Cello,Piano - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.550915 Composed by J. S. Bach - Gounod. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas,Contemporary,Easter,Wedding. Score and part. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #4888259. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.550915). This arrangement features the controversial Schwencke measure (ms. 27) that was originally introduced in 1783 by Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke. The convenient 1st & 2nd endings provide an option for extended performance. Duration with repeat - 4:50. Score: 7 pages. Solo part: 1 page, piano part: 4 pages. Based on Prelude #1 in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1. Well suited for church meditations or school programs or recital encores. Ave Maria Ave Maria is a Catholic prayer that consequently asks for the mother of Jesus (Mary) to intercede. Charles Gounod composed a famous version of the Ave Maria. He was a French Romantic composer who overlaid a new melody on an existing Bach chord progression. The progression is from Bach’s Prelude No. 1 from Well-Tempered Clavier I. This version, as well as Schubert’s version, have become essential items at weddings, masses, and funerals. Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy, though, are the St. John Passion, and certainly the Christmas Oratorio.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as a court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created an engaging new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV.  Voyager NASA launched two Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Onboard are phonograph records with sounds, music, and images of life on Earth. The purpose of the launch was to inform intelligent extraterrestrial life forms about conditions on Earth. The music on the disc is varied. There is Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Stravinsky among others. However, because Bach is so important in our music history, it contains three times more Bach than all the others combined. Practising Etudes

Digital Studies play an important role in musical instrument training. Gerhard Mantel's new edition 'Etuden uben' [Practising studies] (3 volumes) complements his previous successful book 'Cello uben' (ED 8714). The basics of cello technique are worked on in selected studies, with the focus being not only on the ability to learn a technically and musically oriented text within a reasonable time but also on the solution of certain problems typical of the cello. Vol. 1 covers aspects ranging from the orientation on the fingerboard via changes of position, vibrato and trills to changes of strings and double stops. Vol. 2 deals with fingerings, whole-bow stroke, dynamics, articulation and types of bowing, among others. The final volume contains studies on legato, arpeggios, chords, martellato, staccato, spiccato and changes of rhythm. The accompanying volume of commentaries (for all three volumes) describes in detail the methodological practising processes. Easy Cello Solos - Student Edition

Cello Solo - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.812889 Composed by Adrianus Valerius, Folklore, Folliott S. Pierpoint, Franz Lehar, Franz Schubert, Franz Xaver Gruber, Johannes Brahms, John Newton, and Traditional. Arranged by Yellow Cello Music. Celtic,Christian,Folk,Romantic Period,Standards. Individual part. 27 pages. Sheryl Smith #4981963. Published by Sheryl Smith (A0.812889). Includes 15 songs for the beginner cellist. Specially created for students using Suzuki and similar methods. For students who play in first position only, and for those beginning to learn shifting. What makes this book special? It includes:1. Pieces in the low register of the cello. Beginner books often focus on the A and D strings. 2. More lyrical pieces, meaning more song-like, more Romantic than Baroque style. 3. A teacher accompaniment part (teacher edition only). The students find it enjoyable, and it teaches them how important it is to listen and to play in time, in tune, and with dynamics. Can also be used for recitals.4. Familiar tunes. What is familiar to one person is unknown to others, but I tried to put in pieces that many people would be familiar with.5. Shifting with familiar tunes. When I was a student, I found it easier to learn a shift if the piece was familiar. My ear knew where to go. I have included a few pieces with two versions: first position and shifting . The student can learn the first position version and then be able to learn shifting with a familiar tune.6. There is plenty of empty space on the pages for teachers to add markings.7. Created by a cello teacher for cellists. Not adapted from another instrument. Tested by real students. Russian Air with Twenty Variations for Cello Solo with a Second Cello, Op. 32

Cello Duet Cello - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1156756 Composed by Johann Justus Friedrich Dotzauer. Arranged by Michele Galvagno. 19th Century,Chamber,Instructional,Romantic Period,Traditional. Score. 44 pages. Artistic Score Engraving di Galvagno Michele #757087. Published by Artistic Score Engraving di Galvagno Michele (A0.1156756). The Russian Air with Twenty Variations for Cello Solo, accompanied by a Second Cello, Op. 32, by J. J. F. Dotzauer (1783—1860), was composed and published around 1815. It is one of the many set of variations written upon the theme “Їхав козак за Дунай†(“The Cossack rode beyond the Danubeâ€) during the second decade of the XIX century, others including those by Beethoven and Hummel. Despite the title, the theme is of Ukrainian origin but, at the time of its diffusion in Europe, under a German disguise, the region that is now Ukraine was part of the Russian Empire. The language of the text makes its origin unmistakable today. After a fascinating slow Introduction, the theme comes and is followed by twenty variations, most of which requiring great virtuosity. This is a concert piece, lasting anywhere between 14 and 24 minutes according to whether repeats will be played or not. An outstanding variety of techniques is employed, making this a true challenge for even the most gifted players. This edition is based on the oldest surviving source, the first edition by Friedrich Hofmeister. It corrects the most glaring mistakes, and adds notes where ambiguity arises. This edition is dedicated to Yuriy Leonovich. O Come All Ye Faithful for Cello & Piano

