no end ... simply three musicians telling each other something and dreaming a little ... sound is arising and that is enough .... The three parts could be said to interact -- the harp creating a foundation, and the flute and viola forming a relief -- yet they never really meet, nor do they coalesce within the overall texture. Pitch and rhythm are strictly organized, but any attempt at dramatic development has been consciously avoided. The result, according to the composer, is a relief like mass that moves and sometimes stays still, the density of the events changing within and between each section. Despite the seemingly amorphous nature of Un sogno a tre, the structural unity of the piece is never in doubt.

The title of this piece refers both to the often hectic activity of the holiday season and the perpetual motion rhythms (played in eighth notes) that appear throughout the arrangement. Familiar carols are presented, accompanied by the perpetual motion which is passed between different sections of the orchestra. You'd better slow down-you don't want to miss this one!

Spirited dance figures, catchy melodies in canon, and a majestic chorale will make you want to say, Shiver me timbers! This clever composition by Matt Turner plays to the students love of pirates and sea shanties. This is a great piece to solidify student's understanding of compound meter.Perform this piece with exuberance! The first part of this piece is composed of various dance figures—sometimes in canon—and dynamics should be strictly followed to ensure that the melody can be heard . The descant (violin I) in mm . 25–36 should be played quietly so that the melody in the second violin and viola parts can be heard . Use much of the bow—think lush and full—in the chorale section beginning in m . 93 . Articulations throughout are particularly important to create a dance-like feel . Enjoy as you set sail on your voyage!
