Key: C major.Three Chorales (In Diminishing Length)--or Three Chorales for short--is the result of a composing experiment combining a scribbled condensed score in concert C and D major with Noteflight. Typically, I'll write evolving chord progressions and only play them later, seeing what will result from a purely theoretical set of movements. This time, I spot-checked the handwritten score as I went, making adjustments to it and the digital score. The results are still delightfully weird and borderline atonal, but Three Chorales came out well overall (although I'd tweak some of the dynamics for the screeching clarinet part if I ever revisit it). The first chorale is six measures in the original manuscript (seven here to allow the bass clarinet to move to the tonic for a more satisfying chord); the second chorale is five measures; and the third chorale is four measures. Reducing the length of measures added an additional fun challenge in trying to make a musical point in a very short space. I don't know if I succeeded, but I had fun trying!

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.1079077). Robert Timmers has beautifully arranged Johann Sebastian Bach's Complete Chorale Harmonizations for Trombone Quartet, Volume 2 (Chorales 146-282). This momentous collection of 434 Chorales in three volumes (volume 1 is published and soon volume 3 as well) taken from Bach's 200-plus cantatas and other choral works is a gift to the Trombone world and a major addition to the repertoire of Trombone Ensembles. This collection is the first of its kind for the instrument. The music is laid out in score format of two systems (tenor and bass) and two coil-bound books of 72 pages are provided for the performers. Appropriate for moderately advanced performers, these chorales are great for working on tonal blend, intonation, style, and phrasing. The digital sound sample below of Chorales 1-5 from Volume 1 will give you a good idea of the beauty of these arrangements for Trombone Quartet. This collection has been dedicated to the late Steve Witser by arranger and former student, Robert Timmers.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811182). Bach's chorales are four-part Lutheran hymns that were part of mostly larger works such as cantatas, motets, Passions and oratorios. There are 420 of them in total based on the latest publication by Luke Dahn from LuxSitPress in 2017! Justin Chiang has miraculously arranged 20 of these Chorales for traditional brass trio (Trumpet in B-flat, Horn and Trombone) in Volume I. They sound great and can be used for a variety of purposes including warming up the group at the beginning of a rehearsal, a recital, funeral, religious service, etc. Each chorale is identified with a BWV number, title in German and English translation. You cannot be without these gorgeous pieces. Volume I and II are sold as a set as well.

Gordon Cherry #5008509. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792548). Chorale Fanfare opens with a stirring fanfare section. This is followed by the the composer's original chorale melody which is true in style to the traditional chorales of J.S. Bach and so many others of the reformation era. The chorale is presented in the organ, at first just the unadorned melody with each phrase adding more harmonic lines. Then it is richly voiced in four parts for the brass players. The fanfare motifs return and build to a glorious conclusion. The 3-minute work is appropriate for moderately advanced performers and would sound wonderful in a large hall or church.

The word Boustrophédon is a 16th century expression which refers to an archaic type of writing in which, after having written a line from left to right, one continues the next line from right to left and then alternates directions. This is the way the oldest known latin inscriptions are written, as well as in the traditional writing of the Touaregs The etymology comes from the Greek “bous†or ox and the verbal form “trophéin†or the verb “to turnâ€. These two elements give the image that this writing is traced in the same way that the ox pulled the plow in the fields In the sub-title, there is an evocation of Rimbaud‘s famous “Vowel“ sonnet : : Oh, sublime trumpet full of strange piercing sounds The author wanted to suggest both musically and technically the manner of this style of writing in boustrophedon. The work begins thus with a sonorous strange sonorous background which suggests this type of writing. This strange atmosphere is created by glissandi on the piano strings as well as on the strings of the violin and the violoncello. These alternating movements create “strange piercing sounds†against which the flute and clarinet alternately play brief sequences which create the outline of a melody. Then the atmosphere changes : the violin, the cello and the piano come together in a percussive violent outburst, which creates a tragic, passionate feeling which may also be considered “strange piercing soundsâ€. Several long aleatoric phrases are then presented like a sonorous halo which intensify to bring the lister to an intense Chorale-like phrase which serves as the central pillar of the work. This phrase is repeated several times, each time gaining in intensity to bring the work to its summit. Pachelbel's grand Chorale Partita with Seven Variations in G is based on the 17th Century Protestant German hymn tune Alle Menschen müssen sterben (All of Mankind is Mortal) by Jakob Hintze. The original form of the work was in C major with eight variations, composed for Organ. Bach, being greatly influenced by Pachelbel, later took up the melody for use in one of his Cantatas. Keith Terrett has done a great job arranging these elaborate variations of about 6 minutes in length for a Trombone quintet of advanced performers.

The Chorale is actually a quote from the Dies Irae, which Mahler called the march of the dead. Also added in is the Resurrection theme which is almost a fanfare. This excerpt from the Symphony features the low brass which makes this arrangement by Randall Malmstrom so meaningful. For advanced performers, this work will add another dimension to your concert.

Fantasy on How Great Our Joy received its premiere at the London Winter Festival of Sound 2022 in London, England at the Croydon SDA Church by composer and organist, Professor Janise White. This organ work represents an exhilarating work of joy and adoration to our Saviour, Lord and King. As a clarion call for Christmas, soft flutes carry the melody over a dreamy pentatonic configuration with a drone in the pedals. Staccato trumpets exhibit the joy chordal motif, repeating and swelling to a joyous cadenza on the pedals in toccata style. This jubilant moment continues to intensify as syncopated harmonies join the final verse in elongation on 32' pedals to its majestic close.Toccata on In Dulci Jubilo is designed as a short Organ Postlude performed during the Advent/Christmas Season. The work opens with a medley of Carols including Joy To The World, Angels We Have Heard On High, and Silent Night, before leading to the exuberant In Dulci Jubilo (Good Christian Men Rejoice)! White's arrangement of In Dulci Jubilo, a 1328 German Chorale theme is combined with the magnificent accompaniment of Charles-Marie Widor's famous Toccata from Symphony No. 5 (1879). It appears in 6/8 meter as opposed to the original 4/2 meter. Tritonic interludes intercept the flow of the German Carol alternately, propelling the music to its rousing end
