Diamond S Music Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13 - Beethoven, commonly known as Sonata Pathétique, was written in 1798 when the composer was 27 years old, and was published in 1799. It has remained one of his most celebrated compositions. Although commonly thought to be one of the few works to be named by the composer himself, it was actually named Grande sonate pathétique (to Beethoven's liking) by the publisher, who was impressed by the sonata's tragic sonorities. Prominent musicologists debate whether or not the Pathétique may have been inspired by Mozart's piano sonata K. 457, since both compositions are in C minor and have three very similar movements. The second movement, "Adagio cantabile", especially, makes use of a theme remarkably similar to that of the spacious second movement of Mozart's sonata. However, Beethoven's sonata uses a unique motif line throughout, a major difference from Haydn or Mozart’s creation. This is the original Beethoven arrangement of this sonata.

Cunha Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata no 8 in C minor, op 13 commonly known as Pathétique (although commonly thought to be one of the few works to be named by the composer himself, it was actually named by the publisher, to Beethoven's liking) was published in 1799, though written the year before, when the composer was 27 years old. Beethoven dedicated the work to his friend Prince Karl von Lichnowsky. At the time of its publication, Beethoven was pleased with the title Pathétique for his op 13 piano sonata, although in later life, he came to regret it, claiming that all of his works were pathetic.
The Pathétique Sonata is perhaps the earliest of Beethoven's compositions to achieve widespread and enduring popularity. It is widely represented on the concert programs and recordings of professional pianists. As one of the more famous Beethoven pieces, it has been incorporated into several works of popular culture.
The rondo theme of the second movement is one of the most beautiful and famous tunes in the repertoire. This theme is not merely pretty; it is, after the vicious first movement conclusion, a heroic if melancholy affirmation that life goes on, that beneath sorrow and pain, there is still grace and nobility.
This Adagio movement opens with the famous cantabile ("in a singing style") melody. This theme is played three times, interspersed with two modulating episodes: the first going from F minor to E flat major, the second from A flat minor to E major. With the final return of the main theme, the accompaniment becomes richer and takes on the triplet rhythm of the second episode. The brief coda's stylistic diversity is arresting: four bars of Romantic transcendence followed by a strikingly conventional 18th-century close. Nimrod (from 'Enigma Variations', IX) for Piano Solo

Flavio Regis Cunha Edward Elgar composed his Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 36, popularly known as the Enigma Variations, between October 1898 and February 1899. It is an orchestral work comprising fourteen variations on an original theme.
Elgar dedicated the work "to my friends pictured within", each variation being a musical sketch of one of his circle of close acquaintances (see musical cryptogram). Those portrayed include Elgar's wife Alice, his friend and publisher Augustus J. Jaeger and Elgar himself.
In naming his theme "Enigma" Elgar posed a challenge which has generated much speculation but has never been conclusively answered. The Enigma is widely believed to involve a hidden melody.
The name of the variation IX (NIMROD) refers to Augustus J. Jaeger, who was employed as music editor by the London publisher Novello & Co. He was a close friend of Elgar's, giving him useful advice but also severe criticism, something Elgar greatly appreciated. Elgar later related how Jaeger had encouraged him as an artist and had stimulated him to continue composing despite setbacks. Nimrod is described in the Old Testament as "a mighty hunter before the Lord", Jäger being German for hunter.
In 1904 Elgar told Dora Penny ("Dorabella") that this variation is not really a portrait, but "the story of something that happened". Once, when Elgar had been very depressed and was about to give it all up and write no more music, Jaeger had visited him and encouraged him to continue composing. He referred to Ludwig van Beethoven, who had a lot of worries, but wrote more and more beautiful music. "And that is what you must do", Jaeger said, and he sang the theme of the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 Pathétique. Elgar disclosed to Dora that the opening bars of "Nimrod" were made to suggest that theme. "Can't you hear it at the beginning? Only a hint, not a quotation."
This variation has become popular in its own right and is sometimes used at British funerals, memorial services, and other solemn occasions. It is always played at the Cenotaph, Whitehall in London at the National Service of Remembrance. A version was also played during the Hong Kong handover ceremony in 1997 and at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The “Nimrod” variation was the final orchestral composition (before the national anthem) played by the Greek National Orchestra in a televised June 2013 concert, before the 75-year-old Athenian ensemble was dissolved in the wake of severe government cutbacks.
An adaptation of the piece appears at the ending of the 2017 film Dunkirk as part of the score Nimrod (for Violin Solo and Piano)

