This revised book combines three of Ms. Trotter's popular books: Getting Started in Pop Harp, The Creative Folk Harpist, and Let's Play Country Harp.Included are compilations from workshop presentations into this book which contains repertoire suggestions, ways to tune your harp, scales and chords, intervals, seventh chords and minor scales, diminished chords, voicing, inversions, bass patterns, chord progressions, steps in making an arrangement , introductions, endings, and how to play variations on the melody. To be a creative and versatile pop harpist, classic training is valuable and necessary. However, the habit of playing every note as written is sometimes hard to break when learning to improvise. The act of playing notes spontaneously may be overwhelming to the classically trained harpist. There are more and more written arrangements for popular music available to buy, but is satisfying to have the skills to arrange one's own pieces. It is possible to play popular music from a fake book or by ear, with training. The suggestions in this book should help bridge the gap from classical to pop, and hopefully provide some tools for the improvisation necessary for playing popular music. These ideas come from Louise's own experience, and from workshops with nationally knows pop and jazz harpists. It is hoped that the material presented will open up new avenues for the harpist to arrange and improvise in order to widen opportunities to perform.With simple melodies and uncomplicated harmonies, this book also instructs the harpist on the basics of achieving that country-western sound, as well as techniques on imitating such traditional country western instruments as guitar, banjo, fiddle, string bass, and piano. A good book for any harpist wishing to enlarge their repertoire to include this style of music.

"It is five o'clock, Paris awakens" (Il est 5h, Paris s'éveille) is an iconic 1968 French song by singer-songwriter Jacques Dutronc. It has been covered by artists such as Sylvie Vartan, Jacques Le Glou, Ange, Zaz and An Pierlé, and was voted the best French-language single of all time, beating Jacques Brel's "Ne me quitte pas" into second place. The song features a famous, playful flute solo improvised by renowned classical flutist Roger Bourdin on the day of the recording.
Flutist Myriam Darme and harpist Maia Darme of “Traversées” arranged the hit for flute and harp duet. This is the version they perform live in concert, as heard in their Youtube music video (https://youtu.be/hEkwpnmKm0U). The harp handles the melody and upbeat accompaniment while the flute responds with an elaborate birdlike counterpoint.

Published by Trish Boril (A0.1465628). This is an easy harp arrangement of Wake Me Up When September Comes by Green Day. It features a simplified melody line for the right hand and broken chords in the left hand. Chord symbols also included for improvisation. Can be adapted for smaller harps - simply play in a different octave. There is ONE lever change on the C minor chord. You can flip the lever down on the E to get the E-flat if your harp is tuned in E-flat, then flip it back up in the next measure. If you prefer not to flip levers, simply leave out the E in that chord entirely. Harps with no levers? Just play a C and a G on that C minor chord, and leave out the E/E-flat.

