Cyril Scott was an English composer, writer, and poet. He was essentially a late romantic composer, whose style was at the same time strongly influenced by impressionism. His harmony was notably exotic. Scott wrote around four hundred works,which include two mature symphonies, three operas, three Piano concertos,concertos for Violin, Cello, Oboe and Harpsichord, several overtures, four oratorios, as well as a mass of chamber music

In the mid-1990s in Memphis, Tennessee, the Alabama cellist Craig Hultgren performed my trio Two Poems (1989) with such dedication, brilliance, and comprehension that I vowed to write him a solo work in gratitude for his labors. Chambers of the Twilight is the result. The single-movement essay is through-composed -- it was written in one long day -- and entirely constructed from the juxtapositions, repetitions, and variations of three brief gestures announced by the soloist in the opening measures. The separation and congealing of these three musical events -- alternatively dramatic, melodic/misterioso, and violent -- provide the genesis for all of the ensuing sonic material. An extended coda -- marked delicato e lontano in the score -- gives way to large pizzicato chords which bring the piece to a close. The work exploits fully the dynamic range and registral capabilities of the cello, placing considerable demands on the dexterity and stamina of the soloist. Chambers of the Twilight is approximately fifteen minutes in duration. The score was composed on April 2, 2001, in Ormond-by-the-Sea, Florida, and was written for the 2001 Hultgren Solo Cello Works Biennial. It is composed in loving memory of my maternal grandfather Ernest A. Pilgrim, a fine sculptor and bridge-builder, and is dedicated, with thanks, to Mr. Hultgren.

Fran çois Glorieux was born in Belgium in 1932, and acclaimed throughout Europe, the USA, Latin America, Canada, Japan, China, the Middle East and Africa. Jobim, and so on.

Four Songs after Rexroth is a night cycle of poems and Chinese translations by Kenneth Rexroth that were chosen so that they might present a linear, nocturnal musical experience. The first song begins in the aura of twilight, before proceeding in the next two songs into a night of innermost thoughts and remembrances. In the last song, at dawn, transfiguration and transcendence is attained. The musical settings seek to evoke the beauty, mystery, anxiety, and sadness of the texts; this leads, in the third song - the emotional crux of the cycle - to the abandoment of conventional text declamation in favor of a non-verbal expression.

In 1979, Martin produced a set of three quintets, in consideration of Gorky's piece Nighttime Enigma Nostalgia. Each is scored for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano. One role of music is to evoke. Therefore, Nighttime is a nocturne, a night piece suggestive of flickering shadows, perhaps created by firelight. It is a recurrent setting in human existence. The music opens with the scene of twilight calm, gently disturbed with the slight uncertainty about what is around us, what we cannot see. Later, the clarinet takes on a solo role, and the notes bleed like careless paint into the other instruments that quietly sustain them. Next, the flute takes over the role of solo. I have used melodic segments from the Farinelli arias that are still extant today, as well as other Baroque vocal and formal elements, models inspired by the Singspiel and the musical, and even a rap piece over a techno rhythm. The musical center of the opera consists of song and the human voice. Farinelli is a bel canto opera. (Siegfried Matthus) Carlo Broschi, known as Farinelli, was the brightest star among the castrato tenors of the 18th century. Handels enemies brought him to London so that he could outshine Handels singers. Here, Matthus depicts Farinelli at the Spanish court, ruled by the pathologically melancholy King Philip V. In a review of his life, we relive important stages in the career of the singer, who lived outside of the norm and found his home in the fascinating twilight world between art and artificiality.
