This cantata was first performed in Leipzig on New Year's Day 1726. It belongs to a small group of compositions which were composed between Advent 1725 and mid-January 1726 and whose text were written by the same author. There is no reference to the New Year in connection with the circumcision and naming of Jesus in this afternoon worship service. Rather the thoughts in this work are concerned with the praise of God and thanks for his good deeds. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3101600.

On the 30th May 1726, as part of his third Leipzig annual cycle of cantatas, Bach directed the first performance of his Ascension Cantata Gott fahret auf mit Jauchzen. The libretto was published at Rudolstadt during the same year without any indication of the autor's name, in a collection entitled Sonn- und Fest-Tags-Andachten uber die ordenlichen Evangelia. The libretti in that collection had already been used during the Church year 1704/05 at the Court of Meiningen; their author may have been Duke Ernst Ludwig von Sachsen-Meiningen. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3104300.

The words are based on the Easter Gospel, the account of the Resurrection of Jesus, which is first joyfully celebrated. Then follows a call to the faithful: every Christian must make the Resurrection a reason to renew himself spiritually, so as to complete a kind of inner Resurrection himself. For his scoring - which changed slightly from performance to performance - Bach called upon a five-part choir, three trumpets and timpani, three oboes, taille and bassoon, strings and basso continuo. With a total duration of about 30 minutes, Schubert's Mass in B flat major (D 324), written in 1815, is considerably longer than Mozart's and Haydn's classical Brevis masses, and its large instrumental ensemble with strings, woodwinds, brass and timpani even gives it a clearly solemn character. Overall, Schubert was inspired by the late Haydn style of the symphonic mass (e.g., the division into six large movements, the omission of arias for the vocal soloists who are instead juxtaposed with the choir, singing short passages either singly or as a group) without, of course, achieving its temporal expansion. This is a representative, musically appealing work that excels with its multi-layered, detailed text treatment. It is, therefore, suitable for special occasions and the high feasts of the church year and can be mastered well by experienced church choirs. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4065700.

Ensembles which are not large enough to tackle the great masses by Schubert will find a suitable alternative in this compact Mass of 1816, scored for small forces. In size and length (c. 25 minutes) it is like a Missa brevis. The compositional structure is comparatively simple, but without lacking any of the typically Schubertian style in harmony or melody. The wind parts added later by the composer can be regarded as optional, as the work was originally scored for just the south German-Austrian church trio of 2 violins and organ. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4065800.