"Finally got a chance to play through ?The New England Suite??Three Poems for Solo Piano by the amazing Klaus Schader, a modern German composer. Klaus dedicated this piece to me. In Klaus Schader?s piano suite, he explored the deepest longings of human soul, then he painted it out using especially various and unusual harmonies into a master piece with colors of curiosity and warmth. Each harmony was made to wanting more. Wanting more in mystery, wanting more in the dream. In ?Delaware moon?, I hear the warmth of the moonlight dimming Delaware and it feels romantic and welcoming, yet mysterious. The unexpected disharmony of the four chords strikes you into intensive emotions, and reminds you that it was these struggles of reality make beauty even more beautiful. In the ?Old King?s Highway?, the changing of irregular meters and the use of 5/4 gives you the unsettling worries, yet Klaus uses the calming bass lines and chords to balance the scene, and it feels all is in control on the bumpy road. In ?Dusk on the Mohawk Trail?, the story line was based on the unusual chordal progressions, however the dominant sevenths chords throughout brings back the core spirit of the entire piano series-romance, mystery, and dream. It reminds one where the core of the soul is, and that is, where peace is at. Thank you Klaus!!"

Maestra Music's piano etudes were composed with students in mind, in keys and patterns that are easy and fun to play, yet invoke the evocative spirit and soul of Romantic/Classical music, in a form that is accessible to all. Just as the soundtrack sets the tone of the scene in a movie, the compositions of Maestra Music intend to set the stage for the creative mind to flourish.
It is my hope to spark the desire to learn, study and create by exploring and sharing music that inspires students to reflect, find and express the voice of their soul. When we are focused on creative expression, we focus on our truest self and as a result put our best foot forward in all our endeavors. THE GREAT WALL CONCERTO Arranged For 2 Pianos, 4 Hands

THE GREAT WALL CONCERTO for 2 Pianos, 4 Hands 33 Pages(Piano I Original Piano Score)           &(Piano II Orchestra Adaptation)Advanced Approx. Duration 13 minutes; 30 secondsBy ROBERT VAN HORNE Composing THE GREAT WALL CONCERTO for Piano & Orchestra was a journey of inspiration, passion, and deep personal connection for me. Having traveled to China, I was most impressed with seeing the Great Wall. Years later, I composed a musical work for piano and orchestra - a creative and classic concerto, capturing the Great Wall's grandeur and majestic attraction. My first visit to the Great Wall of China was in 1983 while engaged as a pianist onboard a cruise ship that sailed the waters of Asia. My first impression of seeing the Great Wall and the scenic landscape surrounding it, was one of awe and amazement. At that time, I did not realize the lasting effect this memorable attraction would have on me. Inspired and motivated by several cherished Chinese excursions to the Great Wall during my cruise ship engagement, I began the monumental task of scoring music for piano and orchestra several years later. An excerpt from 2008 Music Teacher of California Magazine review states “…The Great Wall Concerto is pleasant to listen to and has a retro 1940’s movie soundtrack mood about it - Rachmaninoff style chords against melodies in the strings...Listening to this piece, I imagined a film starring Joan Fontaine and Claude Rains as star crossed lovers fleeing their respective spouses on a visit to China.â€After many years of offering the original Conductor’s Piano & Orchestra Score of the concerto with instrumental parts (currently available at Sheet Music Plus and Sheet Music Direct), the Duo Piano Score of THE GREAT WALL CONCERTO for 2 Pianos, 4 Hands is now also available at those two websites. Both Piano I and Piano II parts are clearly notated with phrasing, dynamics, accents, suggested fingerings and musical word descriptions for 2 Pianos, 4 Hands performances. THE GREAT WALL CONCERTO for 2 Pianos, 4 Hands makes a wonderful and memorable performance piece for two piano recitals as well as a score for practicing with an orchestra, since Piano I is the original piano part.A 2 Pianos, 4 Hands recording or video of THE GREAT WALL CONCERTO is not available at this time, however, a 2006 recorded version with Piano & Orchestra is available for demo purposes only. Except for the piano, all other instruments included are digital samples. A YouTube video can be viewed at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_Zr10XMnJc In conclusion, THE GREAT WALL CONCERTO For Piano and Orchestra is not only a tribute to the Great Wall of China, but also to the power of music in expressing the inexpressible.Published by White Piano International Publishing Robert Van Horne is a member of ASCAP.Official Website: www.robertvanhorne.comEmail: rvh@robertvanhorne.com
