The word GONG is saturated with associations: the splendour of the Orient, mysticism, drama, loud metallic clangour, violent impact, etc. The present piece draws upon all those connotations, but it is primarily a symphonic drama about the life and behaviour of the sun, our closest star and prime source of life on Earth. Describing the sun in music is not a new idea, of course; during a visit to Greece, Carl Nielsen was inspired by the orbit of the sun and its very un-Danish ferocity and thus wrote the Helios Overture. GONG is a Helios Overture too, of sorts, albeit more abstract. Recent astronomical research shows, that the surface of the sun reverberates like a gong, in four different, simultaneous tempi (not directly depicted in the score, though); the sun looks like a GONG, - the O in the written work looks like the sun; there is even a solar research group called GONG (Global Oscillation Network Group). Formally the composition follows the life and fate of the sun, from the initial explotional birth through the hyper-activity as energy source as we know it today to the final, predicted flaring up and collapse into a so-called white dwarf. But - being a musical composition, not an astrophysical thesis - GONG is brought to its compositional conclusion by a real concert-ending, a chord taken from the middle of the piece and sustained over several bars, from virtual nothingness to full force.

Jan Rybarskis Fantasia for Organ is a work of a great emotional impact. Its romantic dramaturgy leads the listener into the state of deep reflections. The work is monumental; its structure resembles a one-part sonata with a fugue in the middle fragment. The arrangement requires organs with minimum 16-18 voices in two manuals. Despite fast passages and at times complicated harmony that require a lot of practice, the work is played with comfort. The author, as an organist-practitioner, uses difficult technical elements that he controls in a perfect manner. The proportion of the traditional and modern harmonics is ideal, which means it perfectly corresponds to the dramaturgy of the work. The main formative element is the rhythm that - as the author claims himself - inspires, opens both the performer and the listener to the experience. The structure of the Fantasia brings connotations to the course of a human life, with a film story that apparently is different for everyone, but conveys one truth common to all people: in order to overcome difficulties, you need to trust God.

Adagio/ Minuetto/ Allegro/ GigaMario Gangi lavishes his remarkable versatility on this duo, engaging in a masterly fashion in a Baroque-style composition with repeats, progressions, imitations and embellishments which are managed extremely naturally.The manuscript is basic, without fingering, indications of expression, agogic or dynamic, with the exception of the Giga in which some accented notes and crescendo and decrescendo signs appear that are faithfully reproduced here.Since this is a Suite in Baroque style, it was not thought suitable to burden it with dynamic and expressive indications, thus leaving a certain amount of freedom to the performers.The fingering and the (few) indications concerning tone-colour have been added bearing in mind the instrumental concept of the Maestro.This Suite barocca, together with the Suite spagnola and the Suite italiana, makes up part of a hypothetical tryptich, certainly varied but with stylistic connotations which refer to the musical conception of Mario Gangi.
