Flavio Regis Cunha This is a beautiful arrangement for Soprano Saxophone with piano accompaniment. The piano does not act simply as an accompanying instrument, but performs solo parts in this much-loved hymn. This arrangement can be used in services, during preludes or postludes, weddings and other liturgical situations. For an intermediate-advanced level.

Solo part: 1 pg. Piano part: 3 pg. Performance: Level: Early intermediate and up. One of his most popular and widely recognized works, it is the only movement from the Carnival Suite that Saint-Saens permitted to be performed in public during his lifetime. This is an excellent recital encore choice to demonstrate melodic playing and strategic phrasing. The Carnival of the Animals The Carnival of the Animals is an entertaining musical suite of fourteen movements by Camille Saint-Saëns. The work was composed for private performance by an ensemble of two pianos and solo instruments. The Swan (No. 13) is one of the most popular of the fourteen movements. In its entirety, it lasts about 25 minutes. Saint-Saëns Background Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns (1835 – 1921) was, by all means, in particular, a famous French composer, brilliant organist, and significant musical mastermind of the Romantic era. Indeed, his most famous compositions, in the long run, including his Piano Concerto No. 2 (1868), Cello Concerto No. 1 (1872), and the Danse macabre (1874). Notwithstanding, we must also add Violin Concerto No. 3 (1880), Symphony No. 3 (the Organ Symphony, 1886), it must be remembered, Carnival of the Animals (1886) to the list. Childhood It is important to realize that Saint-Saëns was certainly, in fact, a child musical prodigy. Consequently, with this in mind, he made his concert debut albeit at ten years old. Another key point to remember is that he expressly studied at the Paris Conservatoire, then in spite of reality conversely followed a traditional career path as a church organist. Nevertheless, twenty years later, on the other hand, he left to become a successful freelance pianist and composer despite, as has been noted, his former employment situation. Furthermore, his performances were after all markedly in demand - not only in Europe but above all in the Americas all in all as well. Youth A point often overlooked is that in his youth, Saint-Saëns was certainly excited about the modern music of the day. He was in essence fond of the music of his contemporaries, in particular, Schumann, Liszt, and for the most part Wagner. In contrast, however, his own compositions seemed in fact largely confined within the conservative classical tradition. Be that as it may, he was at the same time nevertheless, in fact, a scholar of musical history. Criticism On the whole, his conservatism in fact ultimately brought him into frequent conflict in his later years with composers of the impressionist and in particular the dodecaphonic schools of musical thought.  A point often overlooked is that he included neoclassical elements in his music contrary to some critics. Furthermore, in so doing he provided the most compelling evidence that he predicted the techniques and works by Stravinsky and Les Six. To put it another way, given these points, he was regarded, perhaps for the most part unfairly so, as a non-progressive reactionary henceforth around the time of his passing. Legacy To sum up, Saint-Saëns taught for a short time in Paris, where his students included namely Gabriel Fauré. To clarify, Maurice Ravel later studied with Fauré. In conclusion, both Ravel and Fauré were powerfully influenced by Saint-Saëns, whom they respected as a musical mastermind. Saint-Saëns: The Swan for Soprano Sax & Piano

Score and part. 5 pages. David McKeown #4810591. Published by David McKeown (A0.587704). Pie Jesus is the fifth and central movement of Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem. The piece was premiered in Paris in 1888, and underwent several revisions in subsequent years. The Requiem was performed at Fauré’s own funeral in 1924, but it’s only in recent years that this gentle version of the Mass for the Dead has received the international recognition it deserves. Contemporary performances in Parisian churches required the Pie Jesus to be sung by a boy treble, but in the concert hall, Fauré always preferred a soprano voice for the part. This arrangement transcribes the orchestral score as a Solo for Soprano Saxophone with Piano accompaniment. Both the piano score and the solo part are included in the pdf file. The linked youtube performance is the clarinet version of this arrangement.Soloists at an early intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The rhythms are straightforward, and there is plenty of scope for expressive, lyrical playing. The slow tempo though will require good breath and tone control. The piano part is suitable for an intermediate player. The overall performance time is around three and a half minutes. There are many more top quality arrangements and compositions by David McKeown for you to browse at http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/publishers/david-mckeown/6203. Vincenzo Palermo's Sonata for saxophone and piano uses the soprano and alto saxophone and is in one movement only. As in other pieces by the Neapolitan composer, elements of minimalist writing are combined with a wise and elegant reinterpretation of the classical language, which produces an evident and controlled narrative dimension of the piece. Against the light we also hear echoes of french music, which are inevitably linked to the sonic imagery of the classical saxophone. From this the sonata takes part of the harmonic dimension, so essential but colorful, which is perfectly suited to the clear character (which is rare in the contemporary repertoire!) of this piece.SCORE and PARTS available. Published by Whole Tone Press (A0.774080). Expertly arranged for soprano sax and piano, this work, based on the well-known hymn, ST. FLAVIAN, captures the somber mood of the forty-day journey through the Lenten season. Following the opening march-like fanfare, the familiar melody enters in the sax above the drone in the piano. Then the melody is transferred to the piano (bass clef), transposing it to F Dorian, then, briefly to G Mixolydian. At the key change, the melody returns to its original form, taken up again by the sax. The opening fanfare returns in an abbreviated form in the coda as the piece ends quietly on a Dmaj9 arpeggio. Particularly appropriate for Lenten services, this short work can be played during the prelude, the offering, or as a meditation during communion.Anthony Giamanco is a member of ASCAP. Super-famous instantly recognizable tune, not very difficult - suitable for a recital, funeral or church meditation. Grieg Background In the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions. Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia. Legacy Grieg is especially celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen. Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46) Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain. Holberg Suite and Misc. Summary It must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life. Register for free lifetime revisions and updates at www.jamesguthrie.com. Claude Debussy is renowned for his contributions to the Impressionist movement in music, aiming to capture atmospheres and sensations through colorful harmonies and evocative textures. Clair de Lune stands as one of his most emblematic works, embodying the artistic expression of Impressionism in music. Clair de Lune is the third piece in the Suite Bergamasque, originally composed for solo piano. It is famous for its delicacy and ethereal atmosphere, evoking the serene and mysterious beauty of moonlight. The music suggests quiet and contemplative nights, with its delicate figures and flowing melodies. Debussy's rich harmony and subtle tonal shifts reflect his influence from Symbolism and contemporary Impressionist painting. In this version, the composition was arranged for Soprano Saxophone and Piano by Harry Walker.
