Contents: Praeludium, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Menuet I, Menuet II, Gigue. Johann Sebastian Bach's Partita No. 1 in B-flat Major, BWV 825, is a highly significant and influential work for several reasons: It is part of Bach's monumental Clavier-Übung (Keyboard Practice), a collection of some of his greatest keyboard works published in 1731. The Partitas were groundbreaking compositions demonstrating Bach's mastery of counterpoint, harmony, and keyboard technique. Bach referred to the Partitas as his Opus 1, indicating their importance as his first major published keyboard work aimed at refreshing the spirits of music lovers. The Partita No. 1 was the first of the set, published in 1726 and dedicated to a newborn prince. The work expanded the traditional Baroque Partita form by adding a Prelude and two Minuets, showcasing Bach's innovative compositional approach. Each dance movement is a masterful example of its style, from the virtuosic Praeludium and Gigue to the expressive Sarabande. It profoundly influenced subsequent composers and established Bach as a keyboard music pioneer. The Partitas' technical demands and musical depth set new standards for the genre. So, Bach's Partita No. 1 is a seminal work that exemplifies his genius as a composer, innovator, and keyboard master, making it one of the most important compositions in the Baroque era and the history of Western music. 5 Famous Songs by Bach for Clarinet Quartet

Baroque,Easter,Renaissance,Sacred,Wedding. 44 pages. Woods Only, Arrangements #738108. Published by Woods Only, Arrangements (A0.1137849). This album contains 5 of Johann Sebastian Bach's most famous and versatile pieces for clarinet quartet, all very well suited for the beginners who want to get to know the baroque repertoire. They are also suitable for performances at events such as: weddings, Christian and church ceremonies, Easter, and academic recitals or concerts. They can be used in music institutions and by teachers as repertoire material and study methods, either for performance or instrumental technique. This collection includes a totally free bonus for you to enjoy: Martin Luther's A Mighty Fortress is Our God, a Renaissance sacred song for choir, which has been adapted for this set. 1: Air on the G String - The original piece is part of Johann Sebastian Bach's Suite No. 3 for orchestra, in D Major, BWV 1068, written for Prince Leopold of Anhalt. The so-called Air on the G String dates from one of these latter employments. In the service of the Prince of Cöthen, Bach composed not only the famous Brandenburg Concertos, but also several orchestral suites, from the third of which comes the Air on the G String. This curious title derives from a later arrangement of this piece for violin solo, in which the melody is played entirely on the lower, higher string of the instrument. 2: Arioso - The Cantata 156 (BWV 156) was written for the third Sunday after Epiphany in 1729, and was first performed on January 23 of that year. The text is by Picander, one of Bach's favorite librettists. Of the four cantatas written by Bach for the feast, it was the last and only one scored for solo voice. This is a choral cantata, employing a choral melody in several movements. Cantata 156, in fact, employs two different choral melodies and texts in the second and sixth movements. A cantata is a sung symphony consisting of several parts, one of which is the Arioso, which is the initial instrumental part. 3: Jesu, joy of man's desiring - This is one of Bach's most beautiful cantatas, made famous by the Jesus the Joy of Men chorus. It was originally composed for Advent 1716 in Weimar. Years later, already in Leipzig, Advent was tempus clausum, there was no music in the churches. Bach then reworked it for the Feast of Mary's Visitation. It is the final chorale of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Although it is the 32nd cantata composed by Bach, of those that have survived, it was given BWV 147 in the complete catalog of his works. 4: O Jesulein süss, o Jesulein mild - The Jesulein süß, the Jesulein mild is an original traditional German choral melody for voice and continuous bass arranged by Johann Sebastian Bach around 1735. With lyrics by Valentin Thilo, O Jesulein süss is a sacred melody adapted and catalogued as BWV 493. The first translation is by Dirk van Hogendorp, who made it more of a song for the time of suffering. 