Longtemps considérée comme anonyme, cette mélodie aurait été composée au milieu des années 1820 par Sir Henry Rowley Bishop. Bien que cette théorie fut difficilement concevable pour certains (comment un Anglais aurait-il pu composer un célèbre air traditionnel écossais ?), elle reste néanmoins la plus communément admise. Il existe plusieurs textes accompagnant cet air. Le titre Dance Away dérive de la phrase « Dance away the hours together » extraite des paroles de Sir Hugh Roberston. Dance Away fait référence à diverses formes de danses. Certaines puisentleurs racines dans la tradition, d’autres dans la modernité.
