Published by Will Corbin (A0.1458413). Basin Street sits on the edge of the French Quarter of New Orleans. A few years before this song was written, it served as the border of a red-light district known as Storyville. A city councilman named Sidney Story came up with the idea of creating a district to which prostitution would be limited, where it could be watched and regulated. So The District was created in 1897; it soon became known as Storyville, much to the chagrin of Councilman Story. During its 20-year official life, a visitor could buy a blue book for two bits that listed prostitutes alphabetically and by race and address. It was abolished in 1917 during World War I because it violated a rule that no house of prostitution could be within 5 miles of a military base. The Navy wanted its sailors pure of heart. It's also a place where jazz grew up. The bordellos hired musicians to entertain customers, who weren't particularly interested in the music. So the mostly black performers were free to experiment, to try new syncopated rhythms, to blend the sounds of African drums and plantation gospel to come up with what would become known as Dixieland music. Storyville (it would later mostly be razed for public housing, and still later begin to gentrify as property values rose) was where Spencer Williams wrote the song in 1928; Louis Armstrong, who spent some of his childhood nearby, first recorded it in 1928. It has since been recorded by dozens of other artists. If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to accommodate. Contact me at wilcor@aol.com. You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch

Dubba C Music #1038806. Published by Dubba C Music (A0.1459850). You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch is movement two of the Grinch Suite arranged by Chris Magee. Set in a 12/8 feel, the tuba opens with a bluesy bass line, and then intro sets up the tuba as the soloist with the main melody. Trombone has improv space (optional written solo provided), and then a rousing shout chorus brings the tune back to a restatement of the melody. The Grinch Suite will be a winning addition to your holiday season programs!Trumpet 1 range is written to high D (D6).Instrumentation: 2 Bb trumpets, horn, trombone, tuba, drum set. Iko Iko

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1461185 By The Dixie Cups. By Barbara Ann Hawkins, Joan Marie Johnson, and Rosa Lee Hawkins. Arranged by Will Corbin. Jazz,Pop. 24 pages. Will Corbin #1040044. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1461185). This song has roots in a Mardi Gras chant that ostensibly came from some unspecified Native American language. James Sugar Boy Crawford turned it into a song, and his band, Sugar Boy and his Cane Cutters (southern Louisiana had a lot of that) recorded it in 1953 as Jock-a-Mo, which may mean kiss my ass or a defiant response to that effect. It was recorded again, as kind of a whim, in 1964 by the girl trio The Dixie Cups, who made it a hit. It has since been endlessly covered by everyone from Cyndi Lauper to The Grateful Dead. This arrangement is essentially solo variations on the main melody backed by horn rhythms. If you want to make it go on endlessly, it's a simple three-chord tune (actually, mostly two chords) that lends itself to simple improv. It's arranged for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba.If you require alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to help. Contact me at wilcor@aol.com. God Bless' The Child

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1460761 By Billie Holiday. By Arthur Herzog Jr. and Billie Holiday. Arranged by Will Corbin. Blues,Jazz,Pop. 20 pages. Will Corbin #1039660. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1460761). Billie Holiday first recorded this song in 1941 (and a couple more times after that, in different settings). As the story goes, it was inspired when Holiday's mother refused her a loan with the words, God bless the child that's got his own. She and frequent collaborator Arthur Herzog Jr. then put the song together in 20. Or so the story goes. Whatever the case, this classic anthem, covered by just about every singer born since then, is in the Grammy Hall of Fame. It also helped win a Grammy for Album of the Year for Blood, Sweat & Tears in 1968. They also performed it at Woodstock. This arrangement, for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba (featuring the trombonist in the role of lead BS&T singer David Clayton-Thomas), is based on their treatment of Holiday's soulful tune. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1461634). This song, published in 1955 during the warmest part of the Cold War, is a true Soviet anthem and also, after it escaped the Iron Curtain, a modern jazz standard. When composer Vasily Solovyov-Sedoi and his poet-lyrcist partner, Mikhail Matusovsky put the song together, they titled it Leningrad Nights (which today would be the very unpoetic St. Petersburg Nights. For some reason the Soviet Ministry of Culture asked them to rename it, roughly, Evenings In The Moscow Suburbs. Thankfully, the official name didn't stick. The song provided break music for a Soviet music and news station and also for Radio Moscow. I heard it performed by a small band on the steps of the Katerina Palace, the Summer Palace, outside St. Petersburg and was inspired to give it a shot when I got home. This accessible arrangement, which features a Dixieland break, is for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba. If you need other instrumentation, please contact me at wilcor@aol.com. Moonglow

Moonglow, reports Wikipedia, has been recorded no less than 572 times on its way from 1933 band theme for Will Hudson (who composed it with Irving Mills) to jazz standard. This arrangement, for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba, is adapted from a piano version from one of those Reader's Digest compilations of old favorites. This rendition actually opens with By The Light Of The Silvery Moon from composer Gus Edwards in 1909. It was part of a Broadway show called Miss Innocence which lasted almost an entire two weeks before it shut down. The tune was more durable. It was sung by the Three Stooges (!) in a 1933 film, and Doris Day sang it in a 1953 movie for which the song provided the title. If you need different instrumentation, I'm happy to accommodate. Jerry Gray, as a GI sergeant-musician during World War II, arranged it in march style for his boss, Glenn Miller, then a major and director of the Army Air Forces Orchestra. This is an adaptation of Gray's fabulous arrangement, taken down a step to put it in a friendlier key. It's arranged for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba. Warrior Musician LLC #1042394. Published by Warrior Musician LLC (A0.1463666). Duration 2:20, Brass Quintet, Grade 1.5-2.0: Here's a fun arrangement of this more modern, secular Christmas Song for Brass Quintet. It offers a great way to feature your 5 best brassers or as a transition piece. Perhaps something in the lobby as people are coming into the concert. Easily playable by most high school players or advanced junior high. It starts out timid, almost scared, like a child that doesn't want to get caught peeking, but gradually opens up into a swing style, with a toe tapping feel and a great rope at the end played by the trombone. Speaking of trombone, they get to have some glissando fun and the horn player gets to show off their rip technique. St. James Infirmary

Published by Will Corbin (A0.1463544). This song's roots go back to medieval England and may or may not refer to a hospital for lepers. Or maybe one for prostitutes. Or for young rakes with veneral disease and an addiction to alcohol. Whatever the case, it has been through many iterations, many names and many supposed composers. Louis Armstrong's 1928 recording put it permanently on the U.S. blues/jazz map. This rendition is inspired in part by a treatment by Troy Andrews, otherwise, and mostly, known as Trombone Shorty. If you need alternative instrumentation, please contact me at wilcor@aol.com.
