Prologue: The palace of Hebe in the background and her gardens in the wings Hebe, goddess of youth, summons her followers to take part in a festival (Air: Vous, qui d'Hébé suivez les lois). Young French, Spanish, Italians and Poles rush to celebrate with a series of dances, including a musette. The ballet is interrupted by the noise of drums and trumpets. It is Bellona, goddess of war, who arrives on the stage accompanied by warriors bearing flags. Bellona calls on the youths to seek out military glory (Air and chorus: La Gloire vous appelle). Hebe prays to Cupid (L'Amour) to use his power to hold them back. Cupid descends on a cloud with his followers. He decides to abandon Europe in favour of the Indies, where love is more welcome. Published by The Composer's Own Press (A0.944032). CONCERTINO, for Clarinet, Mandolin, and Orchestra CONCERTINO was officially commissioned in 2011 by the Geneva Chamber Orchestra. The composition explores the sound combination of two, seemingly opposing, instruments and sound characters: the clarinet and the mandolin. Thus, the three-movement work is a short double-concerto for clarinet and mandolin, accompanied by a chamber orchestra. The first movement, titled Psalm 148 and is a mixture of a coronation fanfare and a wild improvisatory-like dance. The music is based on the structure and ideas expressed in the 148th Psalm. For the transformation of this Psalmodic text into music I was concerned with two elements: first, the linguistic pulse of the ancient Biblical Hebrew gives the music its ever-changing meters and vibrant rhythms. The second element was the poetic concept presented in the text: Heaven vs. Earth, Universe vs. Planet, or Heights vs. Depths. The contrasting nature of these elements is described in the following verses: Hallelujah, Praise ye the LORD from the heavens; praise Him in the heights. (Psalm 148, verse 1) Praise the LORD from the earth, ye sea-monsters, and all deeps. (Psalm 148, verse 7) Finally, both Heaven and Earth join in praise together: Let them praise the name of the LORD, for His name alone is exalted; His glory is above the earth and heaven. (Psalm 148, verse 13) The musical expression of these contraries is reflected and the use of high-range and soprano instruments (flutes, clarinet, trumpets, violins) versus low-range instruments (trombone, bassoons, cellos and basses.) The second movement, Romacero Viejo (and old love song) is a slow, lyrical dirge-like melody in a Sephardic Judeo-spanish style. In this movement the mandolin plays in the manner of an Oud – a traditional pear-shaped Arabic lute. The harmony sits mostly on a single pedal note while the clarinet imitates the chant with rhythmically free ornatmental patterns. The third and final movement, Allegro con brio, is a festive klezmer dance with a traditional Bulgar (or Freylech) rhythm, where the regular 8/8 meter is constantly divided into the irregular count of: 3+3+2. In the middle of this movement the two soloists play a cadenza, which allows them to present their contrasting yet complementary instrumental characters. The movement is titled The Geneva Bulgar in honor of the City of Geneva and the wonderful memories I have been carrying with me ever since my time there as a young student at the Conservatoire de Musique. ISBN 9782898522048.Antônio Francisco Braga (1868-1945) belongs to the generation of Brazilian composers of the first republican period, aesthetically tied to romanticism, alongside Henrique Oswald (1852-1931), Leopoldo Miguez (1850-1902), Glauco Velásquez (1884-1914), and Barrozo Neto (1881-1941). Born in Rio de Janeiro, on April 15th, 1868, he began his musical studies at the Asilo dos Meninos Desvalidos, in 1876. In 1883, he enrolled at the Imperial Conservatório de Música where he studied harmony and counterpoint with Carlos de Mesquita – a former student of César Franck, Durand, and Massenet – and clarinet with Antônio Luís de Moura. Braga's first compositions date from this period: Sonho de Dante (1885), Dolce far niente (1886), the first Valse Romantique for piano (1886), among others.In 1887, he premiered his first symphonic work, Fantasia-Abertura. In 1890, being one of the finalists in a competition to choose the new Brazilian national anthem, Braga was awarded a scholarship to study in Europe, where he took classes with Jules Massenet at the Paris Conservatory. During this period, he wrote some of his most important symphonic works, Paysage, Cauchemar, Episódio Sinfônico, and Marabá (which was performed by Richard Strauss and the Vienna Philharmonic in 1920, in Brazil). His opera Jupyra is considered one of the greatest Brazilian compositions of that genre.Back in Brazil, he was appointed professor of counterpoint, fugue, and composition at the Instituto Nacional de Música, in 1902. There, some of the finest Brazilian composers studied with him, like Glauco Velásquez and Lorenzo Fernândez.Braga wrote operas, symphonic works, songs, sacred music, two Masses, music for piano, different chamber formations, band, and choir. He is the author of many patriotic