Regis Cunha Skye Boat Song is one of my favoryte folk songs from the British Isles. "Skye" refers to the Island of Skye, a large island off the northwest coast os Scotland. There are several texts to this song; all refer, more or less, to an uprising of Scottish dissidents against the English is 1745-46. After their defeat, they fled to the Island of Skye. The text used here by the poet Robert Louis Stevenson. Scholars attribute the first half of the melody to an old se chantey and suspect thea the second half may have benn written by Annie MacLeod.
This arrangement, featuring a solo Soprano and SSA choir with Piano accompaniment, reharmonizes the traditional folk song with a contemporary twist. This arrangement would work well for any a cappella high school, college, or community choir looking for modern arrangements of traditional folk songs.

It has been used in film and television programs and known to almost everyone in Britain. Skye (also known as “The Isle of Skyeâ€) is the largest island of the Inner Hebrides. With an area of about 640 square miles, the island is about sixty miles long and lies close to the Scottish mainland.  The boat in the song (“Speed bonny boatâ€) refers to a small sailing ship that in 1746 “carried the lad who was born to be king†to the Isle of Skye. The lad in question was Prince Charles Edward Stuart known affectionately as “Bonnie Prince Charlie.†The song also refers to the Battle of Culloden of April 1746, the last ever battle on British soil, fought between the British Army and the army of Bonnie Prince Charlie.  In June 1746 and disguised as a maid-servant, Charles was secretly transported from the Hebridean island of Benbecula to the more southerly Isle of Skye. This is the event to which the song refers. The Skye Boat Song has its roots in a traditional Gaelic melody. The lyrics in this arrangement are the familiar ones written in the 1870s by Sir Harold Edwin Boulton. This is an easy arrangement, with all vocal parts well within range and difficult leaps avoided. There are no divisi sections. The keyboard part also avoids technical hurdles. Your singers will surely enjoy this joyful melody, with its contrasting verse and attractive counter-melodies. Vocal ranges are Soprano: D4 – D5; Alto: A3 (only once) – B4; Tenor: C3 (only once) – D4. Published by St Maur Music (A0.1007139). This song is one of a series of ‘Fourteen Tolkien Songs’. A comment on the collection by an Oxford piano teacher: ‘For those who only know Tolkien via the recent blood-and-thunder films, this song-cycle by Charles McCreery will give a very different angle on the classic saga. Here we find a gentle and ethereal world, where rhythms lilt and words echo. The twelve songs, suitable for choir, evoke a dreamy, water-colour landscape with no harsh sounds, the tunes are singable and in a traditional style that Tolkien would surely have approved. Dr Julia Gasper, LGSM A general comment on Charles McCreery’s music by a violinist and composer in the USA: ‘Charles McCreery’s beautifully melodic, intricately textured compositions are infused with classical, romantic and folk idioms.’ Samantha Gillogly ‘Galadriel’s Song’ is appropriate for either women’s or children’s voices, and is potentially of interest to anyone who is familiar with the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. The three vocal parts and the piano accompaniment can each be printed out separately at the end of the full score. The MP3 which plays from this page is of an orchestral version of the song, which can be heard on the stmaurmusic channel on YouTube. On the front cover of Galadriel’s Song is a photograph of leaves in Wytham Woods, Oxford, and at the end of the score is a photograph of the sea off Treyarnon Bay, Cornwall . This is the opening number in a series of songs for children, with words by J.R.R. Tolkien. The song is written for voices in two and three parts in verses 2 and 3, but can be sung by a choir in unison throughout if preferred, as the tune is always present in one part (usually the top line). ‘Charles McCreerys beautifully melodic, intricately textured compositions are infused with classical, romantic and folk idioms.’ - Samantha Gillogly, violinist A comment on Charles McCreery’s collection of Tolkien songs: ‘For those who only know Tolkien via the recent blood-and-thunder films, this song-cycle by Charles McCreery will give a very different angle on the classic saga. Joanna Mills Music #5197817. Published by Joanna Mills Music (A0.781371). This charming 3-Part choir arrangement is a quodlibet of three traditional songs about rain: Rain, Rain, Go Away; It's Raining, It's Pouring; and Pitter Patter Raindrops. It begins with a sparse staccato section which builds quickly to emulate the start of a rain shower, and then each song is added one after another until all three songs are sung at the same time. Then the rain sounds begin again until the rain shower ends with one final Drop. The piano score is simple and supports the singers, and because the song is in the key of F, Orff instruments can easily be added (or replace the piano entirely). Suitable for elementary aged students (range E4-D5), and perfect for a fall (autumn), spring, or early summer concert, or classroom instruction. Approximate performance time 1:40. Piano accompaniment mp3 also available on SMP (S0.706401)Joanna Mills was the Gospel Choir Director at Roncesvalles United Church in Toronto, Canada for 20 years, and has been writing and arranging choral music for 15 years. Her compositions and arrangements are performed regularly by her own choir and others around the world and have won awards in songwriting competitions.
