Voice and piano - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q5874 Song Cycle. Composed by Matyas Seiber. This edition: Sheet music. Downloadable. Duration 15 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q5874. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q5874). English. This substantial cycle was written for the tenor Peter Pears, and first performed by him in 1953 at the Royal Festival Hall, London, with the distinguished pianist Noel Mewton-Wood. It follws the example of Britten's Serenade in setting a variety of poets, and the set is framed by settings of the same words by Goethe in translation by Louis MacNeice, the unifying factor being presumably the quality of the poetry. The angry setting of Timor Mortis, using the well-known Dies Irae tune is the emotional hear of the cycle. John Turner 2010.

Cello and piano - advanced - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q6732 Composed by Rodion Shchedrin. This edition: Sheet music. Cello Library. Downloadable. Duration 9 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q6732. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6732). Deep Slavic emotions and gripping virtuosity - that's what characterizes many compositions by Rodion Shchedrin. Even if he has been a cosmopolitan for a long time, the Moscow-born composer nevertheless remains an originally Russian composer whose attachment to Russian music folklore and poetry has never been broken off. This tradition also shows in 'Belcanto', which was commissioned by the renowned Verbier Festival and premiered by the dedicatee Mischa Maisky, together with the composer on the piano. The cello part mainly maintains a cantabile character, while the piano accompanies and comments the vocal part with varied transparent sounds and figures.

French Horn Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1018931 Composed by Benjamin Harry Sajo. 20th Century,Contemporary. Individual part. 4 pages. Benjamin Sajo #6072965. Published by Benjamin Sajo (A0.1018931). Fugue: Wear Pearls and Smile is, on the outset, a fast, rambunctious adventure for many voices playing at the same time. It was conceived as a pairing for the equally vivacious second symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven–his 250th birthday is this year–but can stand on its own as one of my hardest, most challenging works to cook up.This piece is dedicated to those forced to appear positive when internally they’re falling apart. The title is inspired by a quote that’s been with me for a while, Why is it that men can be bastards and women must wear pearls and smile? by Lynn Hecht Schafren, the celebrated American jurist famous for campaigning for gender equity in courts. I’m taking the quote out of its initial context, but the power of that quote, for me, exemplifies how hard it is to maintain a sense of emotional decorum and dignity when you’re authentically a hot mess. And what’s more of a musical hot mess than a fugue? There are two realities to this piece. I’ll quote Dmitri Shostakovich, from his autobiography: The rejoicing is forced, created under threat, […] It’s as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, ‘Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing,’ and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering ‘Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing.’ On the one hand, it is insincere happiness, cloying perhaps. But the other truth, I’ll quote Oscar Hammerstein II, from The King and I: While shivering in my shoes / I strike a careless pose / And whistle a happy tune / And no one ever knows, / I'm afraid. I forced myself, against all impulses of my current being, to forge happiness. This piece, with its origin being a mental puzzle (fugues are puzzles), it became a construct where I could lift myself up and regain a sense of purpose. Therefore, it is invented–out of a literal need to survive–pure, genuine happiness.Future Performances: If you are interested in performing this work, please e-mail me.ABOUT THE COMPOSER: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings , with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

