The march Defenders Day is named for the legal holiday in Maryland which commemorates the successful defense of the city of Baltimore on September 12, 1814 from an invading British force during the War of 1812. This event would lead to the writing of the United States of America's national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner. The form and style follow the standard American march format and is perfect for festival performance.

Defen ders of the oppressed and fighters against injustice, Victor Hugo and Emile Zola often put their genius to the service of great causes: the abolition of the death penalty and child labor, the advancement of women in society, the awareness of the Dreyfus affair... Conceived in the same years and under the same sky, the much less profound words of Baroness Staffe in her manual of good manners, vehemently denounce both the wearing of white socks and the dangers of orientalism. This musical chronicle will educate and intrigue middle and high school students and amuse adults as well.

Score of the Danish Composer's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra written in 1996. Bent Sorensen writes: 'The title of this piano concerto came, as usual, very early to me, when my thoughts about the work had started to circulate, but before 'real' music was written down. I held on to the Italian title, even though its association with Vivaldi had no influence on my music, and even when German, French, English, and Danish titles covering almost the same content -'Nachtmusik', 'Nocturne', 'By Night', 'Om Natten', were just about to get the upper hand. The piano concerto has, then, in my opinion, something to do with night, but to describe this further is at least as difficult to me as it is to defend the final Italian title against those which were rejected. The Piano Concerto is in two movements. The first, swarming, is perhaps the mystery of the night, and the second perhaps the dreams of the night; with this, however, I have already given the concerto a more programmatic content than I can defend. Each movement ends with a cadenza and perhaps the last of those - the ending of the work that is - is inspired by a sequence from Bruce Chatwin's wonderful book 'The Viceroy of Ouidah': Or the Amazons howling. 'No, No, No. It was not the leopard that killed him. Not the buffalo that killed him. It was night. Night that killed him!'.

What does the life of a lone warrior look like? What stories does he or she have to tell? This piece for beginning band depicts a lone warrior beginning a journey across an ancient land. This solitary warrior is joined by others on the way, and together they defend those who cannot defend themselves. Each warrior might have a different story and experience, and I would encourage young musicians to create their own through sharing verbally, writing a short story, or even creating a work of art (a picture depicting their warrior or creating a mask their warrior wears might aid in the telling of their warrior’s story). The Warrior’s Path is about one minute and twenty seconds in length, and the technical range (first six notes of the Bb concert scale) should be very comfortable for a student in their second semester of instrumental music instruction. There are some articulations indicated, but overall musicians should strive for a unified even articulation. Throughout the work, the snares should be turned off or directors can choose to substitute with a low concert tom. The piece can be performed with as few as five winds (e.g. Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet and Trombone) and just four percussion (suggested Bells, Snare, Cymbal and Tambourine). The piece began as a flexible chamber piece during the summer of 2020 but has been reorchestrated for use by a full band in a traditional setting. It is my hope the piece provides a meaningful opportunity for students to tell a story through music and other creative outlets. The piece is dedicated to elementary band directors who have fought for their students and their programs each and every day. In their own way, they have been warriors of a different kind using a baton as their sword and their passion for music education and their students as a shield. Thank you in advance for your support of this music, and I wish you and your ensemble well as you take The Warrior’s Path.

In 1961, a diverse group of student activists organized a movement called Freedom Riders to challenge racial segregation in Southern states. Their strategy was to ride busses into cities with segregation laws and deliberately break them. For instance, white students would use colored only restrooms, while black students would sit at white only food counters. The hope was that, when confronted by police, the federal government would be forced to step in and defend the students' constitutional rights. On many occasions, these demonstrations were met with violent behavior from locals, including beatings and a firebombing. Ultimately, these Freedom Riders helped lead to the abolishment of segregation by bringing national attention to the injustices of segregation. While touring, the Freedom Riders would collectively perform songs with messages about freedom and justice. One participant, African -American preacher Rev. Robert Wesby, reimagined the lyrics of the hymn Woke Up this Mornin' by replacing the name Jesus with freedom in each refrain. This version of the hymn went on to become a powerful symbol of the American civil rights movement. In 1961, a diverse group of student activists organized a movement called “Freedom Riders†to challenge racial segregation in Southern states.
