This piece was composed in the summer of 2000, on commission of the Whightull Wind Ensemble. Seaside Road is a march in two-four time. The work begins with a tempestuous sound, followed by a light passage. Featuring, amongst others, your Bass Clarinet and Euphonium soloists in the trio section, the work builds towards an agile tutti before concluding with a powerful closing section. Concert Piece No. 5 (also known as Concert Sketch No. 5) was composed in 1938 and is the only one of five of these works that are known. The Legend of Spirit Island was commissioned by the Twin Ports Wind Orchestra, Duluth, Minnesota (Mark Whitlock, conductor), to honour the euphonium player, Dick Carlson. The piece takes its title from a local legend about Spirit Island, which lies in a gap of the St. Louis River called Spirit Lake. The legend tells the story of Chaska, the son of a Dakota Chief, and Wetona, the daughter of Ojibwe Chief Buckado. He was handsome and she was beautiful; it wasn’t long before they fell in love. This is a challenging euphonium solo in which the versatile soloist can explore very expressive melodic sequences, as well as energetic, technical sections.The Legend of Spirit Island werd geschreven in opdracht van de het Twin Ports Wind Orchestra uit Duluth, Minnesota (dirigent Mark Whitlock) als eerbetoon aan euphoniumspeler Dick Carlson. Arnald Gabriel, this composition is for virtuoso soloist and concert band. It calls for expressive phrasing especially through the Lento and Andante sections. Smith incorporates mixed meters and his signature 7/8 bar to create a dance-like lift. A concert showpiece that contains a challenging cadenza for the soloist. The Five Pieces in Folk Style by Schumann were originally written for Cello and Piano. They have been expertly transcribed for Euphonium by Ralph Sauer, retired Principal Trombonist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Rainb ow in the Clouds is based on an old traditional spiritual, possibly an African-American song from the 19th century, entitled God Put a Rainbow in the Clouds. Composer Carol Brittin Chambers was inspired by poetic Maya Angelou to create of setting of this beautiful song. It is lush and beautiful throughout and will highlight the musicianship of your students. This would serve as a welcome change of pace piece on your program for concert or contest.Rainbow in the Clouds was commissioned by the Pflugerville Middle School Wind Ensemble in Pflugerville, Texas, directed by Shauna Satrom. The piece premiered in May 2017, in memory and celebration of Luis Ham, who was an Assistant Principal at Pflugerville Middle School.This piece is based on an old traditional spiritual, possibly an African-American song from the nineteenth century, entitled God Put a Rainbow in the Clouds. The first time I heard reference to this song was in a Maya Angelou video, in which she sings a portion of it: “When it looked like the sun wouldn’t shine anymore, Oh, God put a rainbow in the clouds.†In the video, Dr. Angelou honors those who have demonstrated kindness to her in the past, and she suggests that we all try to be a blessing to others. The Pflugerville community believed that Mr. Ham, with his positive outlook, was definitely a “rainbow in the clouds†for other people.The piece begins with a full ensemble introduction, followed by a woodwind treatment of the first verse with a fairly reserved tempo and straight eighth-note rhythm. When brass pick up the melody on the second phrase, we start to hear the song more like the original spiritual, with dotted-eighth, sixteenth rhythms. The middle section of the piece at m. 22 begins to move at a slightly quicker tempo, and the mood becomes lighter. This section becomes a call-and-response between a euphonium solo and upper woodwinds. Vocalise is the second movement from Satoshi Yagisawa’s Trombone Concerto. Yagisawa finally decided to publish this movement as a separate piece, since it has been frequently performed independently and on the euphonium, tenor saxophone or the trombone. Just like the title implies, Vocalise exhibits a warm, gentle chorale-like feel that any audience will enjoy. Also available in an edition with piano accompaniment. Glenn Van Looy, born in Bonheiden, Belgium, is an exceptional euphonium player of the 21st century. His musical journey began early under the guidance of his father, a bass trombonist. He studied at renowned institutions such as the Secondary School of Art in Antwerp and the Lemmens Institute in Leuven. Van Looy excels both as a soloist and ensemble player, and he was already a member of prestigious brass bands at a young age. His solo career has been celebrated with numerous awards at international competitions across Europe and beyond. Yet, his accomplishments go beyond competitions; he has also collaborated as a sought-after concert soloist with esteemed orchestras like the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra and the European Youth Brass Band. Glenn Van Looy's remarkable achievements have earned him prestigious titles, including victory at the Ern Keller Memorial in Sydney, Australia, as International Soloist of the Year. He also won the international soloist competitions of Jeju and Lieksa in 2011 and 2012. A new collaboration emerged with composers Otto M. Schwarz and Thomas Doss. Together with them, he created the book “Glenn van Looy presents 5 Concert Pieces for Euphonium & Piano,” published by Symphonic Dimensions Publishing. This work contributes to the expansion of the euphonium repertoire and underlines Van Looy's commitment.