Trumpet Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1018953 Composed by Benjamin Harry Sajo. 20th Century,Contemporary. Individual part. 1 pages. Benjamin Sajo #6078693. Published by Benjamin Sajo (A0.1018953). Programme Notes: This composition was written to be considered for pairing alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony #3, the Eroica, but can stand on its own virtues as an intense and slow meditation on heroism. The music is like a boiling pot on the stove that’s just began to overflow its bubbles. The first part of the title, kommos, is a Classical Greek term from Attic dramaturgy, literally meaning striking but specifically referring to beating oneself up during lamentation--ripping at the hair, gouging out the eyes--like Oedipus--slapping the forehead, and other acts amid moments of extreme emotional turmoil. For example, from Aeschylus's play Agamemnon, a character bewails: Apollo, Apollo! God of the Ways, my destroyer! For you have destroyed me-and utterly [...]What is this fresh woe [...]what monstrous, monstrous horror, beyond love's enduring, beyond all remedy? And help stands far away! We can easily imagine physical accompaniment to the script; rather than bottling up the pain, the hero lets it all explosively come out.  The second part of the title, When the world moved on, is an epigraph taken from American author Stephen King’s The Dark Tower epic. The primary setting of the novel, a world similar in many ways to our own, is experiencing a dark age where the glorious past is all but a distant memory and all good things are referred to wistfully as occurring, When the world moved on. Yet, the main protagonist, Roland, the last gunslinger, emphasizes that it is not just a figure of speech, but the literal distances between destinations have increased, the positions of the stars have changed, as well as the occurrence of other unnatural phenomena. The world has become a gulf of isolation from all corners. Taken together, this piece is a lamentation for when the world moved on. Truly completed on Yom Kippur during the Covid-19 Pandemic, being unable to fast or go to synagogue, this is my atonement.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. B-Flat Clarinet,Piano,Violin - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1208741 Composed by Adam Lenhart. Chamber,Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival. 33 pages. Adam Lenhart #806841. Published by Adam Lenhart (A0.1208741). Introduction to The Rubáiyát of Omar KhayyámThe Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is a Persian poetry collection first put together in 1460 in Shiraz.  It consists of quatrains, four-line poems, with a set of unconventional themes.  The poetry is irreligious and questions the afterlife and God's providence.  It shows keen awareness of the shortness of life and the finality of death. It advises therefore that every fleeting moment of every day should be savored, with wine, lovers and song. The combination of a serious philosophy of life and a carefree attitude has made the poetry popular for centuries.  In 1859, Edward FitzGerald brought out a loose English translation that took the world by storm.  It became the most beloved and widely known poem in the English language for decades until its popularity finally faded in the late twentieth century. Although they were attributed to the great mathematician and astronomer, Omar Khayyam (d. 1131), the poems were by many anonymous hands, and he was just a frame author, akin to Scheherezade in the Arabian Nights.- Dr. Juan Cole, Richard P. Mitchell Collegiate Professor of History at the University of MichiganAbout the CompositionTwo Scenes from The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám explores and embodies two of the main themes that carry throughout the quatrains of the poem collection. In FitzGerald's translation, the quatrains follow a day to night cycle. The two movements reflect this by starting off with an abrupt wake up section and ending the piece with a nocturne.  The first movement, Wine, celebrates the camaraderie, joy and chaos that comes through the physical joy of being with friends. The clarinet, violin and piano interact in a conversational way, talking, laughing, and insulting one another in their own independent lines. The second movement is entitled Intimacy and explores the emotional joy of connecting with one another. The movement is set in a waltz style dance and draws influence from Chopin, Liszt and other romantic era composers. This is juxtaposed by youthful and energetic phrases so that the piece embodies all forms of love: young love, years of marriage and even friendship. Each movement has a sense of urgency and density which is present in the rubá'iyát as well, expressing to the reader that our time on Earth is so short and to make the most of each day.---------------------------Adam Lenhart (b. 2002) is a University of Michigan student of music theory, composition, voice and organ from Ottawa Lake, Michigan. As a theorist, his areas of study vary widely, including 18th century counterpoint, the early American Sacred Harp tradition, and impressionism. As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Association’s Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. He thoroughly enjoys collaboration with other composers, performers, poets and visual artists. Some of his recent projects include collaborations with individuals from the University of Michigan Chamber Music, History, and Poetry departments.

Female voice and violin - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q5934 Romance in Folk Style. Composed by Rodion Shchedrin. This edition: score and part. Downloadable, Score and part. Duration 8 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q5934. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q5934). Vocalises.Profound Slavonic emotion and thrilling virtuosity distinguish many of Rodion Shchedrin’s compositions. Even though he has long since become a citizen of the world, the composer born in Moscow has held on to his Russian origins and has never lost his ties with Russian musical folklore and poetry. In Tanya - Katya Shchedrin uses the syllabic content of the two women’s names alone to develop a melodic structure that has real emotional depth. A broad arc reaches all the way from the roots of traditional Russian song to the use of contemporary techniques of composition. These “songs without words†create vivid profiles by purely musical means - even though we never really find out who is concealed behind these two mysterious names.
