String Ensemble,String Quintet Viola - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.813430 Composed by Johann Pachelbel. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. Baroque,Concert,Standards,Wedding,World. Score and parts. 26 pages. Regis Bookshar #6259505. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.813430). Canon (Pachelbel) (Bb) (Viola Quintet) - Advanced/Intermediate - Digital Download. This selection, Johann Pachelbel's celebrated Canon, is perhaps the most famous canon ever written and has been one of my favorite compositions to arrange. A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for a Viola Quintet. Three Violas play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the other two Violas. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but could also be performed by professional performers. It is perfect for concerts and church services, especially for Weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (26 pages). This version is written in the key of Bb Major, but, if you prefer, another version, written in the key of D Major, is also available. Other versions of Pachelbel's Canon have also been arranged by Regis Bookshar and are available for a wide variety of instrumental Quintets and Octets, in both the keys of D Major and Bb Major. I think that String players would probably prefer to play the versions in the key of D Major while the Brass and Woodwind musicians might prefer to play the Bb Major versions. I hope you take the time to compare the different versions to find the right version for you. To help you decide which version, or versions, you may want to choose, I have included several musical samples for you to listen to and to hear what these arrangements may sound like and so that you may compare the various arrangements. Also, just to let you know, the Octets written in the key of Bb Major have full-length recordings while the Octets in D Major and all Quintets have only the first 25 measures, or so, available to hear. Please feel free to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar which are also available. There are quite a few other arrangements in a variety of styles and I'm certain you will find something else which might interest you as well. Please keep checking because I plan to continue to add new arrangements as often as I can. I'm certain that this exciting arrangement of Pachelbel's Canon will be a challenge to some performers but will continue to entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come. Piano,Viola - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.632644 By Jermaine Paul. By Robert Kelly. Arranged by Fishel Pustilnik. R & B. Score and part. 8 pages. F & N Enterprise #3071839. Published by F & N Enterprise (A0.632644). An excellent arrangement of famous I Believe I Can Fly for Viola and Piano (Jazz/Pop Version). The composition is easy to read, fun to play and sound professional when performed. Arranged by Fishel Pustilnik, very well known as Composer/Publisher. His books Jazz & Pop Piano Paradise (Volumes 1-5) have become a commercial success and a hit with music teachers and students in Canada. (Thousands books already sold in Canada). They are also starting to enter the US, Brazil, Norway, Russia, Holland, Israel, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Greece, Latvia and UK markets. This is a wonderful new publication. These pieces offer much appeal for the young pianist and excellent choice for a supplementary book for students from Grade 3 to 8. Lore Ruschiensky, Editor, (from review in The Canadian Music Teacher) Yesterday I spent at least two pleasure filled hours playing through your imaginatively inventive compositions. Congratulations! I trust students will decide to program your well crafted and entertaining works on recitals and examinations. Review from Dr. Jack Behrens, B.Sc. (Julliard), PH.D (Harvard), Director of Academic Studies, The Glenn Gould School I liked this book the best so far. Great work! You have a gift for melody and your arrangements are very playable. Congratulations on the 3rd Volume. Mark Carlstein, Hal Leonard, Keyboard Publications. Fugue: "Wear Pearls and Smile" (A Pairing with Beethoven's Symphony #2) - Viola

Viola Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1018938 Composed by Benjamin Harry Sajo. 20th Century,Contemporary. Individual part. 5 pages. Benjamin Sajo #6072979. Published by Benjamin Sajo (A0.1018938). Fugue: Wear Pearls and Smile is, on the outset, a fast, rambunctious adventure for many voices playing at the same time. It was conceived as a pairing for the equally vivacious second symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven–his 250th birthday is this year–but can stand on its own as one of my hardest, most challenging works to cook up.This piece is dedicated to those forced to appear positive when internally they’re falling apart. The title is inspired by a quote that’s been with me for a while, Why is it that men can be bastards and women must wear pearls and smile? by Lynn Hecht Schafren, the celebrated American jurist famous for campaigning for gender equity in courts. I’m taking the quote out of its initial context, but the power of that quote, for me, exemplifies how hard it is to maintain a sense of emotional decorum and dignity when you’re authentically a hot mess. And what’s more of a musical hot mess than a fugue? There are two realities to this piece. I’ll quote Dmitri Shostakovich, from his autobiography: The rejoicing is forced, created under threat, […] It’s as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, ‘Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing,’ and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering ‘Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing.’ On the one hand, it is insincere happiness, cloying perhaps. But the other truth, I’ll quote Oscar Hammerstein II, from The King and I: While shivering in my shoes / I strike a careless pose / And whistle a happy tune / And no one ever knows, / I'm afraid. I forced myself, against all impulses of my current being, to forge happiness. This piece, with its origin being a mental puzzle (fugues are puzzles), it became a construct where I could lift myself up and regain a sense of purpose. Therefore, it is invented–out of a literal need to survive–pure, genuine happiness.Future Performances: If you are interested in performing this work, please e-mail me.ABOUT THE COMPOSER: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. The chorus of birds, one species after another, unite in a wild and genuine polyphony while the dew and mist evaporate upon the rising of the sun, encouraging goosebumps and shivers from an open window, tempered or exhilarated by a cup of coffee. Have you ever actively witnessed the sun’s sultry and intense ascension from the cradle of the horizon? That is what this piece, Aubade, or Dawn Song, is about. An aubade is the twin of a night-time serenade; an aubade is a love song originating amongst the medieval Provençal troubadours, depicting the morning departure between two lovers. An aubade is a song in honor of the slow cosmic percolation of a late summer morning. On a personal level, the composer is reminded of his own experiences camping in Northern Canada as a young man–a simpler and less demanding time. This piece formally begins the series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies–his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!–though they can all stand on their own on any program. The connection, in this case, is with his first symphony; I envisioned, once my piece concludes, his beautiful drawn-out chords presenting themselves–the dawn of his special genius.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. ISBN 9781513473901. 8.75X11.76 inches.Practicing scales is essential to building and maintaining strength, technique, tone, and agility on the viola, but it is easy to slip into the habit of playing scales automatically, without paying attention to tonality or sound production. The 29 single-page studies in this book focus the attention of violists on the beauty of sound, with a particular concern for the way different keys resonate on the viola. The first 24 studies address all minor and relative major keys and proceed through the circle of fifths; the last 5 pieces are individually conceived, i.e., apart from the circle of fifths. No metronome indications are given, so the etudes can be played at individually comfortable tempos. The names of the etudes refer to various animals that have scales, including insects, fish, birds, reptiles, and a few species of mammals. The author hopes that in addition to experiencing more enjoyable scale practice, students will be inspired to learn more about these amazing creatures and write scale studies of their own.Song List :

Simple Gifts ('Tis the Gift to Be Simple), an American Shaker Song, written in 1848 and attributed to Elder Joseph Brackett, Jr. of Alfred, Maine, would be a great addition to any music library. The song was largely unknown outside Shaker communities until Aaron Copland used its melody for the score of Martha Graham's ballet, Appalachian Spring, first performed in 1944. Simple Gifts has now been arranged for a Viola Quintet by Regis Bookshar. It is suitable for high school and college students, and, depending upon their ability, even elementary school students. Professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. It could be performed for concerts and church services. The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble has often performed it for Weddings. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (11 pages). In addition to this arrangement of Simple Gifts for a Viola Quintet, other arrangements of this tune are also available. There are Quintets and Octets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please feel free to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar as well, as there are numerous arrangements in a variety of styles, also available for purchase. You may find something else which might also interest you. Please continue to check periodically because I continue to add new arrangements as often as I can. Piano,Viola - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1228636 Composed by Joseph P. Holbrook. Arranged by Hyrum Kohler. Christian,Easter,Praise & Worship,Religious,Sacred. Score and part. 8 pages. Hyrum Kohler #824692. Published by Hyrum Kohler (A0.1228636). I wanted to play a hymn in church without simply playing the same thing three times in a row. And, without words, I wanted to express the tension and pain that occasionally and inevitably accompanies trying one's best to live a good life. This arrangement is simultaneously fresh, familiar, and reasonably challenging for the performer. This is my go-to for playing in a church setting, but it can also fit right in to a pedagogical or classical recital scenario. The traditional tune wears different clothes throughout the piece, having variance in time signature, key signature, and mode (dipping into minor). This is a simplification and compression of my original arrangment for string quartet. I originally intended this to be for viola, but it just so happened to fit in the violin's range; I left the part in treble clef to accommodate both options. The piano part is somewhat easier to play than the violin/viola part (evidenced by how I can kind of play it), but it still serves a collaborative or duet role, sharing and passing the melody betwen parts.
