Solo Guitar - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.914739 Composed by Sol Paul Levy (1881-1920). Arranged by Eric J Roth. 20th Century,Romantic Period. Individual part. 6 pages. Eric J Roth #4593125. Published by Eric J Roth (A0.914739). 6 pages (2 pages of music) formatted for 8.5x11 printing.Sol Paul Levy, born in Chicago, Illinois in 1881, was a composer, arranger and performer of silent film music. He attended All Hallows College in Dublin, Ireland and served as first clarinetist in bands led by John Philip Sousa and Arthur Pryor. Levy led the foreign orchestrating department for Victor Records – which was the first music company to produce the disc record – and was a founder of Belwin Music. Levy compiled a series of photoplay cues for piano that was published in H.S. Gordon’s 1914 Motion Picture Collection. He also wrote songs, the most famous of which was That Naughty Waltz. Sol Paul Levy died in New York in 1920. During the Silent Film Era (1896-1936), showings usually featured live music, which helped to provide dramatic and emotional cues for the audience. The first public silent film shown in 1895 was accompanied by a guitarist. Soon after, films were commonly accompanied by either a pianist, organist, or chamber orchestra. Accompanists often improvised or compiled music from the classical, theatrical or popular repertories using a cue sheet identifying the effects or moods to be conveyed. While some films produced full scores or detailed cue sheets containing excerpts of music unique to that film, a repertoire of generic music soon developed to provide accompanists with music that they could adapt as needed. With titles such as Dramatic Conflict, Dramatic Tension, Heavy Mysterioso, and Weird Oriental Theme, Sol Paul Levy’s scores clearly served this purpose. The Vampire: A Dramatic Theme, composed in 1917, could have been easily adapted to any of the more than twenty films about vampires that appeared between 1909 and 1930. The score exists in three versions: one for small orchestra with piano conductor, one for chamber orchestra without piano, and one for chamber orchestra without timpani. Instruments included piano, flute, clarinet, two cornets, trombone, two timpani, two violins, viola, cello, and bass. Despite being composed for small orchestra, the piece, composed in A minor, is well suited to the guitar once instrumental and octave doublings are removed. While a solo guitar cannot produce the power and volume of a chamber orchestra, it certainly can evoke the intended mood. Except in a few instances owing to the limitations of the guitar, all original dynamic markings have been retained. All fingerings, of course, are editorial. Please note that some of the fingerings in the score may differ than those used in the linked YouTube Video. Fantasia Upon A Cabbage

Guitar - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1395754 Composed by Derek Hasted. Arranged by Derek Hasted. Baroque,Children,Comedy,Renaissance. 18 pages. Derek Hasted #979126. Published by Derek Hasted (A0.1395754). FANTASIA UPON A CABBAGE - GUITAR QUARTET/large ensembleFor Classical or Acoustic GuitarPerfect for School Music Teachers and for adults with a sense of the ridiculous...Derek Hasted writes This really does need a bit of explanation. Well, more than a bit...As a Guitar Teacher I often have to teach beginners how to read music, and of course the seven names of the musical notes can be made to spell words. Like CABBAGE.This, then, is a little piece of kitchen-based nonsense, cooking up a rather unappetising dish comprising cabbage, egg, beef and a lot, lot more cabbage. Iâ??ve arranged it (if that is the word) to include nods to the renaissance and baroque periods. The scores contain mark-ups to show where a particular player has an item of food in their motif. As well as EGG, youâ??ll find some GEG (thatâ??s scrambled egg) and a BAD EGG (and some sad music). Youâ??ll also find that the recipe includes a helping or two of BEEF.Bach comes in for a special mention, as thereâ??s a fugue-like section where the subject comes in a fifth away from the starting key (which Iâ??ve loosely interpreted as being a recipe in a foreign language) and thereâ??s some stretti (well, just about) at the end, when the fugue subjects overlap a tiny, tiny amount. And we also pay homage to the pedal section of an organ, where the CABBAGE subject comes in down low at half the speed of the original. The final, jazzy, chord at the end contains seven notes that collectively spell CABBAGE.Guitar 4 is supplied in treble and bass clefs - either or both will work in a large ensemble. So there are lots of teaching points, lots of things to ask the audience to listen out for, and a lot of mischief in a compact piece. The musical refrain CABBAGE is not the greatest motif to work with, but on reflection, when you have this much cabbage, itâ??s much better to listen to it than have to eat it...I hope you enjoy playing this piece! This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. Derek's website at www.derek-hasted.co.uk/smp lists all his arrangements by title and by number of instruments, with links to soundclips and sample score. Big Drum

Solo Guitar - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1202804 Composed by Richard Hirsch. 20th Century,Contemporary,New Age. Individual part. 9 pages. Richard Hirsch #801568. Published by Richard Hirsch (A0.1202804). I offer an original composition for solo acoustic guitar that I have carried with me over several decades and through several changes in living situation. I started working with the piece already back in the 1970s when I was living in Frankfurt/Main, Germany and kept developing it when I moved to Stockholm and from there to Gothenburg, Sweden. A first recording of the composition was made in a private studio just outside Gothenburg in 1987. I have only recently been able to transmit the piece to musical notation in preparation for publication. The piece has a relaxed nature and contains many repetitions of simple themes that are meant to evoke a sense of monotonous spaciousness. One musician who listened to the first recording said he thought it sounded minimalistic, which I thought was a good description, although at the time I was unaware that minimalism was a term used to describe a whole style of music. The piece has a rather meditative character in the first part, turning more rhythmic in the second part. The third part is a swing version of the first part and the piece ends with a return to the meditative straight first part. The piece is meant to be primitive in the sense of primordial and goes in something resembling a pentatonic scale based on A. The rhythmic second part should be played so that the guitar starts to hum an A tone, the humming carrying over into and through the more melodic sections. The composition has an organic development with slight variations in the basic themes as the piece progresses.Depending on the mood of the interpreting performer, the repetitions might be played in a different order or a different number of times. I seldom play the composition exactly the same every time myself. The piece has also worked as a basis for jam sessions with accompaniment of drums and a base, although the guitar had to have some sort of amplification. The piece can be played on either steel string or nylon string acoustic guitars, or electric guitars. I chose the title Big Drum because of the recurring base A that is a dominant feature of the piece, reminding me of the big drums played by people all over the world. The piece has a participatory character, especially in the more rhythmic and swing parts, inviting the listeners to clap, stamp their feet, or drum on whatever is available,As the notation is accompanied by tablature, I refrain from giving left hand fingering. The right hand fingering consists basically of base notes played by the thumb and treble notes played by alternating index and middle fingers in combination with the ring finger. Pluck for guitar

