Berlioz based his sparkling overture Le Carnaval Romain on themesfrom his opera Benvenuto Cellini. The opera had been performed a fewtimes in Paris, a number of years before, with little success. The overturehowever, quickly became very popular and is still today a great a crowdpleaser. The energetic vitality of the work - with an Italian touch- is certainly present in this skilfully written transcription by TohruTakahashi.

Commissione d by the Sacramento Symphony to be a contemporary American-sounding alternative to Britten’s guide to the instruments, BILLY AND THE CARNIVAL uses jazzrock-infused symphonic excitement to tell the story of a young boy who discovers musicians coming to his park to play a concert. Within the course of the story, every instrument is introduced by name followed by a characteristic solo. The companion coloring book illustrates the script and is a stand-alone educational tool with games and puzzles. The coloring book may be ordered with your organization’s name printed on the cover and has been used by the Colorado Symphony as handouts for its educational program. Recorded on Bridge Records.

“Haunt ed Carnival†is a fun, spooky piece that first year students will enjoy performing during the Fall season. Using just five notes, this easy piece can be included on beginning musicians' first concert and was carefully constructed to stay within the limits of their abilities while also maintaining melodic and harmonic interest. The creepy celesta part can be played an octave higher on piano, and is integral to the piece as it establishes the tempo and provides harmonies not found in the string parts. The piece is divided into three main string parts: Violin I, Violin II/Viola, and Cello/Bass. The violin II and viola parts are identical and the cello and bass parts are in octaves. Unison rhythms ensure homogenous playing between sections, building confidence in the young ensemble. Download the free accompaniment track at carlfischer.com/bas89.

Commi ssioned by the St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute Jazz Ensemble of Kenmore, NY, this spirited Latin original for advancing groups is a real showstopper! The title in Portuguese means a samba school, referring to a club or dancing school. Throughout the year samba schools hold events, the most important being the annual spectacle known as Carnival. The groove here alternates between samba and partido alto rhythms. As the music plays, you can almost see the dancers in their elaborate, colorful costumes. The chart has been meticulously crafted to ensure that the rhythm section faithfully captures authentic Brazilian grooves. Solo space is reserved for alto sax and trumpet, and a guitar chord chart by Jim Greeson is included. Duration 5:25.