Cello,Piano - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548509 Composed by Wade. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christian,Christmas. Score and part. 4 pages. Jmsgu3 #3388103. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548509). O Come All Ye Faithful arranged with new harmony for the final verse. Score: 3 pages, part: 1 page. O Come, All Ye Faithful O Come, All Ye Faithful is an English translation of the Latin Christmas carol Adeste Fideles. No one knows exactly who wrote it, but one theory is that it was originally composed by King John IV of Portugal (1604–1656) and revised by John F. Wade and John Reading. Nowadays, we usually attribute it to John Wade. The oldest manuscript from 1751, is owned by Stonyhurst College in Lancashire. Lyrics The English translation O Come, All Ye Faithful was certainly written by Frederick Oakeley, a Catholic priest in 1841. This translation is the most common in English speaking states. To begin with, the hymn had only four verses. Later, the verses grew to eight. Often, various verses are omitted because otherwise, the song is just too long. Some believe the first Latin lyrics were written by St. Bonaventure (13th century) or King John IV of Portugal in the 17th. Though others think it was written by the Cistercian monks. King John IV King John IV of Portugal was called The Musician King. He became king in 1640. In addition to performing the duties of a king, he was also a composer and music journalist. King John built a very large music library. Unfortunately, the library was ruined in 1755 because of the massive earthquake of Lisbon. In addition to his library, the king started a Music School that produced many accomplished musicians. The king also worked diligently to get instrumental music approved by the Vatican for use in his churches. Aside from his authorship of Adeste Fideles, he is famous for another popular choral setting of the Crux Fidelis, a prevalent Lenten hymn. Performance in Context As mentioned above, verses are sometimes left out because all eight verses would take too long to perform. More to the point though, some of the verses may be unsuitable for whatever of the church calendar they are intended. The eighth verse deals with the Epiphany, so it makes sense to sing this on Epiphany Sunday, but not other Sundays. Similarly, other verses are used according to whether the event is Midnight Mass or regular daytime Mass. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions. Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia.LegacyGrieg is celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen.Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46)Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain.Holberg Suite and Misc. SummaryIt must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life. Grieg: Ase's Death from Peer Gynt Suite for Cello & Piano

Super-famous instantly recognizable tune, not very difficult - suitable for a recital, funeral or church meditation.Grieg Background In the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia. Legacy Grieg is especially celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen. Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46) Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain. Holberg Suite and Misc. Summary It must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life.Register for free lifetime revisions and updates at www.jamesguthrie.com O Holy Night - cello and piano

The Finnish word ‘Marraskuu’ means ‘November’; furthermore, ‘marras’ means sth. like ‘dull, dead, waste’. Marraskuu is a homage to one of my favourite seasons, so the title should not mislead to primarily dark and gloomy associations. Completed in November 1998 in Helsinki, the piano trio was premiered by the Trio Présence (E. Windrich, G. Waterhouse, M. Wendeberg) in November 1999 and thoroughly revised in Paris in November 2004. The less clear expression and one-dimensional developments will be found, the more the listener’s attention will be sharpened to small details: melody fragments, some virtuoso textures, and Kondukt-like passages. Moreover, the composition involves a certain degree of freedom and sleaziness, which is, among others, the result of sections enabling the players to choose their entries in a certain time frame. That’s where the detailed precision of the notation offers some kind of counterweight, holding players off a too ‘educated’ performance. Scriabin: Prelude, Op. 51, No. 2 for Cello & Harp

The historical context of Scriabin's Prelude, Op. 51 No. 2 is rooted in the broader tradition of preludes as improvisatory pieces that precede performances on keyboard instruments. Scriabin's composition, part of his Quatre Morceaux (Four Pieces) Op. 51, published in 1906, reflects his innovative approach to piano music within the musical landscape of the early 20th century. This piece, along with others by Scriabin, demonstrates a blend of traditional influences and his quest to develop a distinctive and original style in his compositions. The meaning behind Scriabin's Prelude, Op. 51 No. 2 is characterized by its emotional depth and expressive qualities, reflecting the composer's unique musical language and style. This piece, along with others by Scriabin, delves into themes of fatigue, exhaustion, eternity, and millions of years, as described by the composer. In this prelude, Scriabin's use of dissonance, tonal centers, and harmonic language conveys a sense of obsessively seeking out pain or grief. The composition captures a range of emotions, from fatigue to a cry in the night, showcasing Scriabin's ability to evoke intense feelings through his music.
