The original band version of Johnson Lane March was commissioned by Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Jr. H.S. Warrior Band in El Centro, CA for performance at the 6th Annual Concert of Premieres in May 2013. The following fall, the Imperial Valley Symphony premiered the orchestral version. The march was named for the street upon which the composer lives.

The national anthem of the USA arranged for full orchestra. There are also versions for Brass Quintet & String Orchestra in my stores.
"The Star-Spangled Banner" is the national anthem of the United States. The lyrics come from the Defence of Fort M'Henry, a poem written on September 14, 1814, by the then 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships of the Royal Navy in Baltimore Harbor during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. Key was inspired by the large U.S. flag, with 15 stars and 15 stripes, known as the Star-Spangled Banner, flying triumphantly above the fort during the U.S. victory.
The poem was set to the tune of a popular British song written by John Stafford Smith for the Anacreontic Society, a men's social club in London. "To Anacreon in Heaven" (or "The Anacreontic Song"), with various lyrics, was already popular in the United States. Set to Key's poem and renamed "The Star-Spangled Banner", it soon became a well-known U.S. patriotic song. With a range of 19 semitones, it is known for being very difficult to sing. Although the poem has four stanzas, only the first is commonly sung today.
"The Star-Spangled Banner" was recognized for official use by the United States Navy in 1889, and by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, and was made the national anthem by a congressional resolution on March 3, 1931 (46 Stat. 1508, codified at 36 U.S.C. § 301), which was signed by President Herbert Hoover.
Before 1931, other songs served as the hymns of U.S. officialdom. "Hail, Columbia" served this purpose at official functions for most of the 19th century. "My Country, 'Tis of Thee", whose melody is identical to "God Save the Queen", the United Kingdom's national anthem, also served as a de facto national anthem. Following the War of 1812 and subsequent U.S. wars, other songs emerged to compete for popularity at public events, among them "America the Beautiful", which itself was being considered before 1931, as a candidate to become the national anthem of the United States.
John Stafford Smith (30 March 1750 – 21 September 1836) was a British composer, church organist, and early musicologist. He was one of the first serious collectors of manuscripts of works by Johann Sebastian Bach.
Stafford Smith is best known for writing the music for "The Anacreontic Song", which became the tune for the US patriotic song "The Star-Spangled Banner" following the War of 1812, and in 1931 was adopted as the national anthem of the United States.

Bierley suggests that since the work was dedicated the the Columbia Commandery No. 2, Knights Templar, of Washington, D.C., and composed for its Twenty-fourth Triennial Conclave of the Grand Encampment, that the title may refer to Myron M. Parker, one of the principal men responsible for the success of the conclave.(1)Sousa is so universally loved, that it seems a shame to restrict his performance only to marching bands and concert bands. A slow march I entitled The Royal Hussar, is an original ceremonial slow march of mine, suitable for indoor or outdoor performance. Slow March: This is a ceremonial pace, used for funeral marches and when a unit’s colours are marched out in front of the troops. The feet are kept parallel to the ground and the arms are never used. In the United States Marine Corps, arms swing as the distance they normally would in quicktime, but at the same pace as marching. U.S. Marine Color Guards do not swing their arms. Slow March is typically used in the Marine Corps for funeral details and ceremonies such as the Marine Corps Ball (when the cake is escorted out). In Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines this is done during religious processions whenever a military band joins it. This march style is the official parade march in the armed forces of Bolivia and Ecuador and the military academies and schools of Venezuela, done with the goose step during parades and ceremonies. The standard pace is 60 paces per minute. Famous slow marches include:Preobrajensky Regimental Slow March Presented to the Royal Marines by Admiral of the Fleet The Earl Mountbatten of Burma on 10th June 1964 and first performed as the Regimental Slow March of the Royal Marines on Horse Guards Parade that night. The march was composed by the Russian composer Donajowsky for the Russian Tzar’s Preobrajensky Guard. The Royal Hussars Slow March ’Coburg’, a tune composed by Haydn and arranged by Grant-James in the late 19th Century, is without doubt one of the most well-known and famous Slow Marches to be written. ’The Eagle’, which itself is a combination of the 14th and 20th Hussars slow marches is also a very strong march, but not widely known outside 14th/20th King’s Hussars’ circles. The Garb of Old Gaul (sometimes given as Auld Gaul) is an 18th-century patriotic Scottish march and song about Highland soldiers during the Seven Years War. The music was written by General John Reid, who was a senior officer of the 42nd Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch) during the Seven Years War. The words have traditionally been attributed to Sir Harry Erskine (1710 -1765). Robert Burns described it as This excellent loyal Scottish song and states that it first appeared in print in Herd’s Collection of 1769. Alternative titles include The Highland Character and The Highland or 42nd Regiment’s March. The tune was originally a quick march but was later rearranged as a slow march. I'd long wanted to compose an opera based on Arthur Miller's masterpiece based around the Salem witchcraft trials in the American colonies in 1692. Knowing that this was unlikely to come to fruition, nevertheless I sketched out some ideas just in case, which I turned into a 3 movement work for a local orchestra in 1999 for performance at their concert in September 2000. During January - March 2020 I revised the work for a larger orchestra adding 2 more movements (nos 3 & 4) and revising the existing movements. The opening movement is intended to be the Prelude to the opera. The 2nd movement the Prelude to the tense 3rd Act. The 3rd movement takes place at the climactic moment of Act 3, when John Proctor's valiant and desperate attempt to expose Abigail Williams' for what she is backfires, leading to his arrest. The 4th movement opens with the Hymn/Psalm associated with the people of Salem and continues with the reconciliation in prison between John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth.The 5th and final movement accompanies John Proctor's march to execution having nobly torn up his confession of witchcraft. The Hymn/Psalm returns before reminiscences of the opening Prelude return ending the work in a sense of uneasy peace. Parts can be made available upon request.

