Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1472849). “That We May Give Ourselves” is a short anthem based on a traditional collect — a prayer comprising an invocation, petition, and conclusion — that appears in various Anglican prayer books. The invocation, “Eternal God and Father, by whose power we are created and by whose love we are redeemed” acknowledges the eternity, creative power, and redeeming love of God. The petition, “Guide and strengthen us by your Spirit, that we may give ourselves to your service, and live this day in love to one another, and live this day in love to you” asks for the aid of the Holy Spirit in service to God and recalls Jesus's words in the Gospel of Matthew, 22:37-39: “And [Jesus] said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’”The conclusion, “through Jesus Christ our Lord,” reflects the mediating role of Jesus Christ the Son, as expressed in I Timothy 2:5 (“For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus”) and Ephesians 2:18 (“For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father”).Appropriate at any time of year, this short anthem of dedication is an ideal offertory selection. ©Copyright 2024 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1461385). “Holy Spirit, Ever Dwelling” are the opening words to a text written by the Welsh Anglican bishop Timothy Rees (1874-1939). Throughout, Rees employs the adverb “ever” to point to both the immanence and transcendence of the Holy Spirit in its timeless and perpetual activities:Holy Spirit, ever dwelling in the holiest realms of light,Holy Spirit, ever brooding o'er a world of gloom and night,Holy Spirit, ever raising those of earth to thrones on high, living, life-imparting Spirit, you we praise and magnify.Holy Spirit, ever living as the Church's very life,Holy Spirit, ever striving through us in a ceaseless strife,Holy Spirit, ever forming in the Church the mind of Christ, you we praise with endless worship for your gracious gifts unpriced.Holy Spirit, ever working through the Church's ministry, teaching, strength'ning, and absolving, setting captive sinners free,Holy Spirit, ever binding age to age and soul to soulin communion never ending, you we worship and extol.Mostly unison, with limited SATB voicing in verses 2 and 3, “Holy Spirit, Ever Dwelling” is quick to rehearse, easy to sing, and a meaningful declaration of praise to the third Person of the Holy Trinity.©Copyright 2024 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). The History of the United States Marine Corps and the Marine Corps HymnOn November 10, 1775, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution to establish the Continental Marines. is marked the formation of the United States Marine Corps. The Marine Corps was provided two battalions with a fleet. But the Treaty of Paris in April 1783 ended the Marine Corps along with the Revolutionary War. It was later permanently re-established on July 11, 1798. Since then the United States Marine Corps has been involved in the War of 1812, defending Washington in Bladensburg, Maryland, fighting for Andrew Jackson against the British in New Orleans, and fighting in the Mexican War (1846-1848) in which US Marines fought all the way to the Halls of Montezuma, Mexico City. The Marines served in the Civil War (1861-1865), the Spanish-American War (1898), the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902), the Boxer Rebellion in China (1900), and World War I. The Marines were later involved in World War II, the Korean conflict beginning in 1950, and the Vietnam conflict, beginning in 1965. By the 1970s, the Marines were securing NATO, and later were involved in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm (1990s), Somalia (1992), Operation Enduring Freedom (2001), the Global War on Terrorism and Operation Iraqi Freedom (2002), and in various conflicts since then. Since the inception of the Marine Corps in 1775,about 70,000 Marines have been killed in action. James Linzey served as a chaplain for the Marines in training at Fort Lee, Virginia, and as a contract chaplain at the Airman-Marine Memorial Chapel at MCAS Miramar from 2016-2019. While at Miramar, he gave leadership seminars to the Marines on the Battle of Midway. He is one of ten children of World War II hero, the late Navy Captain Stanford E. Linzey, Jr., CHC, USN (Ret.), who survived the sinking of the USS Yorktown (CV-5) in the Battle of Midway as a sailor, and later served with the Marines in Okinawa as a chaplain. Since the Marine Corps is part of the Department of the Navy, it has used the Navy hymn in chapel services. What is called “The Marine’s Hymn” cannot be sung in chapel services, because it is not a song of praise. As a fighting march, its author called it a hymn in name only. So, in commemoration of the United States Marine Corps, hymn writer James F. Linzey wrote the United States Marine Corps Hymn, “Serving for Thee.” He set it to the tune of Bethany, which was written by Lowell Mason in 1841. James Linzey is the General Editor of the New Tyndale Version (NTV) Bible translation. O God of Love, Give Peace Again — SATB voices, keyboard

