For intermediate to advanced players and suitable for concert programming. This cross-genre collection of virtuosic works for solo violin studies pizzicato and percussive techniques as well as tango and fiddle styles. Composer and violinist Alisa Rose is a modern musician with a versatile voice which is strengthened by the diversity of her musical background. A San Francisco Conservatory-trained violinist and chamber musician (B.M. with Camilla Wicks, M.M. in Chamber Music as a student of Bettina Mussumeli), Alisa complemented her formal violin training with extensive studies of improvisation, composing, and the rich American fiddle traditions. Her expressive voice and stylistic fluidity has been featured in ensembles that encompassed her love of both roots music and classical chamber music, including the modern-folk ensemble Real Vocal String Quartet (U.S. Department of State Cultural Ambassadors), classical crossover stars Quartet San Francisco (Grammy-nominated), bluegrass band 49 Special (Rockygrass Band Contest Winners), and in her current contemporary roots duo, Scroggins & Rose (Freshgrass Album Fund Awardees). As a composer, Alisa Rose blends American folk techniques with classical concert forms. This style can be heard on her album of cross-genre virtuoso works for solo violin entitled Fiddle Caprices and Pizzicato Pieces as well as many of her compositions for Real Vocal String Quartet including So it Goes and Slacker Ridge. Appalachian fiddle music, based on the musical traditions of the people who settled in the mountainous regions of the southeastern United States, is widely-known and played throughout North America and parts of Europe because of its complex rhythms, its catchy melodies, and its often-ancient-sounding stylistic qualities. The authors explore the lives and music of 43 of the classic Appalachian fiddlers who were active during the first half of the 20th century. Some of them were recorded commercially in the 1920s, such as Gid Tanner, Fiddlin John Carson, and Charlie Bowman. Some were recorded by folklorists from the Library of Congress, such as William Stepp, Emmett Lundy, and Marion Reece. Others were recorded informally by family members and visitors, such as John Salyer, Emma Lee Dickerson, and Manco Sneed. All of them played throughout most of their lives and influenced the growth and stylistic elements of fiddle music in their regions. Each fiddler has been given a chapter with a biography, several tune transcriptions, and tune histories. To show the richness of the music, the authors make a special effort to show the musical elements in detail, but also acknowledge that nothing can take the place of listening. Many of the classic recordings used in this book can be found on the web, allowing you to hear and read the music together. Contemporary Fiddle Tunes from the Northeast of Ireland

This unique collection celebrates the contemporary fiddle music of northeast Ireland, much of it for the first time in print. Not surprisingly, given its location and long history of traditional music, the fiddle music of this region shares some characteristics with Scottish music, yet it has its own distinct style. For those who are not familiar with this ruggedly attractive part of Ireland, this book will introduce you to some of its music and musicians. The tunes presented here, collected by County Antrim fiddler, Rowan Leslie, have all been written relatively recently by local musicians. Each tune is offered in two versionsone with the barebones melody and suggested accompaniment chords, and a second with ornamentation, articulation and bowing details. All tune types from northeast Ireland are represented, including jigs and reels, polkas and hornpipes, marches, barn dances and waltzes, plus set dances and slow airs. Moreover, the biographical sketches and backstories provided for each composer and tune demonstrate how the land itself, along with personal experiences and relationships, influence the fiddle music of northeast Ireland. Published by C Harvey Publications (A0.806441). From plaintive to fiercely beautiful, this arrangement of the traditional fiddle tune The Wind that Shakes the Barley evokes the words that Robert Joyce wrote for the ballad over a hundred years ago. This solo violin fiddle arrangement uses running notes and an energetic double stop section to give voice to the complexity of feelings Joyce wrote about in his poem. I sat within a valley green,I sat there with my true love,My sad heart strove the two between,The old love and the new love,The old for her, the new that madeMe think of Ireland dearly,While soft the wind blew down the gladeAnd shook the golden barley-Robert JoyceIntermediate level, 2 pages Irish Fiddle Tunes