5: Minuet in G major - This famous piece has traditionally been attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, as it appears in the Notebook for Anna Magdalena , a notebook that Bach gave to his wife Anna Magdalena in 1725 and which was to be filled with the favorite selections of Bach family members. However, recent research has concluded that this minuet, sometimes referred to as BWV Anhang 114. was probably composed by Christian Petzold, a German composer and organist contemporary with Bach. Bonus: A Mighty Fortress is Our God, by Martin Luther - Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott is a hymn written by Martin Luther probably before 1529. The melody was also considered his work for a long time, but it was created at least with the collaboration of Johann Walter. The song is of great symbolic power for Protestantism, where it is also known as Deus noster refugium et virtus. Considered one of the most important hymns in the history of Christianity, it was considered by the Christian poet Johann Heirich Heine (1797-1856) to be the Marseillaise of the Reformation, in an allusion to the French national anthem. BACH: Partita No. 3 BWV 827 Contents: Fantasia, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Burlesca, Scherzo, Gigue. Bach's Partita No. 3 in A minor, BWV 827, is an essential work in the composer's output for keyboard instruments. Here are some key points about this piece: It is one of the six partitas that Bach composed for harpsichord or clavichord, regarded as pinnacles of Baroque keyboard music. The Partita No. 3 consists of seven movements following the traditional partita structure: Allemande, Corrente, Sarabande, Burlesca, Scherzo, Gigue. The Burlesca movement is particularly notable, featuring rapid hand-crossing and a lively, humorous character unusual for Bach's works. The Sarabande movement is considered one of Bach's most profound and expressive, with its rich harmonies and emotional depth. The final Gigue is a tour de force of contrapuntal writing, with multiple melodic lines interwoven in a lively dance rhythm. With the other partitas, BWV 827 demonstrates Bach's mastery of various dance forms and his ability to elevate them into profound artistic statements. So, in summary, Bach's Partita No. 3 stands out for its structural complexity, emotional range, and virtuosic demands, cementing its place among the composer's most outstanding keyboard achievements. BACH: Partita No. 4 BWV 828 Contents: Overture, Allemande, Courante, Aria, Sarabande, Menuet, Gigue. Bach's Partita No. 4 in D major, BWV 828, is an essential work for several reasons: It is part of Bach's Clavier-Übung I, a collection of keyboard suites that he published in the last 25 years of his life as a musical testament to convey his vision of music-making and composing. Unlike his earlier English and French suites, the Partitas in this collection are more severe, focusing on polyphonic structures that actively involve both the listener and performer. The Partita consists of seven movements, all in the key of D major, structured around Renaissance dance forms such as the allemande, courante, sarabande, minuet, and gigue. This instrumentation captures both the original medium for these dance sets as well as the Baroque style of Bach. Bach was well aware of his abilities as a composer, and he deliberately published these works with future generations in mind. The Partitas represent Bach's mature approach to keyboard composition, where he was less interested in dance rhythms and more focused on creating complex polyphonic structures. Overall, Partita No. 4 is an essential work in Bach's keyboard oeuvre, as it showcases his mastery of form and counterpoint while also reflecting his desire to create music that would endure. Duration: ca. 4:00, Score: 10 pages, Program this for church services during the Easter season, weddings, or as a recital encore. Instrumentation: 2 Bb clarinets, 1 alto clarinet, 1 bass clarinet.Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as: Sleepers Awake Bach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire annual church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera. Fourth Movement Bach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). This transcription became No. 1 of the Six Schübler Chorales. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with the instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio. History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer. Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbrevia. Bach: Partita No. 2 BWV 826 for Clarinet Quartet

