Inspiration for the Three Motets op. 39 was a visit to the romanesque church of Trinita dei Monti. On 20 Dec 1830 Mendelssohn wrote to his parents: The French nuns sing there, and it is wonderfully lovely. ... Now, one should know one more thing: that one is not allowed to see the singers. Therefore I have come to an unusual decision: I will compose something for their voices, which I rememer exactly.... Score available separately - see item CA.4070300.

The Easter concerto Surrexit pastor bonus, for large forces, is based on a Latin responsory for Easter. The work is extant only in handwritten form, and nothing is known regarding the date of composition, although the polychoral design, with two ad libitum tutti choirs (Capellchore) could indicate a temporal proximity to the Psalms of David 1619. On the other hand, the freer treatment of the instruments in particular suggests the Symphoniae sacrae and especially - given the work's large instrumentation - the third part, dated 1650. Score available separately - see item CA.2046900.

The material for Jyrki Linjama's Allerheiligentag cycle is a Finnish folk chorale for All Saints' Day (no. 146 in the Finnish Hymn Book). The first work in the cycle is a string trio (2007), the second a piece for orchestra (2009), and the fourth and fifth are solo works for viola da gamba (2018) and Sonata for violin solo (2019). The composer tells: The choice of topic and material was originally influenced by the place where the string trio would be premiered – the old church on the island of Seili (Själö) in the Turku archipelago. The bleak history of the mental hospital on the island invited images of suffering and death. I got so attached to the fine, bleak melody that this series of works began to emerge. Lasting 17 minutes, the sonata for solo violin has three movements, all of them embracing the folk choral material and Béla Bartók’s influence in different ways. It was premiered by Kaija Saarikettu at the Kaustinen Chamber Music Festival in 2020.

Even though I was and remain a proponent of absolute music, the things that we see and experience inevitably colour and energise our thought processes. The grand old man of Finnish Modernism Paavo Heininen (b. 1938) turned his impressions of Boston into violin sonatas op. 134 (2016). All the three sonatas - Boston Sonata, Boston Variations and Boston Ballade - were premiered in one concert in Helsinki celebrating the composer's 80th birthday in May 2018 by Kaija Saarikettu (violin) and Juhani Lagerspetz (piano).
