WERG O is going to release another highlight in the 'Carl Orff' DVD edition series: A film version of Orff's first stage work 'Gisei - Das Opfer' by the film director Peider A. Defilla. 'Gisei' is set in the year 902 in a village school in Japan and is about the sacrificial death of a child. Both the subject and the Japanese culture greatly inspired the young Carl Orff, and he remained an aficionado of Japan all his life. In the Japanese tragedies, Orff also found numerous references to the ancient Greek tragedies by Sophokles with which he concerned himself decades later. The DVD shows the world premiere production of John Dew (who was awarded the Carl Orff Prize 2012 only recently) at the Darmstadt State Theatre. Lavish costumes as well as carefully rehearsed facial expressions and gestures convey a deep impression of this tragedy. The following 15-minute bonus film includes interesting additional information on Orff's oeuvre and particularly on his work on 'Gisei'. Language: German?/English? Sound format: Dolby Stereo Picture format: 16:9? Disk type: DVD 9? Country code: (0) PAL Length: ca. 65+15 min.

Hayato Hirose composed this dramatic piece based on the great journey of Marco Polo, Italian traveller and one of the first Europeans ever to visit Asia. In the 13th century, he made a long journey from Venice to Mongolia with his father. After his arrival, he was sent to the various regions in Asia by the Mongolian government to take notes about the culture, the people, and the way of life in those areas. Celebrate the life of this great explorer with this dynamic new concert work.

Composer and organist, Joseph Bonnet (1884-1944) is considered one of the most major French pipe organ players. It is no surprise, therefore, that his Concert Variations for Organ are very well informed. Following his studies at the Paris Conservatoire, Bonnet took over as concert organist at the institution. Concert Variations for Organ was compiled in 1906, soon after his graduation. The work begins with a helpful index of the organ registrations and performance directions. Concert Variations begins with a virtuosic, cadenza-like theme in E minor. Following this, four variations are heard, all containing contrast in organ sound, tonality and exploited melody and rhythm. For all advanced, aspiring organists, Bonnet's Concert Variations is an essential addition to the repertoire.
