Among the most frequently performed and well-known of P. I. Tchaikovsky's (1840-1893) works, The Year 1812, Solemn Overture, Op. 49 (more commonly known as the 1812 Overture) was written in 1880 to commemorate the 1812 defeat of Napoleon's invading French army by the Russians. Despite the composer's lack of enthusiasm about the project at its inception, claiming that he wrote it without any warm and loving feelings, Tchaikovsky acknowledged later that he did well in its composition, saying I absolutely do not know whether my overture (The Year 1812) is good or bad, but I rather think it is the former (pardon my immodesty). It premiered on August 20, 1882, in Moscow at the Art & Industry Exhibition, Ippolit Altani conducting. Famous for its use of cannons in the Finale, the Finale also calls for the inclusion of a military brass band, which is labelled as open instrumentation in the original. This edition by Martin Schmeling spells out specific instrumentation options for the banda. This work was commissioned by the civilian wind orchestra Shimizu il compagno, based in Shimizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, as a commemorative work for their 10th Anniversary. The world premiere was performed by the ensemble, conducted by Hiromichi Hamada in 2017. Having held discussions with the head of the orchestra, Tomohiro Tsuji, and members of the group, Satoshi Yagisawa settled on a central motif for this commemorative work: fellow, or companion, in the sense of the Italian il compagno, which features in the orchestra’s name. The work also strives to describe the characteristic friendliness of Shimizu city, a place known for itswarmth and kindness which is visible from both Mount Fuji and the sea. The composition is written in Yagisawa’s typical dramatic style with an atmosphere of scintillating light and lyrical warmth, making it an excellent choice for opening a concert.

While serving as music director of Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra (1962-65), Jones was commissioned for a work to commemorate the 35th anniversary of that organization. The result was Overture for a City, which was premiered by SBSO in October, 1964. Today, fifty years later, the World Doctors Orchestra, an organization of physician/musicians from all over the world, is making its West Coast debut. The WDO traditionally chooses a work by a composer native to the country in which they perform, and for this Seattle concert they chose Sam Jones and his Overture for a City.

Forev er Free composed at the request of the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, André Raphel, Music Director, to celebrate the sesquicentennial of the State of West Virginia. Maestro Raphel suggested a work incorporating indigenous elements of the State's musical heritage, capturing in musical sound the robust spirit of West Virginia citizens and the celebratory atmosphere surrounding the year-long commemoration of the State's 150th anniversary, June 20, 2013. Forever Free is cast in one movement in three sections, with the title inspired by the state motto, “Montani semper liberi,” usually translated as “Mountaineers forever free.” Versions for both orchestra and wind band are available.
