On 13 December 1769 Leopold Mozart and his son Wolfgang set out on their first tour of Italy. It was not until 28 March 1771 that they finally returned to Salzburg. The trip brought the young composer two commissions for opere serie. In March 1770 he was commissioned to write Mitridate, K.87 (74a), for the 1770-71 Carneval season at the Regio Ducal Teatro in Milan. Mozart started work on the opera in Bologna on 29 September 1770, and the premiere duly took place on the Feast of St. Stephen (26 December) in 1770. The second, Lucio Silla (K. 135), again commissioned for the 1771-72 Carneval season in Milan, doubtless resulted from the success of Mitridate. News of the commission reached the Mozarts in March 1771 in Verona, where they had stopped on their return to Salzburg. (At roughly the same time Wolfgang received an invitation from Vienna to supply a serenata teatrale for the wedding of Archduke Ferdinand, the third son of Maria Theresia, scheduled to take place in Milan in October 1771. This invitation ultimately resulted in Ascanio in Alba, K. 111.)

The libretto of what is likely Handel's shortest opera - and apart from Mozart'sLucio Sillathe most important musical setting of the text - is based on Plutarch's biography of Roman consul and dictator Lucius Cornelius Sulla. He is historically known for his reign of terror dominated by cruelty and violence, his excessive lifestyle as well as for his unexpected abdication followed by a withdrawal into private life. This surprising, voluntary relinquishment of power allowed Handel to adhere to the customary happy end (lieto fine) of the baroque opera.

Die Mailander Sinfonien, KV 155-160 schrieb Mozart wahrend seiner dritten Italien-Reise, Oktober 1772 bis Marz 1773, die er zusammen mit seinem Vater unternahm. Im Mittelpunkt der Reise stand die erste Auffuhrung der Oper Lucio Silla in Mailand. Am 28. Oktober schrieb Leopold Mozart in einem Brief aus Bozen ... Der Wolfg. befindet sich auch wohl; er schreibt eben fur die lange Weile ein Quatro ... und am 6. Februar teilt er aus Mailand mit ... der Wolfgang schreibt ein Quartetto .... Lange Zeit wurden die erwahnten Quatros als Streichquartette angesehen. Erst in der Auflage des Kochel-Verzeichnisses von 1965 wurden drei der sechs Stucke als Divertimenti klassifiziert und zwar aufgrund der von Mozart eigenhandig vermerkten Instrumentenverzeichnung Violini / Viole / Violoncello / Basso bzw. Violini / Viole / Basso. Eine Ausgabe als Orchesterquartette ist von daher, auch wegen der musikalischen Faktur der Stucke, gerechtfertigt. Die Werke stehen in der Tradition Samartinis; sie sind eine Weiterentwicklung der Salzburger Sinfonien, KV 136-138.
