Violin Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.974444 Composed by Alisa Rose. Concert,Contemporary,Instructional. 37 pages. Alisa Rose #6016177. Published by Alisa Rose (A0.974444). For intermediate to advanced players and suitable for concert programming. This cross-genre collection of virtuosic works for solo violin studies pizzicato and percussive techniques as well as tango and fiddle styles. Composer and violinist Alisa Rose is a modern musician with a versatile voice which is strengthened by the diversity of her musical background. A San Francisco Conservatory-trained violinist and chamber musician (B.M. with Camilla Wicks, M.M. in Chamber Music as a student of Bettina Mussumeli), Alisa complemented her formal violin training with extensive studies of improvisation, composing, and the rich American fiddle traditions. Her expressive voice and stylistic fluidity has been featured in ensembles that encompassed her love of both roots music and classical chamber music, including the modern-folk ensemble Real Vocal String Quartet (U.S. Department of State Cultural Ambassadors), classical crossover stars Quartet San Francisco (Grammy-nominated), bluegrass band 49 Special (Rockygrass Band Contest Winners), and in her current contemporary roots duo, Scroggins & Rose (Freshgrass Album Fund Awardees). As a composer, Alisa Rose blends American folk techniques with classical concert forms. This style can be heard on her album of cross-genre virtuoso works for solo violin entitled Fiddle Caprices and Pizzicato Pieces as well as many of her compositions for Real Vocal String Quartet including So it Goes and Slacker Ridge. Gigue Fiddle Sonata for violin and piano composed by Mark O’Connor was a commission from the Library Of Congress in Washington D.C. It was premiered in Jefferson Hall during the Library’s prestigious ‘97-’98 chamber music season. The Library was featuring piano in the year’s programming and requested O’Connor compose utilizing the instrument. The premier was broadcast on NPR’s Performance Today and was also the centerpiece for a nationally broadcast public radio special, America’s Fiddler, Mark O’Connor at the Library Of Congress. Although O’Connor did not utilize the piano as a back-up instrument in his childhood fiddling contests, it does have a tradition accompanying fiddlers in Scotland, Shetland and Canada. The Sonata begins with Introduction and features a melodic and romantic theme with beautiful chords. Hoedown, in D minor, is very lively and tuneful. The Waltz is a lovely theme that undergoes some insightful development. The finale, Gigue, is a 6/8 dance which is quite a romp and features some fast bow work on a very catchy tune. The music is well suited for advanced and intermediate students.Original music printed from the composer’s manuscripts.Music editing, copying and engraving by Mark O’Connorusing Finale on Apple Macintosh 1997 Composed by Mark O’ConnorCommissioned by the Library Of Congress-Washington D.C. My specific task from the Hudson Commission was to concentrate music based on the natural habitat and beauty of the Hudson as well as on the time of the first European settlers. It was natural for me to think about old-time fiddling in this light. In 1909 Washington Irving described the Catskill Mountains as a dismembered branch of the Appalachian Mountains. My own Dutch ancestors settled in the Hudson Valley in the early 1600’s, and eventually traveled down the Appalachians to settle in the South in the early 1800’s. The old-time fiddling that dominated those areas along that route is the musical language utilized in creating this String Quartet. For the musical genesis of the Quartet, I initially created phrases from the fiddle that were molded out of old-time fiddling tradition. With technical twists and turns, the phrases became unique and new but all the while still connected to the tradition. It is these phrases that I used as material to create the String Quartet. Through the process of composing, techniques such as re- harmonization, development, canonic applications spill over each other like the Hudson tributaries in the Adirondacks. The counterpoint of the Quartet invigorates and establishes itself. The result is a wholly participating body emphasizing transitions from the traditional to the contemporary in sound and style. The music here is no longer fiddle music as the inventions of the quartet embarks on a new story, a new way to play, and with a new musical idea to put forward. This piece represents Mark O’Connor’s first work in a classical genre. The original instrumentation called for an unorthodox combination, omitting the usual second violin part and adding bass, to highlight the contrast between his fiddling style and the classical style of the other players. Upon his adapting of the score, O’Connor discovered that in many situations, execution was much more successful with the standard string quartet configuration. The Quartet was released on the Warner Bros. recording, The Fiddle Concerto. O’Connor, Daniel Phillips, Carter Brey and Edgar Meyer were the original cast who helped usher in the new O’Connor music style which helped pave the way for many more pieces to come. In this four-movement work, O’Connor offers a multitude of insights into ways in which traditional fiddling and the classical string writing of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries resemble each other. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels. Although I am today a cellist (and guitarist), my first instrument was violin, then recorder, and I started cello at the age of 9. I still play every now and then violin, in particular i find improvising on the violin easier then on any other instrument! Little Old Lady

This arrangement for string quartet retains the original key of G, well suited to string instruments. Although the first violin has much of the melody there are some attractive lines for the other parts. This elegant little song, which has always been a favourite of mine, describes a graceful elderly lady walking carefully round her neighbourhood, and reminds me of the style of a gavotte.