Toccata/Hands of Steel II. Strum/Serenade III. O Tanenbaum (Toccata reprise) IV. Two-Part Contention V. John Doe VI. True Pluck A number of years ago, the great English guitarist Julian Bream told David Tanenbaum - the dedicatee of tonight's premiere - not to premiere a guitar work unless he knew for a fact it was the composer's second guitar work. Sage advice. The guitar is an instrument that gives up its secrets to a non-guitar playing composer only reluctantly. Indeed, the timbral, digital and chordal subtleties of this most subtle and intimate instrument are truly understood by the guitarist only. Pity the outlander who composes for the guitar for the first time! With this last thought in mind I had, until last fall, managed to avoid writing a guitar piece. However, even the most abject compositional coward will relent when a musician like David Tanenbaum asks for a piece and offers his assistance and critical judgement in its composition. So it was with PLUCK, composed between November of 1995 and January of 1996. Bream's advice notwithstanding, PLUCK is my first guitar piece. Tanenbaum is brave. The title, PLUCK, thus refers to both the action of plucking strings as well as pluck - bravery, grit, true grit. PLUCK is written in six interrelated movements. The first movement, Toccata/Hands of Steel introduces much of the essential pitch and harmonic material of the piece, as well as Flamenco-style rasgueado strumming which, try as I might, I could not resist using. Movement two, Strum/Serenade, explains itself in its title. Movement three, O Tanenbaum (a designation for which David has forgiven me) reprises the Toccata and describes, well, a sort of musical tree (David has forgiven me for this, too). Two-Part Contention is a combatative, argumentative movement that pits the treble strings of the guitar against the bass. Movement 5, John Doe is a lyric and mysterious moment of rest before the manic finale. Movement 6, True Pluck, is a fast, furious and virtuosic finale. PLUCK is dedicated, with greatest respect and affection, to my friend David Tanenbaum. May he only want to play my second guitar piece. A First Position Christmas Classic Favorites

A First Position Christmas: Classic Favorites includes the melodies of 22 popular older Christmas favorites, each carefully edited for the beginning guitarist. Each song has at least two versions - one with TAB and chords included, and one edited for classically trained guitarists, including fingering suggestions. Special effort has been made into making the selections as accessible as possible to those in their first year of study, and all of the pieces are exclusively in first position. They are organized by difficulty level; the first few pieces use only the first three strings and no accidentals, while the final song includes quite a bit of chromaticism. In addition to this collection, there are also 16 Modern Singles in the First Position Christmas available on Sheet Music Plus, each of which includes a coupon for use on the Classic Favorites collection.Songs in the collection (those with asterisks* are Modern Singles and are NOT included in the Classic Favorites collection):Up On the Housetop O Come, All Ye Faithful Away in a Manger The Little Drummer Boy* Good King Wenceslas Jolly Old St. Nicholas We Three Kings We Wish You A Merry Christmas All I Want for Christmas (Is My Two Front Teeth)* Angels We Have Heard On High Blue Christmas* Feliz Navidad* Here Comes Santa Claus* Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer* Silver Bells*The Chipmunk Song* Hark the Herald Angels Sing Jingle Bells O Christmas Tree O Holy Night Let It Snow* Winter Wonderland* Deck the Hall God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen O Come, O Come, Emmanuel O Little Town of Bethlehem Frosty the Snowman* Home for the Holidays* Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree* White Christmas* It Came Upon the Midnight Clear Joy to the World Silent Night The First Noel What Child Is This? Brian Streckfus #776060. Published by Brian Streckfus (A0.1175935). Key: D minorTuning: Drop D TuningPages: 1This arrangement has a heavy metal vibe to it because of the key, tuning, dissonance and making it idiomatic for guitar.Tips:1. Perhaps the constantly occuring D bass notes could be called a pedal. This term originates from organs that have pedals for low pitches. So the A7/D is bizarre, but it isn't so strange that a classical composer wouldn't use it. Bach does this often. 2. Use the chord charts to aid in improvising more repeats. Since this is meant for a commercial, it is breif. 3. Be careful not to accidently bump into the second thinnest string on guitar: a B. The key of d minor has a Bb, so in this case, that string is a hot lava string.4. The final ending would be called a Perfect Authentic Cadence. This is because for the final chord, the soprano and bass are the home note (D), a.k.a. tonic. 5. Guitar position text explains where your index finger should be, NOT what fret is about to come next.6. The A+11 chord can be easier to understand by calling it a Cadential 6/4 chord. This is a classical music cliche and composition trick. The trick is that a home chord (tonic) with the 5th note in the key in the bass, actually sounds more like an away chord (dominant) with a lot of suspended notes on it. To be even vaguer; it's a common strategy to add a lot of dissonance to the last chord in the chord progression. Prisoner Of Love