BACH: Partita No. 2 BWV 826 Contents: Sinfonia, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Rondeau, Capriccio. Bach's Partita No. 2 in C minor, BWV 826, is an essential work for several reasons: Significance in Bach's Oeuvre It is part of Bach's monumental collection of six partitas (suites) for the keyboard, considered among music history's most famous and challenging suites. The partitas were published as Bach's Opus 1 in 1731, showcasing the diversity of forms and ingenious counterpoint in his keyboard writing. Partita No. 2 was one of the earliest partitas to be published individually in 1727, highlighting its significance. Musical Characteristics It opens with a grand Sinfonia movement akin to a French overture, followed by an expressive Andante aria-like movement. The fugue movement has an intense subject spanning a minor 9th interval. It includes a double (ornamented variation) of the traditional Sarabande dance movement. The final Capriccio movement is a virtuosic and contrapuntal concerto-like piece testing the performer's technical prowess. Overall, the partita exhibits a weighty, substantial, and momentous character compared to the first. Influence and Legacy It expanded keyboard suites' technical and musical boundaries and other partitas. Due to its artistic merit and challenges, it has remained a pinnacle of the keyboard repertoire, studied and performed by generations of musicians. In summary, Bach's Partita No. 2 is a significant work that exemplifies the composer's mastery of counterpoint, variation forms, and virtuosic keyboard writing, solidifying the partitas' enduring importance in the canon of Western classical music. BACH: Partita No. 6 BWV 830 Contents: Toccata, Allemande, Courante, Air, Sarabande, Gavotta, Gigue. The Partita No. 6 is the last and most complex of Bach's six partitas published as part of his Clavier-Übung I. It is considered Bach's greatest suite and the crowning work of the set, featuring some of the most dramatic and ambitious writing in his keyboard repertoire. The partita consists of seven movements, all in the key of E minor. It opens with a lengthy and virtuosic toccata-like movement, followed by an allemande, corrente, sarabande, tempo di gavotta, gigue, and an air. The sarabande movement is renowned, described as a pure lamento and perhaps the most intensely expressive piece in all of Bach's works for harpsichord. The final gigue movement returns to the very origins of the French suite itself with an archaic yet modern style. Overall, Partita No. 6 is the pinnacle of Bach's keyboard suite compositions, showcasing his mastery of counterpoint, virtuosity, and emotional expression. BACH: Partita No. 5 BWV 829 Contents: Praeambulum, Allemande, Courante, Aria, Sarabande, Menuet, Passepied, Gigue. Bach's Partita No. 5 in G major, BWV 829, is an essential work for several reasons: The Partitas, including BWV 829, were among the last keyboard suites composed by Bach and are his most technically demanding. They were published individually starting in 1726, then collected together as Clavier-Übung I in 1731, the first of Bach's works published under his direction. Partita No. 5 in G major, BWV 829, is particularly notable for its free-ranging structure, unlike the strictly organized English and French Suites. Additionally, the tonalities of the six Partitas form a deliberate sequence of intervals going up and down, with Partita No. 5 in G major completing this tonal scheme. This intervallic sequencing suggests Bach carefully structured the collection as a cohesive whole. Finally, Partita No. 5 is considered an exercise in spiritual delight for its technical demands and expressive qualities. It is one of the repertoire's most famous and challenging keyboard suites. In Bach's own words ..... for the profit and use of musical youth desirous of learning, and especially for the pastime of those already skilled in this study....., we are literally invited by the great man himself, to enjoy playing his music in virtually any combination we like! The Clarinet Quartet is a fitting vehicle for these two pieces from The Well-Tempered Clavier Book 2, namely the Prelude No.1 and the Fugue No.22. The Prelude Completely different from the Prelude that opens Book 1, which is mainly broken chords, this opening Prelude to Book 2 features a continuously flowing sequence of melodic ideas. According to Levinson, ...few pieces of traditional music are more purely processive as this. It develops without a break or pause, without arrivals of significance, from beginning to end.... Good to play as well!! The Fugue The key of Bb Minor is a challenging mode for the Clarinet, coupled with the time signature of 3/2, this Fugue should prove interesting in rehearsal! The four voices are distributed throughout the parts, and at 101 bars, it is certainly one of Bach's longest, and definitely one of the most enjoyable to play, especially in a generous acoustic. Also available here in Wind Quartet and Saxophone Quartet flavours!!