The Great Escape (1963) is one of the great American epic war adventure films starring some of the greatest actors of the age like Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, Donald Pleasence, James Coburn, David McCallum, Gordon Jackson, among many others. The soundtrack was composed by Elmer Bernstein who had enjoyed great acclaim for his music for the 1960 epic The Magnificent 7 (also starrring Steve McQueen). The Great Escape March theme is regarded as one of the best loved war film themes harnessing both a British and an American patriotic flavour in its themes. Its bitter sweet jauntiness successfully catches the mood of the film, the optimism and indominatable spirit of the prisoners always hell bent on trying to escape, and the German march theme also makes a brief appearance to reflect all the voices in the narrative of the story. Other film composers have used a similar approach using a jaunty march theme like Bernstein does - notably The bridge over the river Kwai and A bridge too far - while other composers have tried (arguably) less successfully to encapsulate appropriate pathos alongside that optimism in the 'optimistic' themes.This arrangement is a great bite sized orchestral excerpt appropriate for any concert of film music, or military war/historic themes. This piece was inspired totally by The Imperial March (Darth Vader Theme) by the legendary composer John Williams and analysis from this video https://youtu.be/m3xPOs9CtJ4. Composer Pagán-Pérez followed some teachings organized in Volume I of the Suzuki Methods to compose the piece for the string sections and a grade level 1 or 2 for the wind and brass instruments (rhythms, melodies, or range). The key of D Major can be a challenge for the winds and brass (especially for clarinets and trumpets in Bb), but music teachers, conductors, and students will manage the obstacles by practicing scales and arpeggios. My Concerto for Orchestra (2007) is a twenty-minute work in which different sections of the orchestra, as well as individual solos and duos from within the orchestra, are highlighted as the music unfolds. The work continues my interest in two-movement forms that began with my Cello Concerto (1991), and was later developed in Sortilège (1996) and Symphony (Broken Consort) (2004). In these works, and in the Concerto for Orchestra, each movement is given equal weight and importance with the second developing earlier material and taking it in new directions. The two-movement form of the Concerto for Orchestra derives from a symphonic sonata structure, reshaping the traditional four-movement form and combining this with aspects of sonata form, a tradition that goes back to Liszt, Schoenberg and Sibelius: 1st movement (i) exposition of ideas - dramatic and sudden (ii) scherzo and development 1 - resolute 2nd movement (iii) adagio - calm and unhurried (iv) development 2 with recapitulation - intense and energetic The Concerto for Orchestra was commissioned by the Musikalische Akademie des Nationaltheatre-Orchesters Mannheim with the support of Die Landesbank Baden-Württemberg for its first two performances on 31st March and 1st April 2008 conducted by Friedemann Layer. The score is dedicated in friendship and admiration to Ronald Zollman.
