This unique collection celebrates the contemporary fiddle music of northeast Ireland, much of it for the first time in print. Not surprisingly, given its location and long history of traditional music, the fiddle music of this region shares some characteristics with Scottish music, yet it has its own distinct style. For those who are not familiar with this ruggedly attractive part of Ireland, this book will introduce you to some of its music and musicians. The tunes presented here, collected by County Antrim fiddler, Rowan Leslie, have all been written relatively recently by local musicians. Each tune is offered in two versionsone with the barebones melody and suggested accompaniment chords, and a second with ornamentation, articulation and bowing details. All tune types from northeast Ireland are represented, including jigs and reels, polkas and hornpipes, marches, barn dances and waltzes, plus set dances and slow airs. Moreover, the biographical sketches and backstories provided for each composer and tune demonstrate how the land itself, along with personal experiences and relationships, influence the fiddle music of northeast Ireland. ViolinVagabond Music #6020001. Published by ViolinVagabond Music (A0.845984). This is an original Celtic fiddle tune that I wrote & performed with my live-looping duo, The Khromatiks, in 2015. It was originally conceived as a loop station composition for 7-string electric violin, but can also be performed as a fiddle solo with any form of standard accompaniment. The looper arrangement was recorded on 7-string violin with a Boomerang III loop station. That being said, there are plenty of other gear configurations that will work. Any phrase looper/sampler that is capable of playing 2 tempo-synced tracks with overdubs will be able to handle this structure, such as the Singular Sound Aeros, BOSS RC-30, Ableton Live with a MIDI controller, etc. If you don't play 7-string, a 5-string can also play this chart as written if you use an octave pedal to record the low bass lines. A standard 4-string can play all of the melodies & harmonies, but some accompaniment parts in the loop arrangement will have to be transposed 8va.The tune itself is a fairly standard Celtic jig+reel medley. In the loop station arrangement there is an extended opening that explores some suspended harmonies over a pedal-tone D. String pads & chopping grooves are stacked in the accompaniment track to bring in a more modern fusion approach to the Celtic sound. With The Khromatiks this piece was performed as a duo with violin & drums/percussion, but as I mentioned it also works as a violin solo. Using the included lead sheets, you can perform this with guitar, piano, bass, etc. The sky is the limit, feel free to get creative and share your performance! Please, if you have questions or suggestions, feel free to contact me via my website, www.kylepudenz.com/, or on Instagram @theviolinvagabond Fiddle Caprices and Pizzicato Pieces: six virtuosic studies for solo violin

For intermediate to advanced players and suitable for concert programming. This cross-genre collection of virtuosic works for solo violin studies pizzicato and percussive techniques as well as tango and fiddle styles. Composer and violinist Alisa Rose is a modern musician with a versatile voice which is strengthened by the diversity of her musical background. A San Francisco Conservatory-trained violinist and chamber musician (B.M. with Camilla Wicks, M.M. in Chamber Music as a student of Bettina Mussumeli), Alisa complemented her formal violin training with extensive studies of improvisation, composing, and the rich American fiddle traditions. Her expressive voice and stylistic fluidity has been featured in ensembles that encompassed her love of both roots music and classical chamber music, including the modern-folk ensemble Real Vocal String Quartet (U.S. Department of State Cultural Ambassadors), classical crossover stars Quartet San Francisco (Grammy-nominated), bluegrass band 49 Special (Rockygrass Band Contest Winners), and in her current contemporary roots duo, Scroggins & Rose (Freshgrass Album Fund Awardees). As a composer, Alisa Rose blends American folk techniques with classical concert forms. This style can be heard on her album of cross-genre virtuoso works for solo violin entitled Fiddle Caprices and Pizzicato Pieces as well as many of her compositions for Real Vocal String Quartet including So it Goes and Slacker Ridge. Appalachia Waltz for unaccompanied violin by Mark O’Connor
Violin Solo – 3 pages

Appalachia Waltz is a piece composed by Mark O’Connor for unaccompanied violin which gained fame as the title track from the album featuring O’Connor, Yo-Yo Ma, and Edgar Meyer. The Sony Classical release remained for many months in the top ten of Billboard Magazine’s Classical music chart. O’Connor originally composed the piece as a solo for unaccompanied violin in 1993 before he brought it to the trio when compiling material for their album. Here, in its original form, “Appalachia Waltz” is just the way O’Connor performs it in his solo
concerts. With the musical influences coming from Scandinavian and Appalachian folk fiddling, O’Connor creates two independent lines while playing double-stops surprising the listener who is hearing just one fiddle. It is one of O’Connor’s most beautiful pieces. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels.
Original music printed from the composer’s manuscripts.

Violin Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.784979 Composed by Dorothy van Joolen Barth. Children,Contemporary,Standards. 25 pages. Dorothy van Joolen Barth #25815. Published by Dorothy van Joolen Barth (A0.784979). The Faerie Fiddler aims to make several not-so-easy techniques fun to practice and perform. These techniques include spiccato bowing, trills, and ornamentation. Development of such delicate techniques should be supervised by an experienced violin teacher. Although The Faerie Fiddler is not intended to be an etude book, I hope these elfin solos and duos will be enjoyed by both student and teacher as supplemental repertory. This complete anthology contains 15 solo pieces and 5 violin duos. Front matter is appended to the back. I've endeavored to channel mischievous Puck to sprinkle magic juice on tricky techniques by writing interesting pieces that (1) captivate the player while maintaining simple forms; (2) use woodland imagery; and (3) introduce traditional dance forms. Whimsical verses accompany the pieces and serve to (1) introduce each piece; (2) identify and highlight specific techniques (3) encourage observation of what the music is doing; (4) cast humor on the process, so that student, teacher, and writer are accomplices in the same game. The faerie fiddler techniques are reinforced throughout the book (all pieces except Raucous Rondo include spiccato bowing). Clarity and consistency are maintained in the expression markings so that the student will know when and when not to play off the string (only notes with dots are to be played off the string). The solo pieces and the Violin 2 parts of the duos are written in first position. Violin 1 parts of the duos use third position. Duo 4, Just a Dream, also uses fifth position in the upper part. Though the pieces are short and may look easy, their execution offers challenges, given the transparency of the spiccato bowing and ornamentation techniques. I hope The Faerie Fiddler will provide an enjoyable supplement to spiccato, trills, and ornamentation studies. The sample audio file presented here is the Elf Queen's Waltz.
