Rheinberger composed the overture to the Singspiel Der arme Heinrioh in 1870, originally as a piece for piano, four hands. In the orchestral version which he made later this overture, as Rheinberger emphasised, can as well exist as an independent concert piece as any other overture of a comic character. With its cheerfulness and forward-driving energy it stands between such works as Schubert's Overtures in the Italian Style and the early symphonies of Bizet and Gounod. The world famous tale Hansel and Gretel by The Brothers Grimm was set to music in the 1890s by German composer Engelbert Humperdinck. The children's opera is performed regularly at many opera houses.
The Evening Prayer 'When at night I go to sleep', with which the two kids sing themselves to sleep, is one of the most famous songs of this opera, and is also used as the beginning of the overture.
This arrangement is scored for wind quintet with an english horn. In case no english horn should be available, we present an alternative version that features an oboe instead. The flute nd bassoon players will then use the same parts as in the version with english horn.

Dan Welcher’s fascinating work for soprano sax is both a refraction of Mendelssohn’s music for A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and his own incidental music to Shakespeare’s comedy. The work’s title, AS LIGHT AS BIRD FROM BRIER, quotes from Oberon (King of the Fairies) invoking revelry at the play’s climactic wedding scene. Welcher’s fantasy skips among the most beloved themes of Mendelssohn’s Midsummer – giving the saxophonist quite a workout, and the listener a midsummer delight.AS LIGHT AS BIRD FROM BRIER is loosely based on Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which has haunted me since I was nine years old. My parents subscribed me to The Children’s Record Guild, and every month a new 78rpm vinyl record would arrive in the mail. They were mostly fairy tales and “kids lit,†but in this case it was a very condensed performance of the actual play, with Mendelssohn’s music. I loved it immediately, and still do – I saw a performance in 2014 at the Stratford Festival that literally stalks my dreams.When I was commissioned by saxophonist Stephen Page to compose a work for soprano saxophone and piano two years later, I channeled Mendelssohn as an inspiration: specifically, the Overture, the Scherzo, the Intermezzo, the fairy’s song “You spotted snakes with double tongue,†and the Rustics’ Dance. But it’s not a pastiche – most of the music is completely my own, though attentive listeners will detect snatches of Mendelssohn’s haunting score throughout.This piece joins MILL SONGS and FLORESTAN’S FALCON among works honoring my favorite 19th-century composers (in those cases, Schubert and Schumann) without ripping them off. As Stravinsky did in his ballet Pulcinella, I have borrowed fragments of melody from a much-loved composer, and made a fabric of harmonies and scales that are genetically related to Mendelssohn, but unmistakably Welcher.In this work, the saxophonist is Puck – skittish, dazzlingly fast, and brilliant in the outer parts, and a mischievous Cupid in the long, central Love Song. (Remember how Puck anoints Titania’s eyes with the juice from a magic flower, which causes her to fall in love with Bottom the weaver, who has been bewitched and wears a donkey’s head?) The music traces Puck’s magic flight, the finding of the flower, Titania’s love-scene with Bottom and her fairies, and the rustic players – whose rehearsal of the funniest play-within-the-play in literature is interrupted by Puck’s dirty tricks.I greatly enjoyed the process of writing this piece, and often found myself quite moved even as I was writing it... which rarely happens. Stephen Page, who commissioned the work, is a consummate artist (and a bit of a Puck himself). The title comes from Oberon’s final speech in the play:Through the house, give glimmering light,By the dead and drowsy fire.Every elf and fairy spriteHop as light as bird from brier,And this ditty, after me,Sing, and dance it trippingly.

Both parts 1 and 2 can be enjoyed at a beginner to intermediate level, about the level of Burgmuller. The book contains carefully selected pieces from the famous Classical pieces that are especially popular among children. Recommended for students using score notation for the first time, as it is easy to read. The arrangements are designed to be easy to play even for small hands, while respecting the image of the original. It is also useful for teaching students to listen to the overall balance of the piece. In addition, in songs where the melody appears in both parts 1 and 2, you can enjoy the creative ways of aligning the playing style and playing over each other. The book is not too long, yet it is arranged in a satisfying size, making it a useful book for review sessions and recitals.

A musical fairytale

In 2015 Philipp Matthias Kaufmann was commissioned to write an arrangement for chamber ensemble with motifs of Humperdinck's famous opera. While the instrumentation offered a variety of possibilities soundwise, with the required 7 minutes playing time it was a challenging task for him to confine the arrangement to just a few motifs. Kaufmann chose a dramaturgic coherence for his arrangement; a pocket-sized instrumental fairytale was the result. Based on a version of the beautiful overture, the children's songs of the cheerful siblings Hansel and Gretel are played. Then, their father comes home, half-drunk to bear his life in poverty. For the sake of brevity, this is directly followed by the rumbling Witch's Ride. The gruff lady is then carefully stowed away in her oven, which leads to the jubilant finale. As an extract from a grand work, this arrangement does indeed have a charming impact, for Humperdinck's ideas can stand this kind of abridgement quite easily.A musical fairytale.

Heroes Among Us by Gary Fagan is an original overture-style work for string orchestra that was inspired by the many people who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure many school children who could not go to school received at least two hot meals each day throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. School bus drivers and cafeteria workers put in long hours to prepare meals and deliver them to students who otherwise may have gone hungry during the week. While teachers, nurses, doctors, etc. received accolades during the months when schools were out of session, many adults stepped in to take care of other necessities to ensure the well-being of the students they served.
