The effective use of solo percussion, combined with an elegant orchestration, brought a warm reception at the premiere of this work from Satoshi Yagisawa’s ‘Concertino Series’. Yagisawa’s style is usually considered as rather dramatic, however, inthis piece he adds a whole new dimension to his compositional skills.

As The Last Light Fades is a programmatic work, capturing the gradual shift when the sunset gives way to a brief moment of twilight, and the stars begin to take their place in the heavens waiting for darkness to blanket the sky. As the sun starts to descend beyond the horizon, a light rainfall plays percussively on the leaves hanging above. The music conveys the feeling of peace and tranquility that one can only really experience in nature, an ethereal and almost transcendent connection, undisturbed by the disruptions of the modern world.

Durin g his experience as a band conductor and teacher of wind orchestra conducting at university, Franco Cesarini has dealt with the topic of warm-ups very frequently. Throughout these long years of conducting he has had the opportunity to try many existing methods, evaluating their advantages and disadvantages. After a long time, he has decided to compile a collection of chorales for warm-ups, which are organized according to the criteria that he considers most effective. While working on his60 Warm-up Chorales for Concert Band, Franco Cesarini has always borne in mind that amateur musicians play for pleasure. He feels that it is extremely important that they have satisfaction at every moment of the rehearsal and not to start the rehearsal with needless “punishing†exercises. Nobody is really motivated to start playing with scales, long notes, or tricky rhythmical exercises. There is often a distinguished absentee in band rehearsals, namely music itself! Although this publication does not foresee a specific tempo for the chorales, they should often be performed rather slowly but without dragging. Dynamics are not indicated, so that the conductor has the opportunity to draw the attention of the musicians to his gestures and to make them react according to his indications. Timpani and bell parts have been added with the aim of not leaving the percussionists completely inactive during the warm-up phase, but can also be omitted. The chorales are written in four parts (SATB) and are also playable in smaller groups. The four voices can be played in different combinations of woodwinds or brass quartets or in mixed combinations. The collection includes ten chorales for the following keys: D flat major, A flat major, E flat major, B flat major, F major and C major. With his 60 Warm-up Chorales Franco Cesarini would like to convey the message to play the chorales in a musical way, thus raising the musicians’awareness of phrasing, the right interpretation of cadences, rubato and agogic. Above all, never do anything withoutputting the musical aspect in the foreground.

Best playability and musical spirit - this is what characterizes the music of Bertold Hummel who died in 2002, and why his music must be part of the repertoire of any amateur and semi-professional orchestra. The Oregon Symphony occupies a special position in his oeuvre: it was written by Hummel for the typically American symphonic wind bands, requiring almost 100 musicians, including 15 clarinets in three groups of five alone, as well as four piccolos and six flutes, bass clarinet, bassoons, saxophones, trumpets, horns, tubas and the typically American sousaphone, and five percussionists. The work consists of four movements; in the rousing finale, Hummel mixes jazz motifs with popular themes and even weaves the anthem of the State of Oregon in the final music. For getting better acquainted with this music, the first movement is also separately available ('Symphonische Ouverture', SHS 1001).Picc. * 2 * 2 * Klar. in Es * 3 * Bassklar. in B * 2 Altsax. in Es * Tenorsax. in B * Baritonsax. in Es * 2 - 4 * 3 (Korn.) * 3 * Tenorhr. in B (Bar.) * 2 - P. WERTHER, an opera in four acts by Jules Massenet (1842-1912), found its inspiration in a novel by Goethe, The Sorrows of Young Werther, which in turn based its story on the actual suicide of a young man haunted with adoration for a married woman. First performed on February 16, 1892 in Vienna, it quickly reached the stage of the Theatre Lyrique in Paris but faltered due to its serious subject matter. The growing success of Massenet's opera Manon allowed it to be introduced to Germany. From there, it achieved fame in opera houses across the world. In the third act, Werther sings Pourquoi me réveiller? (Why do you awaken me, oh breath of spring?), contrasting his blissful realization that Charlotte has accepted his love with the impending realization that their happiness cannot last. A slow and somber Grave introduction leads to a light-hearted Allegro, presenting an ideal piece to teach sonata form to your students. The clearly marked bowings and artist-level fingerings will save precious rehearsal minutes and contribute to a professional sound. This arrangement re-scores the first movement of Sinfonia No. 9 from six voices, requiring two separate viola parts, to the traditional five-voice string orchestra. Consistent with selected professional performances of the work, the first of two recapitulations has been seamlessly omitted to create a more balanced form, eliminate redundancies akin to counterpoint exercises, and showcase the young composer's emerging creativity by emphasizing his striking use of the key of A-major before reaffirming the home key. The elimination of a repeat reduces the duration to 8:30. (11:30) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Prog ramme Note Poul Ruders WIND-DRUMMING WIND-DRUMMING was written in 1979 on a commission from The Danish Percussion Ensemble. The piece is a clash of two kinds of sound-associations, the mystic, exotic impact of Latin-American drumming, and the more well dressed reputation of Western concert-instruments, in this case a wind-quintet (w. electric flute). The two instrumental camps either melt into one soft humming ritual or are split wide apart, the winds tearing their way through the undergrowth of rainforest-drumming. There is more than one way of getting on to WIND-DRUMMING: obviously it is about the confrontation of two incongruent ways of living, a lament on the damage done tothe tropical rainforests of the world by modern civilisation. One can hear it plainly as a direct rhythm-show, a downright number or a joyous homage to the most exiting kind of folkloristic music at all: the carnal spell of the Brazilian Samba. Poul Ruders.
