The set of six Divertimenti were first published c. 1775 by B. Hummel et fils. They were obviously very popular - as was most of Schwindl’s music during his life - and widely copied by other musicians. This led to this Divertimento and No. 5 in G major later being widely attributed to C. P. E. Bach and catalogued as H.641 and H. 642 respectively.Schwindl was a virtuoso violinist, flute player and keyboard player and wrote well for these instruments. The Divertimenti were written for flute or violin, violin 2, viola and cello continuo, though by the 1770s the keyboard was becoming surplus to requirements as the string quartet and the flute quartet became recognised as stand alone ensembles.Each Divertimento has three movements, here they are Largo, Allegro and Rondeau - tempo di men(uetto). Players of intermediate standard and above will enjoy this piece.This edition has been prepared from the c. 1775 Hummel edition. Editings are clearly shown using parentheses ( ) or dashed lines. Eighteenth century players would have added additional ornaments and dynamics during their performances and contemporary players should feel free to do the same.

For trombonists, mentioning the great Russian composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky usually conjures up thoughts of great orchestral works and grandiose symphonic playing. Here though, iTromboni’s Andrew Poirier has crafted a beautiful trombone quintet arrangement of two movements from one of Tchaikovsky’s more intimate chamber works, his: String Quartet No. 1 in D major, Op. 11. 1. Andante Cantabile 2. Scherzo The original second movement, Andante Cantabile, is one of the most famous pieces Tchaikovsky ever wrote and its marvelous melodic lines are delicately passed between each trombone voice. This is followed by the third movement which is an upbeat Scherzo, full of energy, rhythmic drive and syncopation. Each movement can be performed on its own or together as this beautiful 10-minute suite. This arrangement has been created to showcase each member of the quintet with both beautiful lyrical solos and demanding technical passages.

This arrangement of the Allegro movement from Henry Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services. It is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. This selection is one of the arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library, many of which are being made available for the first time. They have performed the Trumpet Quintet version of this composition quite often for numerous weddings and other special occasions. The original composition was written in D Major but Regis Bookshar has transposed it to Bb Major, making it a little easier for many modern musicians. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (8 pages). The 17th century composer, Henry Purcell, is generally considered to be one of the greatest English composers of his generation. His Sonata for Trumpet and Strings in D Major, composed in 1694, was probably written for the London Theatre, where a fine tradition of trumpet playing had developed. Purcell almost certainly had in mind either John Shore or his brother, William, the most renowned trumpet players in England at the time. The trumpets of the time were normally tuned in D and there were no valves on the Baroque trumpets, so they were limited in the number of notes that they could play. The term Sonata here probably means no more than a piece of incidental music and looks forward to the style that would become the solo concerto where soloist and strings are pitted against each other but also looks back to an older type of instrumental music which emphasized equality between members of the ensemble. The music is in three movements and looks forward to the fast-slow-fast plan popularized by Vivaldi's concertos. Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists, besides trumpet players, could also have the opportunity to play the Allegro movement from Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet, so he has created other arrangements of this selection. However, this particular arrangement is for a Trumpet Solo with a String Quartet, consisting of 2 Violins, 1 Viola and 1 Violoncello, but there are Quintets, Sextets, Septets and Octets readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Published by Cypress Publishing (A0.1447120). Soon after moving to Vienna in 1781, Mozart wrote what turned out to be his last, and finest, three serenades for wind ensemble. He himself arranged the one in c minor, Köchel 388, for string quintet (2 violins, 2 violas and cello), and that version is known as K. 406. Most of the serenade in B-Flat Major, K 361, sometimes called Gran Partita or Serenade for 13 Instruments, was also arranged for the same quintet combination, apparently by someone else, with the movements divided up between Quintets No. 6 and 7 in the second volume of the standard Peters Edition set of parts for Mozart’s string