This book of nocturnes is directed toward the music teachers who do not teach Jazz and to their students who are not yet committed to learn Jazz improvisations. Some of my piano books contain improvisations transcribed from my recordings important for jazz students who wish to study how improvisations develop from basic thematic and harmonic material. However these Nocturnes pensive in mood are complete in themselves and I hope they will serve as a bridge for the classical pianist to understand the music that is often the foundation for my Jazz performances. The American jazz legend Dave Brubeck (1920-2012) was equally distinguished as composer and pianist. Studies at the College of the Pacific and with Darius Milhaud at Mills College led to the founding with fellow students of the experimental Jazz Workshop Ensemble which recorded in 1949 as the Dave Brubeck Octet. Later in 1958 the combination of Brubeck with drummer Joe Morello double bassist Eugene Wright and alto saxophonist Paul Desmond quickly achieved an overwhelming popular success as the Dave Brubeck Quartet. The Quartet's experimentation with time signatures unusual to jazz produced works like Blue Rondo a la Turk and TakeFive introducing millions of enthusiastic young listeners to unexplored regions of jazz.This folio contains several of his most popular works arranged for Piano Voice and Guitar.

The seven pieces in this volume are excerpted from two ballet suites composed by Dave Brubeck. Struttin' and Doing the Charleston are from the four-movement set Glances. Also included are five selections from Points on Jazz: Prelude * Scherzo * Rag * Waltz * A la Turk. Brubeck himself describes Glances as my most Milhaud-inspired work, a tribute to the French composer with whom Dave studied composition. Points on Jazz was commissioned by the American Ballet Theatre and the cover of this incredible collection features Dave at the piano surrounded by the dancers. Par BRUBECK DAVE. The classic jazz number Take Five was first recorded by the Dave Brubeck Quartet and released on its 1959 album Time Out. Composed by Paul Desmond, the group's saxophonist, it became famous for its distinctive, catchy melody and use of quintuple time, from which the piece got its name. Par BRUBECK DAVE. This jazz standard composed by Dave Brubeck came to notoriety on the landmark 1957 Miles Davis/Gil Evans collaboration Miles Ahead. This arrangement takes the composition in a somewhat different direction with a fully-notated Afro-Cuban groove.