It is an original Harp improvisation to be accompanied by an adaptation for strings inspired by Tchaikovsky`s choir piece „Cherubic Hymn. The harmonic structure of Tchaikowky`s original work has been faithfully reproduced, so all credits for this piece goes to him. Rather than an arrangement, the outcome of this adventurous experience resulted in an improvisation for the Harp. With the added melodies on the Harp and the stringed instrumental caracter of the orquestral adaptation, the piece gains a stronger tone contrast, keeping at the same time its deep spiritual beauty, thus bringing it to a wider range of public and performance choices. it is very easy to perform, yet it moves deeply both performer and public. The piece is appropriate for beginner students. It can be used in serious concerts and all kinds of cultural events. It is a very Spiritual piece, it induces a wonderful mood in Baptism or Christmas celebrations. One can get married to it. The piece is also appropriate to honor someone in a funeral. Although this score was composed in full intent to be performed as written, the Harp part can be played by itself and the orquestral arrangement from the Hymn can also be performed without the Harp. This score was conceived so that without adaptations, the Harp the orchestra and the original Choir could perform at the same time. Or intercalated „Ad Lieb, the Harp with the choir, or the orquestra with the choir. Instead of a full string orquestra one can also use just a string quartet and a doublebass. A Little Historical Note. „The Cherubic Hymn is part of the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom written in the fourth century by the Byzantine saint, honored as such by both Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches. In the context of the liturgy, the hymn is sung during the most mystical and spiritual part of the service as a prelude to the transubstantiation of bread and wine into the real presence of Our Lord. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the inspiring Master and genial composer with whom I had the happy causality to write this improvisation or „collab was born in; 25 April/7 May 1840 – 25 October/6 November 1893, was a Russian composer of the late Romantic period, he created an outstanding number of unique musical masterpieces. Tchaikovsky was honored in 1884, by Emperor Alexander III, and awarded a lifetime pension. Thanks to Claudia Eppelt for the all the Love the wonderful painting and cover design, this work is dedicated to her. Carl Orff devoted much of his life to the development of a philosophy of Music for Children, based on his belief that music is the natural outcome of speech, rhythm and movement. His ideas and pioneering work have had a major influence on music and dance education throughout the world and today that work continues under the guidance of leading teachers and educators in many countries. The five basic German volumes of Music for Children by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman were published between 1950 and 1954. Editions have since been published in Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Estonia, France, Ghana, Great Britain (including a special Welsh edition), Greece, Italy, Japan, Korea, Latin-America, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan and the USA. In 1952 the first edition in translation appeared an English language adaptation by Doreen Hall and Arnold Walter for their Canadian and American students. A few years later, Margaret Murray independently developed a version (1957-1966), essentially to fulfil the needs of United Kingdom teachers. Inevitably the considerable growth of Orff-Schulwerk in the United States led to the publication of the American Edition (1977) to satisfy the requirements of a different educational system and national heritage. Orff-Schulwerk: Music for Children has proved itself to be a stimulating source of material for music teaching. Carl Orff's fundamental educational ideas have revitalized music education in nursery schools, at all levels of primary and secondary education and in special music schools, based on the concepts that: - music, dance and language are inter-related and animated through rhythm. - when children discover, invent, improvise and compose, their experience of music is intensified. These creative activities are complementary to those of interpreting and listening to music. - all who take part are encouraged to contribute, not only vocally but also instrumentally. - the Orff approach to music education is many sided. it is concerned with practical music-making, it provides fundamental experiences and it lays the foundation for a comprehensive musical training. - movement games and activities for body awareness in space, time and flow, lead to movement improvisation and dance forms. - music and dance have been notated in many different ways in history. Various ways of writing down sounds and music, as well as playing from and interpreting different kinds of sources are being explored. Today, countless teachers and institutions are using these ideas. More and more teachers look for ways of involving their students in active music making. In particular, they seek to challenge their pupils' creativity by the use of music, dance and speech - as media of human expression - as a foundation of all education. A prerequisite for work in Orff-Schulwerk is the artistic and pedagogical training of teachers. The Orff Institute was founded in 1961 as a Department of the 'Mozarteum', in Salzburg, Austria. Training offered includes a four-year diploma course, a two-year post-graduate course, and a one-year-course in English. At the opening of the Orff Institute in Salzburg in 1963, Carl Orff ended his speech with a quotation from Schiller: 'I have done my part, now do yours.' Maestro Max Hobart called me in the spring of 2009 and told me to check out this young jazz phenom on the saxophone named Grace Kelly. I said OK, that’s cool. That summer we went to the Regatta Bar in Harvard Square to hear her play with her band, and I was duly impressed by her musicality, soulfulness and chops. Max asked if I would be interested in writing a concerto for her and the Wellesley Symphony. I said, Sure. It sounds like a great idea. One of the most cherished jazz records in my vast collection is the collaboration between Stan Getz and Eddie Sauter entitled Focus. Eddie, who used to be an arranger for the Benny Goodman Band in the forties, went on to create the Sauter Finegan Band in the early fifties. The band was one of the first to include the piccolo, oboe, bassoon, harp, celesta, French horn, tuba, xylophone, glockenspiel, chimes, timpani, and other unusual symphonic instruments in the standard big band format of trumpets, trombones, saxophones and rhythm section of piano, bass and drum set. On the album Focus Eddie Sauter composed seven tracks of music for string orchestra and rhythm section. Stan Getz did not have a written part - he just improvised over the written music. If you are not familiar with this recording, then you will do yourself a huge favor if you go find it and add it to your own CD collection. The music is phenomenal and Stan is on top of his game, soaring above the strings with endless melodic inventions, flights of imagination and whimsy! It is one of those desert island CDs one should not be without. When I emailed Grace about this project and mentioned Stan Getz’s Focus, she said, It’s one of my favorite albums. So, we got off on a positive note immediately. My work, Focus on Grace … Concerto for Jazz Saxophone and Orchestra, is very much inspired both by the Stan Getz album and by the performances I heard of Grace and her band. The first movement is based on a funk groove in D minor: Grace’s part is initially written-out but she improvises freely in the coda. Maestro Max Hobart called me in the spring of 2009 and told me to check out this young jazz phenom on the saxophone named Grace Kelly. I said OK, that’s cool. That summer we went to the Regatta Bar in Harvard Square to hear her play with her band, and I was duly impressed by her musicality, soulfulness and chops. Max asked if I would be interested in writing a concerto for her and the Wellesley Symphony. I said, Sure. It sounds like a great idea. One of the most cherished jazz records in my vast collection is the collaboration between Stan Getz and Eddie Sauter entitled Focus. Eddie, who used to be an arranger for the Benny Goodman Band in the forties, went on to create the Sauter Finegan Band in the early fifties. The band was one of the first to include the piccolo, oboe, bassoon, harp, celesta, French horn, tuba, xylophone, glockenspiel, chimes, timpani, and other unusual symphonic instruments in the standard big band format of trumpets, trombones, saxophones and rhythm section of piano, bass and drum set. On the album Focus Eddie Sauter composed seven tracks of music for string orchestra and rhythm section. Stan Getz did not have a written part - he just improvised over the written music. If you are not familiar with this recording, then you will do yourself a huge favor if you go find it and add it to your own CD collection. The music is phenomenal and Stan is on top of his game, soaring above the strings with endless melodic inventions, flights of imagination and whimsy! It is one of those desert island CDs one should not be without. When I emailed Grace about this project and mentioned Stan Getz’s Focus, she said, It’s one of my favorite albums. So, we got off on a positive note immediately. My work, Focus on Grace … Concerto for Jazz Saxophone and Orchestra, is very much inspired both by the Stan Getz album and by the performances I heard of Grace and her band. I SEE STARS IN YOUR EYESA BEAUTIFUL, RHAPSODIC PIECE FOR SOLO HARP I See Stars in Your Eyes is a rhapsodic piece for solo harp (lever or pedal) with an improvisatory feel. The melody is flowing, the harmonies are elegant, and the mood is hauntingly tender. This five minute work makes for a great addition to the repertoire of either student or freelancer, and is perfect as a contrasting piece on a recital, atmosphere for a cocktail hour, or a casual serenade for family & friends. As a composer, a goal for Salazar is to create scores that help encourage classically trained musicians to improvise by writing cadenza-like improvisations into his pieces, making it so anyone at any level can improvise in performance. This approach lends to the most unique aspect of I See Stars in Your Eyes: the simple, easily performed improvisation section in the middle of the piece. Rather than imposing chord changes or fixed rhythm, this section has a written ostinato in the bass voice that is coupled with the freedom to improvise in the upper voice - allowing the performer to showcase their own musical voice.
