The songs in this collection include the modern art song Legend of Rosemary (verse by Reginald Arkell) a bluesy Stop All The Clocks (W H Auden) the droll dizziness of desire The Bakery (13th Korean courtesan) creepy evocation of mother’s love juxtaposed with evil using three keys simultaneously in Infant Song (Charles Causley) and the poignant My Boy Jack haunting modal Harp Song of the Dane Women and a contemplation of wrongdoing using constantly shifting key and time signatures in Gertrude’s Prayer (all Rudyard Kipling).Contemporary English composer singer and Vocal coach Betty Roe is best known for her church and Choral music revue songs music for schools and solosongs like these. She has a particular affinity for setting poetry imaginatively and sensitively.

This work was commissioned by the Presteigne Festival of Music and the Arts Ltd. with theaid of funds provided by the John S. Cohen Foundation and the PRS Foundation. The firstperformance was given by Rachel Nicholls and Paul Plummer at St. Andrew’s Church Presteigne on 29 August 2005.Composer's NoteGladestry Quatrains is a setting of 12 short poems by Jo Shapcott from her collection of the same title. It originated in a project for the 2003 Presteigne Festival called A Garland for Presteigne in which 10 composers associated with the Festival were asked to write a short song each celebrating the Welsh border country the choice of poetryranged widely and I chose two of Jo Shapcott’s evocative miniatures (still adding up to slightly less than the timing I had been requested to provide!). As I wrote them I started to make sketches for some more settings from the same collection and the Presteigne Festival of Music and the Arts very kindly commissioned this new larger song-cycle proper for their 2005 Festival. The original pair of poems form the third (Gwaithla Brook) and last (Cefn Hir) of the songs in which the eighth combines two poems Burl Hill and Newchurch. Throughout I have been aware of the sights and sounds of nature the character of the landscape and the sense of history and timelessness of this beautiful part of the world as reflected in Jo Shapcott’s poetry as well as (I hope) the wit and directness of her expression. The whole work though it has eleven songs still lasts only about 20 minutes the concision of the texts and the need to find musical equivalents to this was an important part of the concept of the piece.        John McCabe 2005

Cheryl Frances-Hoad's One Life Stand for Mezzo-Soprano with Piano accompaninment sets a text by Sophie Hannah. 'The idea for One Life Stand originated from a discussion over lunch in Cambridge with my friend Jennifer Johnston. She was bemoaning the fact that although she loved to sing Schumann’s Frauen-Liebe und Leben (Women’s Lives and Loves) and was always being asked to do so she did find Chamisso’s words rather outdated and suggested I write an updated version. I jumped at the chance and by pudding we were already thinking about whose poetry I might set. A few weekslater during a meeting with Chris Gribble (Chief Executive of Writers’ Centre Norwich) he told us that the crime writer and poet Sophie Hannah had recently moved to Cambridge and had many suitable poems. It wasn’t long before we all met up for lunch and began discussing the contenders for a series of poems that might portray a modern woman’s life and loves. To begin with I had a list of about twenty five poems that I would have liked to set taken from four of Sophie’s poetry collections (The Hero and the Girl Next Door (1995) Hotels like Houses (1996) First of the Last Chances (2003) and Pessimism for Beginners (2007: all published by Carcanet Press) but the final eight in my view come together to form a narrative that is clear yet open to interpretation and contains the whole gamut of complex emotions (both serious and humorous) that made the poems such a dream to set to music. Although the idea for the work originated as a reaction to Chamisso’s poetry in the course of composing the cycle I found much inspiration from Schumann’s song cycle and many of the songs in my work are based very closely on either the harmony and/or the motivic material of what in my view is the “corresponding” song in Frauen-Liebe und Leben.' - Cheryl Frances-Hoad