hymns, the most popular of which is Hino à Bandeira (with lyrics by Olavo Bilac). He explored Brazilian nationalist elements in some of his works, as in Variações sobre um Tema Brasileiro and in the Trio for violin, cello and piano, whose third movement is based on a lundu (a musical genre and dance of Afro-Brazilian origin).In addition to being a composer, Braga was one of the most active conductors of his time, having been ahead of three orchestras in Rio de Janeiro: Instituto Nacional de Música, Sociedade de Concertos Sinfônicos, and Theatro Municipal. Braga conducted the Brazilian premiere of major symphonic works such as La Mer (Debussy), Pacific 231 (Honegger) besides other numerous Brazilian compositions.In 1938, he retired from Instituto Nacional de Música. He passed away on March 14th, 1945, in Rio de Janeiro.Unfortunately, Francisco Braga never wrote for the guitar. However, over a century ago his music had already been incorporated to its repertoire. According to information found in newspapers of the time, Spanish guitarist Josefina Robledo included transcriptions of pieces by Braga in her programs when she performed in Brazil: Gavota e Minuete (from the melodrama Contratador de Diamantes), in 1919, in São Paulo, and the waltz-caprice Corrupio, in 1921, in Rio de Janeiro.The piano score of Madrigal Pavane was dedicated to Alexina Leitão and published by Casa Vieira Machado, in 1901. According to the composer’s catalogue, there are two other versions of this piece: strings orchestra (1901) and quartet (which is still in manuscript). Dedicated to Braga’s childhood friend José de Souza Rocha, Timburibá (the name of a Brazilian tree) is a tango for piano from 1886, published by Narciso & Arthur Napoleão.Antônio Francisco Braga (1868-1945) appartient à la génération des compositeurs brésiliens de la première période républicaine, esthétiquement liés au romantisme, aux côtés de Henrique Oswald (1852-1931), Leopoldo Miguez (1850-1902), Glauco Velásquez (1884-1914) , et Barrozo Neto (1881-1941). Né à Rio de Janeiro, le 15 avril 1868, il commence ses études musicales à l'Asilo dos Meninos Desvalidos, en 1876. This is the third of a set of three Pièces en trio published in Paris in 1692 which have previously been attributed to Jean Baptiste Lully. The scoring indicated was ‘ Pour les Flutes, violin, & Dessus ve Viole Composées par M. Marais, Ordinaire, de la Musique de la Chambre du Roy.’ The dedication was to Mademoiselle Roland.The Suite has thirteen separate movements though the Double is a variation of the preceding Gavotte and the four Menuets would have been played without a break. In editing the Suite I have modernised the musical notation e.g. notes tied over bar/measure lines indicated by a dot are shown as tied notes of the correct value. All editings are shown in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines. No dynamic markings are indicated in the original edition and, as these are very much a matter of individual taste, I have left them to your discretion.The suite is for three equal players of intermediate standard and above. The movements are, Prelude, Sarabande, Fantaisie champetre, Gavotte en rondeau, Double, Gigue, Bransle Village, Rigaudon, 4 Menuets & Symphonie.The arrangement includes a clarinet, an instrument which was being developed from the chalumeau in the late seventeenth century by Johan Denner and his son in Nuremburg.

Au 17ème et au 18ème siècle, c’est une pièce de musique de chambre, instrumentale ou vocale qui convient au jeu en plein air ou à une interprétation nocturne. Au 19ème siècle, le créateur du « nocturne pour piano » au sens technique est le compositeur irlandais John Field. Ces nocturnes sont des morceaux élégants avec une mélodie simple, nostalgique et méditative. Chopin adopte cette appellation et son idée générale pour ces phrases poétiques à l’accompagnement développé et cadencé. Il écrit vingt et un nocturnes qui ont contribué à développer sa célébrité. Le nocturne n° 20 en ut dièse mineur composé en 1830 est une pièce d’une grande originalité dans l’alliance du sentiment et de l’esprit. C’est une pièce beaucoup moins condensée que les autres nocturnes mais qui nous fait ressentir une beauté qui nous ensorcelle. Cette œuvre a été trouvée parmi les papiers du compositeur après sa mort et a été éditée seulement 26 ans plus tard. Il utilise dans son œuvre la notation d’un thème pris à son concerto pour piano en fa mineur, pièce antérieure. Dans la première version, qu’il abandonne plus tard, la mélodie est composée sur une mesure à 3/4 comme dans le concerto avec un accompagnement à 4/4, mesure qui domine dans le nocturne. Cette notation est très étonnante pour les années 1830, cependant la façon de combiner des tempi différents se développe surtout au 20ème siècle. Chopin nous confie une partie de son journal intime à travers ces pages mélancoliques, d’une sensibilité communicative. Les pianistes romantiques pourront naturellement expimer leurs états d’âme à travers ce nocturne d’une grande expressivité. Partition + Biographie + Notes sur l'oeuvre