Choral Choir,Choral,SATB Chorus - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1451982 Composed by Todd Marchand. Christian,Sacred. 5 pages. Con Spirito Music #1031298. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1451982). Written by Henry Williams Baker (1821-1877) and titled “The Lord Shall Give His People the Blessing of Peace,” the text of “O God of Love, Give Peace Again” was published in the 1861 edition of the landmark English hymnal, Hymns Ancient and Modern. Baker, who is perhaps best remembered for his hymn “The King of Love My Shepherd Is,” was chairman of the committee that prepared that hymnal. Because war is a constant in the world, Baker's text is always relevant. Stanza 1 is an entreaty that God would “make wars throughout the world to cease.” Stanza 2 asks that God recall his “works of old,” for only by God's hand can peace be given again. Stanza 3 extends this thought by asking “Whom shall we trust but thee, O Lord? Where rest but on thy faithful word?” and noting that “none ever called on Thee in vain.” A fourth verse, omitted in some hymnals, ends on the hopeful note that as saints and angels are bound “in holy love,” so we might also be bound to them and to one another in love and peace. In this original setting of Baker’s text, stanza 1 is sung by unison voices, stanza 2 by unison women, stanza 3 by unison men, and stanza 4 in parts following a recapitulation of the introduction and a modulation to the relative major key. ©Copyright 2024 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1439047). “Let All the World in Ev’ry Corner Sing” is a short poem from the collection, The Temple, by Anglican priest, poet, and orator George Herbert (1593-1633). A contemporary of William Shakespeare and John Milton, God-child to poet John Donne, Herbert is associated with the 17th-century Metaphysical poets and “is remembered as a pivotal figure: enormously popular, deeply and broadly influential, and arguably the most skillful and important British devotional lyricist of his or any other time.” Shortly before his death in 1633 at age 39, Herbert directed that a manuscript of his religious poems be sent to his fellow clergyman and friend, Nicholas Ferrar, reportedly saying, “Tell him ... if he can think it may turn to the advantage of any dejected poor Soul, let it be made publick: if not, let him burn it: for I and it, are less than the least of God’s mercies.” First published in 1633, The Temple was an enormously popular work, totaling more than 20,000 copies printed in 13 editions between 1633 and 1679.“Let All the World in Ev'ry Corner Sing” is the refrain of Herbert’s poem, “Antiphon (I),” which appeared in the “Christian Life” section of The Temple. An antiphon may be defined as a short sentence or refrain sung or recited before or after a psalm or canticle; and in Herbert's short poem of two stanzas, he may also have intended that the verses be recited antiphonally (alternately) by two groups. The third stanza in this setting for SATB voices and organ, a doxology by an unknown author, was added in the 19th century. ©Copyright 2024 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). This is a short, unaccompanied anthem (with keyboard reduction for rehearsal use) based on the text from Isaiah 53:4 suitable particularly for Passion Sunday, Good Friday, or a Holy Week Tenebrae service. The first section features lush chords while the main section features imitative counterpoint starting with the bass and rising through the other three voice parts. The anthem ends with chords, including the final open-ended, mildly dissonant chord. This piece isn't difficult to put together, and is quite easy for a choir of average-to-good readers. This MP3 recording was made on March 8, 2024 at the Harvard University Memorial Church and is a live performance by the Harvard Ferris Fellows at that day's Morning Prayer service.
