Crosmer Thomas Wiggins was a talented American pianist and composer from the late nineteenth century. Born to slave parents, Wiggins was blind at birth and was not given usual slave labor. Instead, he learned to play piano by ear, and wrote his first composition at age 5. He was hired to tour throughout the US as a performer when he was only 8 years old, and earned an estimated $750,000 for his owner, General James Neil Bethune, making Wiggins arguably the most highly compensated pianist of the nineteenth century. Reportedly Wiggins could hear a performance only once and was able to reproduce the music at the piano. He continued to perform extensively until he was 55, when he allegedly suffered a stroke. Even after retiring, however, neighbors said they could hear Wiggins playing piano at all hours at his home in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Andrés Ballesteros (2010, ed. 2016; ASCAP)I wrote Sin Tregua in response to the ongoing drug war being waged in Mexico. After years of war, the government has proved ineffective and unwilling to deal with the violence. The government is a corrupted version of what was intended, so it seemed only fitting to musically corrupt the anthem that is supposed to represent our country. The music does this by bringing out the militaristic rhythms of the original but twisting the harmony out of shape into harsh dissonances, just as our country has been twisted out of shape. The melody of the national anthem never makes it past it's high point, instead falling apart back into the disorganized chaos it can't seem to escape. This piece is a short piece for advanced ensembles looking to include high-energy, slightly Ives-ian music. It could fit into programs featuring music about Latin America or by Latin American composers, concerts dealing with political issues, or many other contexts.Score details:Score (11 pages).Parts are available separately.Advanced level; appropriate for college ensembles or professional groups. ~2'30 Sin Tregua (parts)

Published by OCD Media (A0.1030362). Attributed to Pablo Picasso, the quote Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up. is a reminder to artists to capture the relaxed and naïve state of mind of children whose artistic approaches are not yet informed and diluted by the wisdom of years and the expectations of craft. When the normally informed and trained mind can retreat into a more relaxed and naïve state, the results can surprise and sparkle. Andante for String Quartet (Scintillare) captures a childlike, yet informed state of mind, a rare occurrence where music seems to be the only way to depict the liberating feeling. Scored for traditional string quartet, this short four-minute work was written for an advanced or professional ensemble needing repertoire for educational concerts in k-12 school venues. It's a highly accessible work with a lot of flourish, but still retaining elements of craft, for those in the audience that appreciate string quartet music on a more studied level. This work can also be used by school-aged (16-19 years-old) ensembles who have two advanced violinists paired up with a texturally supportive violist of intermediate ability who doesn't mind the occasional interspersed solo fill, and a rhythmically solid cellist, who will not have a technically difficult part, but still has a very important foundational role to play.