quintets. The remaining serenade, K. 375, is appearing in a string quintet arrangement for the first time that I know of. While it does not have the dramatic intensity of K. 388/406 or the grand sweep of K. 361, it is a worthy companion to the other two works. He composed it “carefully”, as he explained in a letter to his father, and the piece is full of striking details that show this. In the first movement, the second subject is surprisingly in a dark minor key, and the development is based on it. But it does not appear in the recapitulation, replaced instead by a new major key theme. The first of the two minuets also has a brooding trio in minor. The heart of the work is the Adagio, one of Mozart’s great slow movements, and it should be better known. The long-spun overlapping melodies work particularly well for strings. The finale starts as a conventional Rondo, but breaks off into an extended fugal section (again starting in a minor key!) that gives the movement weight and power beyond a typical formula rondo. This arrangement transposes the original E-Flat Major to D Major, to take advantage of string sonority while making some of the passage work lie better for the instruments. Score and parts follow the current convention of listing the composer’s middle name as Amadeus, even though he did not favor it: His only recorded use was a letter he signed Wolfgangus Amadeus Mozartus, clearly intended as a joke. He preferred the Italian or French versions, Amadeo or Amadé, of his German given name Gottlieb (which he also rarely if ever used). Oscillation began as an experiment in coordination of a melody and harmony which are based on different means of organization. To this end, the clarinet is treated separately from the string quartet. The clarinet melody is constructed by means of limited interval usage. In mm.1–3 it can be observed that the melodic intervals are strictly limited to the use of a major 2nd/minor 7th or a major 6th/minor 3rd. By contrast, the string quartet has no limitation on its intervallic usage but always strives towards triadic harmonies in its accompanimental capacity and tends to converge on harmonies diatonic to the key. In addition, despite the proliferation of non-chord tones and transitionary passages in the string quartets’ music, the stable harmonies are written to have fairly parsimonious motion between them (if one were to reduce out the NCTs etc.) The coordination of these two separate logics is done by the selection of anchor-pitches for the melodic phrases. For example, the melodic phrase in mm.4–7 oscillates around the pitch of G natural (transposed in the score), which it shares with the F major/minor 7th chord that is heard as the harmonic goal of the strings in m.7. The teleology of the work can largely be traced in its melodic construction. Its opening phrase of mm.1–3 is anchored on G natural and ends on a C sharp, a tritone above the anchor, to simulate a half-cadence effect. The second phrase of mm.4–7 is still written on G natural but it ends on G as well, forming the authentic cadence and establishing a basic period as well as the work’s first theme. This is followed by second period which represents a dominant relationship to the first. The phrase at mm.10–13.2 is a rather extended utterance in comparison to the first two and is anchored on D natural. This is followed by 4-stage call and response across the ensemble (excluding the second violin) that leads the first section to a close at m.16 on a C diminished triad. Melodically, the first section is characterised by its limited used of a major 2nd/minor 7th or a major 6th/minor 3rd interval. At m.17, the second section follows much the same process as the first, using anchor pitches as a means of coordination and formal definition, and alternating soloistic clarinet playing with activated harmonies in the strings. The primary difference is in the character of the second section’s theme with regards to its rhythmic profile as well as its intervallic content. Namely, these are limited to the use of a minor 3rd or minor 2nd and their inversions. The second section draws to a close at m.32, returning to the tonic harmony of the key. With the first and second sections complete, the work now proceeds into a developmental section. Mm.33–84 largely consists of development of the two themes by manipulation of intervallic content as well as adjusting the placement of the thematic material withing the accompanimental context. This does include juxtaposition of the two themes (though one typicall becomes integrated into to accompaniment) as can be seen between the violin and viola at m.39. Variety is heightened by the introduction of episodic material such as the secondary melody performed by the clarinet at mm.40–41. The Lento section starting at m.53 introduces further rhythmic and metric adjustment of the thematic content. A varied recapitulation occurs at mm.85–113 and is followed by a coda at mm.114–131.
