Marie-Juliette Olga Lili Boulanger (21 August 1893 – 15 March 1918) was a French composer; her older sister was the noted composer and composition teacher Nadia Boulanger. As a child prodigy born in Paris, Boulanger's talent was apparent at a very young age; at the age of two, she was already singing melodies by ear. Her parents, both of whom were musicians, encouraged their daughter's musical education. In 1912, Boulanger competed in the Prix de Rome but during her performance she collapsed from illness. She returned in 1913 at the age of 19 to win the composition prize for her cantata 'Faust et Hélène', becoming the first woman to win the prize. Boulanger grew up in a time of musical transition and her music fits easily into what was becoming defined as a post-Romantic style. She finished this 'Pie Jesu' (1918) towards the end of her life, but the first of Lili Boulanger's sketches for the Pie Jesu are to be found in a composition book she used between 1909 and 1913. Scholars such as biographer Léonie Rosenstiel and Olivia Mattis speculate that Boulanger intended to write a complete Requiem Mass but did not live to complete it. This arrangement has been created from the original solo voice, string quartet, harp and organ for modern concert band as part of an ongoing project to bring more works by women into the worldwide repertoire. Published by Joseph Hasper (A0.1455063). Twelve short movements for wind ensemble by Joseph Hasper composed in 2024. Program notes: Tik, Tik, Tik, Tik, Tik, Tik the rich tapestry of harmonic possibilities across all twelve keys. Each movement is a concise musical vignette, delving into the unique character and mood of its respective key while reflecting a post-modern approach that embraces eclecticism, irony, and an intertextual dialogue with past musical traditions. This work is deeply influenced by the innovative spirit of Leonard Bernstein and Charles Ives, two iconic American composers who challenged conventional musical boundaries. Bernstein's ability to seamlessly blend diverse musical genres, from classical to jazz, resonates in the stylistic pluralism of this piece. Each movement offers a distinct musical landscape, reminiscent of Bernstein's kaleidoscopic score for West Side Story, where classical and contemporary idioms collide and coalesce into a vibrant sonic tapestry. Echoes of Charles Ives can be heard in the fragmented, juxtaposed themes and the adventurous harmonic language that defies traditional expectations. Like Ives' Three Places in New England, this composition revels in the collision of disparate musical elements, creating a rich tapestry that reflects the complexity and plurality of the modern musical landscape. Ives’ technique of layering different melodies and harmonies simultaneously is reflected in several movements where multiple key centers overlap, creating a soundscape that is at once disorienting and captivating. Tik, Tik, Tik, Tik, Tik, Tik invites listeners to experience a post-modern journey through sound, where each movement stands as an independent piece, yet contributes to a greater whole. The brevity of each segment—each capturing a distinct emotional and harmonic essence—echoes the concept of musical snapshots, offering a fleeting yet profound exploration of the vast possibilities within the twelve keys. This work is not merely a cycle through the keys, but a commentary on the diversity and potential of musical expression in the post-modern era. In A Chinese Temple Garden

John Ivor Holland #1014221. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1433990). Albert William Ketèlbey (1875-1959) was an English composer, conductor and pianist, best known for his short pieces of light orchestral music. He was born in Birmingham and moved to London in 1889 to study at Trinity College of Music. After a brilliant studentship he did not pursue the classical career predicted for him, becoming musical director of the Vaudeville Theatre before gaining fame as a composer of light music and as a conductor of his own works. One of his earliest works in the genre, 'In a Monastery Garden' (1915), sold over a million copies and brought him to widespread notice; his later musical depictions of exotic scenes caught the public imagination and established his fortune. Such works as 'In a Persian Market' (1920), 'In a Chinese Temple-Garden' (1923), and 'In the Mystic Land of Egypt' (1931) became best-sellers in print and on records; by the late 1920s he was Britain's first millionaire composer. Ketèlbey's popularity began to wane during the Second World War and his originality also declined; many of his post-war works were re-workings of older pieces and he increasingly found his music ignored by the BBC. In 1949 he moved to the Isle of Wight, where he spent his retirement, and he died at home in obscurity. On the last night of the 2009 Proms season, the orchestra performed his 'In a Monastery Garden', marking the fiftieth anniversary of Ketèlbey's death—the first time his music had been included in the festival's finale. This arrangement of 'In a Chinese Temple-Garden' has been created with the modern concert band in mind and is sensitively cross-cued for smaller ensembles. The Cross Kirk and the lang walk

Published by Hambone Music (A0.1438470). A beautiful slow melody in 4/4 followed by a rousing 6/4 trek with fanfares then returning to the slow melody in 4/4. Not overly difficult but players should be around Grade 5 (ABRSM) and intermediate level concert bands, school bands and symphonic wind ensembles should manage it easily. Inspired by an old ruined church in my town called the 'Cross Kirk' during the times of the Cromwellian invasion of Scotland.Part 1 It is around the year 1650. A novice monk awakes from his slumber to the echoes of prayers and holy chanting coming through the cloisters. After he rises, he readies the oxen for a trek down the St. Andrews Road to the nearby satellite site of the priory - the site of the modern day St Andrew's cemetery.Part 2 It is an arduous trek over a muddy, rocky, unprepared track with heavy carts, with oxen straining to pull the load. They stop for a breather (3:09) and the impressive vistas are observed and the flag at 'Auld Neidpath' is just visible, reflected in the noble theme between the arduous oxen trekking theme.Part 3 The caravan starts to speed up; the oxen being startled by the sounds of fanfare trumpets coming from behind - a brave group of knights have broken through English lines and speed towards Neidpath to reinforce the besieged occupants. As they pass the wagon train, the fanfares get louder until the party reach the head of the train where the lead Knight halts to show piety to the Hieromonk who blesses him and his knights. The novice looks on awe-inspired at the brave knights, with noble faces, resplendent in shining armour, with banners flapping in the wind. No time to stop! The knights remount and continue on, the fanfares trailing off into the distance. The wagon train slows down having reached its destination.Part 4 The novice is back at the priory, reflecting on seeing knights for the first time (receiving their blessing); their nobility and bravery impressed upon him and retires to his cell for the evening, the evening prayers and chants again echoing through the cloisters . As he closes his eyes, his mind returns to the knights and a smile crosses his face as he gently drifts off to sleep, as the final bell of the day tolls. Waltzing Throught the Mid-west is Grade 2.5-3.0. This waltz uses three official state songs for source material, Hush-a-bye Ma Baby (Missouri Waltz), Beautiful Ohio (Ohio Waltz) and the Tennessee Waltz. It has one foot in traditional entertainment aspects from Wind Band's history, and the other foot in modern choices in tempo, time signature changes (including two juxtaposed feels that will challenge even your best students), along with chordal changes that keep it from sounding 'dated.' I feature several low instruments, giving them the limelight at times and with three mallet instruments written into the score, your melodic percussion have plenty to do. This piece lays well in more than one part of your lconcert line-up, including as the feature piece.
