On a Sunday afternoon in May of 2011 tornados devastated the city of Joplin, Missouri. In Perfect Silence, I Often Gaze at the New Stars is intended as a musical tribute to those who lost their lives that day and to those heroes who gave everything they could to help others. The music is a beautiful blending of sounds and moods, and carries with it a full range of emotions from reflective quiet moments to the massive outpouring from the entire ensemble. An evocative and moving work for band that will resonate with both performers and listeners. Dur: 3:50.

Classic rock and roll is here merged with Kirby Shaw harmonies and style. There is a history lesson in this song as there are many references to major musical cities across America that will be fun to discover. The song was released by the band Starship and there is much rock history to be uncovered about the band and the time.

In 2014, I enjoyed a wonderful residence at the Ucross Foundation in Clearmont,Wyoming. Ucross is an artist colony that gives writers, composers, and visual artists thegift of time, space, and support to follow their artistic pursuits; we are provided withstudio space, housing, and meals so that we can work continuously on our projects. I havebeen in residence at numerous artist colonies; however, nothing in my previousexperiences prepared me for living in such isolated, wild country. Ucross is situated on a20,000-acre cattle ranch at nearly 4,000 feet in elevation with fewer than 150 peopleliving within the town. But what Clearmont lacks in population, it makes up forabundantly and spectacularly in wilderness and wildlife. I composed the sextet Postcardsfrom Wyoming to offer three glimpses of what I found to be the most striking aspects ofmy residence. The Solitude of Stars, the third and final movement of the original sextet, was inspired by the stunning nightly display of the heavens above. Without city lightsdimming the night sky, countless stars shone brightly over the vast expanse of the prairie. This edition is part of The Solitude of Stars Project that I undertook during the 2020COVID-19 pandemic, which consists of a series of arrangements that I made forcolleagues and friends. In 2014, I enjoyed a wonderful residence at the Ucross Foundation in Clearmont, Wyoming. Leokadiya Kashperova (1872–1940), hitherto consigned to a footnote in musical history as Stravinsky's piano teacher, is undergoing rediscovery. A double graduate of the St Petersburg Conservatoire, she emerged as a virtuoso pianist and composer in the romantic tradition. She was associated with some of the great musicians of her day, including Balakirev and Auer. She performed in both Germany and the UK in the 1900s, but her career petered out after 1920. Following her graduation from the St Petersburg Conservatoire Kashperova became personally acquainted with the poet Yakov Polonsky and often attended his literary gatherings. When he died in 1898 Kashperova responded by setting his enchanting and mystical 'legend' To a Child in Answer to the Question: Where Do the Stars Come From? The baritone soloist takes the role of the father or grandfather who endeavours to answer the riddle posed in the title. He decides to relate 'a tale of old, an Eastern legend' which recounts how, long ago, the flowers would weep, so afraid were they of the dark. In response an archangel (soprano solo) descends to Earth and is so moved by the flowers’ anguished appeal, she gathers 'all their tears in chalice gold / And bears them up to God in Heav'n above'. The baritone narrates the final scene as the Almighty casts the tears across the firmament, thus creating the constellations. The child’s question is answered, and the peaceful domesticity of the opening scene returns.
