Light, Line, Shadow is a response to Edward Hopper's iconic painting Road and Trees, a painting donated to the Philadelphia Museum of Art by Daniel Dietrich II, and the first Hopper painting acquired by the museum. My piece is in three contrasting movements, each referring to and inspired by an aspect of Hopper's painting. The first movement, Landscape in Motion, refers to the dynamic movement of the landscape when traveling in a car and looking at the landscape passing by in the window. Hopper loved to take road trips, experiencing America by car, and in one of his initial sketches for Road and Trees, there was a car in the painting. The first movement tries to capture that moving landscape as experienced in a car in motion. The second movement, Brush Strokes, focuses on the darker forest in the painting, as the trees become denser and the technique of brush strokes creates deep layers. There is a spiritual aspect to Hopper's paintings, a kind of isolation and emptied out space, and the third movement, Open Road, dwells on that aspect of the painting before reprising material from the dynamic first movement.- Pierre Jalbert.

Judith Weir 'S Day Break Shadows Flee For Solo Piano. This 10 Minute Work Was Commissioned By Bbc Radio 3. It Was First Performed By Benjamin Grosvenor On 1St September 2014, As Part Of The Proms Chamber Music Series At Cadogan Hall. ' Day Break Shadows Flee , Written For Benjamin Grosvenor, Is A Two-Part Invention, A Piano Solo Composition In Which The Two Hands Work In Close Co-Ordination But Independently. My Intention Was Generally To Avoid Using Thick Chords (Although Octaves And Other Clear Sonorities Are Included) While Allowing Both The Right And Left-Hand Lines To Be Free, Mobile And Expressive. The Treble And Bass Sectors Of The Keyboard Are Clearly Contrasted AndOften Widely Separated. In Atmosphere And Expression The Music Is Another Kind Of Two-Part Invention, Contrasting Bright, Upwards-Arching Phrases (Heard At The Opening And Evoking The Arrival Of Light At The Beginning Of The Day) With Veiled, Mysterious Scurryings, Suggesting The Stranger, More Nervous Life Lived At Night And In The Early Morning. One of my favourite pieces of music as a child - and I still love it - was Schubert's Trout Quintet. It was partly the wonderful music, of course, so light-hearted and joyful on the surface, yet with twists and turns and murky depths of feeling too. But I also liked the picture of a trout on the album sleeve - such beautiful creatures! Last year, while resident at the Villa Concordia in Bamberg, as I took daily walks along the Regnitz river, I observed the trout as they calmly hovered and swayed in the shallows... But if they felt my shadow they were gone in a split second! If you ever get a chance to look closely at brown trout you see that they are covered in myriad brown/red spots of varied sizes; camouflage I suppose. Now those patterns seem to be mixing in my mind with the shifting colours of the spectral arpeggios that flow through this little piece. It's a watery piece, with rippling waves, shimmering surfaces and textural veils around the melodies which flow through it. But it also takes inspiration (and it's title) from a Pablo Neruda poem: the third stanza of Every Day You Play includes the line The sky is a net crammed with shadowy fish. There's no singer, but I imagine an invisible or imaginary voice somewhere behind (or beyond) the music, and so the score includes a melodic setting of the text. Even though this is not performed by a voice, the melody is always played by the ensemble - especially high register cello - making the piece something like the inverse of a song without words. Cats’ Night Out follows the adventures of a cat as it makes its big escape to explore the magical mysteries that await our feline friend in the darkness of the great outdoors. The opening line foreshadows the upcoming movements of our cat as it experiences a night outside. The first movement, On the Prowl, musically represents the cat as it roams around the neighborhood looking for adventure. The second movement Mouse Hunt, melodiously depicts a cat as it hunts down its favorite prey the mouse. The surprise ending represents the mouse making his great escape. This is a truly enjoyable selection for students and audiences alike. This programmatic work is an excellent choice for your next concert.
