The musical appeal of the Blues, as they began to be heard in the early twentieth century, was so infectious that musicians with open minds and ears were drawn to it as soon as they heard it. And that appeal crossed the racial and ethnic divides that characterized American society. So it was, that even before African American guitarists were recorded playing fingerstyle blues guitar, their white neighbors had already begun learning the music?listening to, watching, and imitating the musicians whose music they so admired. And what these white musicians ended up expressing in their own playing and singing was not simply imitation, but their own reconfiguration of what their models did, played in accordance with their own senses of rhythm, phrasing and how to sing the music.In Hillbilly Fingerstyle Blues Guitar, author John Miller offers transcriptions, in tablature and standard notation, of twenty-eight pieces by these white fingerstyle blues players, taken from recordings made in the period 1926?1970. Some of the featured musicians in the book, like Sam McGee, Frank Hutchison, Maybelle Carter, Hobart Smith, and Roscoe Holcomb are pretty well known, but the tunes by more obscure players like Debs Mays, Lake Howard, or Lester McFarland certainly don?t suffer by comparison, and in many instances are spectacular. The pieces have been chosen for variety, too?you?ll encounter pieces played in C, E, and A in standard tuning, as well as songs in Open G, Open D tunings and an exotic offshoot of Open G tuning. Par FREEMAN ALEX. Alex Freeman found initial inspiration for his string quartet (2015) in a series of photographs a geologist friend showed him of en échelon veins in rock formations. The open strings punctuated with pizzicato unisons that begin the single-movement work call to mind something crystalline and shimmering, which is immediately infused with tumbling lyrical lines in something of a rapid caccia technique throughout. The middle of the work becomes more suspended in slower material loosely based on a technique of prolation canon, comprises layers of free, expressive, lyrical, and even elegiac music moving at different speeds. As the work concludes, the materials converge in a rhythmically pulsating stasis and an almost chorale-like statement. Duration: c. 13' This product includes the score and the parts (A4 sized). American-Finnish composer Alex Freeman (b.1972) has established himself among the foremost composers of choral music in Finland. A dedicated citizen of his musical community, a teacher, and a choral singer himself, he composes music that reflects an appreciation for a wide range of aesthetics and a passion for communicating with listeners and performers. In his choral works, in particular, we find music that aims to be sonorous, melodic, and resonant, but is always crafted to carefully avoid the cliches that can burden conventional tonality. Quirky New Piano Pieces-'In choosing to call this set of 25 pieces The FitzTanner Collection I make a tongue-in-cheek allusion to the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book.The FitzTanner Collection doffs its cap in the direction of this seminal ancient tome by borrowing some of the more fanciful and suggestive titles from which it is comprised but beyond this there is no musical connection with the original pieces at all. And yet stirred into the mix is my fondness for melding together bygone musical styles. Hence this album of piano pieces pitched at the more robust intermediate pianist combines quirky originality with older musical styles drawinginspiration not just from Renaissance dances and fantasies but from more elaborate Baroque and Classical styles too. That said the music is conceived very much with the qualities of the modern piano in mind and hence requires a good many pedal effects dynamics and plenty of expression. What emerges is I hope a collection of attractive piano pieces which cheerfully bear the traces of a time when the modern piano was but a twinkle in the eye.There is an enjoyable charisma to the Old English spellings of these pieces (as well as a healthy margin for idiosyncrasy I might add) and to my own creations I have taken great delight in adding a few light-hearted directions which I trust won't cause too much consternation. Not all of the Fitzwilliam titles are easily fathomed but the playful risqué and politically incorrect overtones are sometimes quite striking leading me to contemplate a similarly unserious vein in my own writing. To what (or indeed to whom) you may ask does 'Quodlings Delight' refer? I'm not sure I'd recognise a Quodling if it crawled out of my porridge (and likewise who the eponymous Barafostus might have been is anybody's guess). Perhaps on balance the music is best left to speak for itself and regardless of how many ways an old title can be reworked it will always come down to living breathing
