This collection of sixteen pieces by John Blow (1649-1708), taken from the complete organ music published in Volume 69 of Musica Britannica, is an authoritative introduction to the work of the leading Restoration English composer of organ music. More organ music from this period is ascribed to Blow than to all his English contemporaries put together, including Henry Purcell. In compiling this anthology, the editor has incorporated both the best examples from the corpus, and those that were most popular in the composer's lifetime, while illustrating the variety of styles he used. Most of the pieces may be played ona single manual, but there are also 'double voluntaries' (for two manuals) and 'cornet voluntaries' (for two or three manuals). In 1739 Bach's Third Part of the Clavier Übung was published on 80 pages closely printed. Ever since then the collection has been regarded as a high point in the history of organ composition as it offers an impressive cross section of Bach's artistry.This present volume is an updated edition of Volume 4, Series IV, of the New Bach Edition, presented by Manfred Tessmer in 1969. A fully revised edition proved unnecessary, as there were relatively few corrections affecting the musical text. However, the volume now includes a detailed Preface by Christoph Wolff which discusses not only the work's genesis but also offers an up-to-date description of the sources. For the new engraving of the musical text page-turns were reviewed and improved.Bach's autograph is considered lost and so the main source is the original print of the collection from 1739. In collaboration with the Leipzig Bach Archive and its database Bach digital this new edition includes links to two important copies of the original print which contain hand-written entries by Bach himself.Any complete scholarly-critical edition of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach must, in the interest of its use by researchers and performers, incorporate intervening new discoveries wherever possible. With this in mind, Bärenreiter has entered an agreement with the Leipzig Bach Archive to reissue particular volumes as applicable, either in updated performing editions based on the New Bach Edition or in thoroughly revised editions based on the New Bach Edition - revised. Volume VI presents 42 easy to moderately difficult pieces without pedal for organ or harmonium in every key, and brings the complete edition of Théodore Dubois' organ works to a close. With their contrasting length and character, the pieces offer a wide range of performance possibilities both inside and outside the liturgy. Since Dubois was a master of melody, several of the pieces can also be rendered on the piano, further enhancing the collection's practical value. / Orgue

Alongside the organ music of François Couperin and Louis-Nicolas Clérambault Nicolas de Grigny's only publication marks the apogee of Grand siècle organ music. The 1699 book contains a complete organ mass and alternatim settings of the five principal hymns for use at the more important feasts of the church year. How it was received at the time is unknown yet the publication was considered of sufficient value to have been independently copied by JS Bach and JG Walter and was also reprinted in 1711 by the Paris publisher Christophe Ballard.

The now-published volumes 9 and 10 have presented a special challenge, for particularly in the field of the chorale arrangements the transmissions are more complex than in any other group of works. This ties in with the crucial question of Bach?s authorship, which has been the subject of much controversy in the past. There were heated discussions about it even just prior to our edition, and editors and publisher are aware that the present selection is a thoroughly debatable snapshot. The so called ?Neumeister-Choräle? are incorporated in the group of the separately transmitted chorale settings in alphabetical order, because thecompilation of the pieces does not follow any collection idea of Bach (such as, for example, his larger late collections). The indication ?Neumeister-Sammlung? should facilitate the attribution. The Orgelbüchlein Project is a collective composition project aiming to complete Bach's unfinished manuscript known as 'Orgelbüchlein'. In the 'Little Organ Book', Bach laid out a complete hymnal of short organ chorale, 164 in all, but only completed 46 of them. Why the remaining 118 were left as blank pages, with only a title at the head, remains a mystery, but they inspired organists William Whitehead to found the Orgelbüchlein Project, in which contemporary composers are invited to contribute a piece to completing the collection. The resulting collection, to be published in eight volumes, represents a cross-section of the most interesting composers at work today across Europe. The New Edition of Bach's Complete Organ Works With repertoire works, musicians often have the choice between editions conceived for practical music-making and others that are more scholarly in concept. This also applies to the organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach, which are available today in various editions. Among them is that of Heinz Lohmann, which Breitkopf and Härtel began publishing in 1967 and whose concept strove for an amalgamation of practice and Urtext. Werner Breig (* 1932) studied Evangelical church music in Berlin as well as musicology in Erlangen and Hamburg. He obtained his doctorate in 1962 and completed his habilitation (postdoctoral lecturing qualification) in 1973. He then devoted himself to musicology at the Universities of Freiburg i. Br, Karlsruhe, Wuppertal and Bochum. Since his retirement in 1997 he has been living in Erlangen. Between 1997 and 2007 Breig was appointed General Editor of the complete edition of Richard Wagners letters. He is the author of many publications and editions, particularly of early clavier and organ music by Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach, but also of Richard Wagner and Arnold Schoenberg. Furthermore he is the author of the Bach article in the dictionary Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (MGG, 2nd edition). Pieter Dirksen (* 1961) studied organ, harpsichord and musicology. His 1996 doctoral thesis on Sweelinck's keyboard music was awarded the Praemium Erasmianum. Dirksen has since published many studies on, and editions of, several masters of the 17th century (Sweelinck, Bull, Cornet, Scheidt, Scheidemann, Buxtehude, Luebeck, Johann Christoph Bach) as well as Johann Sebastian Bach. In collaboration with Harald Vogel, he edited Sweelinck's Complete Works for Keyboard Instrument (4 volumes, Breitkopf and Härtel). Dirksen is a member of the academic board of the Bach-Jahrbuch as well as a sought-after harpsichordist, organist and continuo player in international ensembles. Dirksen issued a number of much-acclaimed solo recordings (Sweelinck, Scheidemann, Boehm, Louis Couperin, Bach-Vivaldi, Bachs Art of Fugue and Goldberg Variations). Edison Winner 2003. Reinmar Emans (* 1953) studied musicology in Bonn and wrote his doctoral thesis on the cantatas and canzonettas of Giovanni Legrenzi in 1982. From 1983 to 2008 he was an academic staff member of the Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Institut Göttingen, and temporarily deputy of the managing director. He has taught in Bochum, Marburg, Detmold, Cologne and Hamburg, and has been a freelance contributor to various music periodicals. In 2000 he was responsible for the conception and direction of the Thuringian state exhibition 'Der junge Bach: Weil er nicht aufzuhalten' in Erfurt.
